In Experiment I, contingency management was employed with five non-institutionalized trainable retardates (mean MA=4.l, CA=9.9, and language age=2.6) in a classroom situation. Empirically determined high probability behaviors were displayed as colored cartoon figures in a reinforcement menu. Tasks from the Peabody Language Development Kit defined the behavior strengthened during 15 one-hour sessions. A quantity of low probability task behavior had to occur in order for subjects to emit 4 minutes of high probability reinforcing activity. This study utilized the theories of David C. McClelland and associates regarding affective arousal, concept of cues arousing motives, and neutral testing procedures. The problem was to study the influence of color and/ or movement, as cues added to the McClelland four-picture Thematic Apperception Test, to evoke need achievement responses to determine whether or not the added stimuli of color and/or movement might evoke increased need achievement responses.

An in-depth personality and intellectual evaluation of a group of hermaphroditic children residing in the state of Oklahoma was undertaken in this study. The following techniques were utilized in order to extensively study the impact of this anomaly on the families of these children: psychological tests, parental interviews by a social worker, and diagnostic play interviews conducted by the investigator. It was the purpose of this study to examine the psychological impact of sexual ambiguity on the child and his parents.

The study was conducted to investigate the effects of an introduction to psychology course on college students' superstitions and beliefs which have some scientific sanction. The test used was selected from H. K. Nixon's 1925 study on answers to psychological questions and considers 30 statements to be marked true or false.

Subjects used for this study were 100 men and 100 women students in a beginning psychology course at Utah State University, Logan, Utah. The grade-point average (GPA) of 4 groups of college sophomores, representing high and low scores on the CPI Ac and Ai scales, was analyzed to test the hypothesis that conforming and independent achievement motivation (as measured by the CPI) is related to scholastic achievement reflective of conforming or independent behavior. Specific hypotheses regarding differential achievement as a function of Ac and Ai scores were tested and, in general, supported. The increased demand for more school counselors since World War II raised many questions concerning their preparation and training. One of the most controversial topics has been that of requiring teaching experience as a prerequisite for counselor certification. We find ourselves in a milieu of controversy in which some advocates are proposing that teaching experience can handicap the counselor in his effectiveness while others are saying that teaching experience is a vital prerequisite for counselor effectiveness.

Imitation Of Tolerance For Delay In Children: The Effects Of Model-Subject Similarity., Susan Mendenhall

The experiment was conducted to evaluate effects of high and low delay tolerant models on children's delay behavior, and to assess effects of subject-model delay similarity on imitation of a second task. High, low, and middle delay subjects heard a model give either high or low delay responses to the Mischel questionnaire. Subjects were also shown the model's success expectancy on a ring toss game. Analysis of post-test delay change showed that high and low delay models produced significantly differential modeling, which was in part a function of the initial delay tolerance of the subjects. An Analytical Investigation Of Instructions Designed To Elicit Test Anxiety, Karl Kilby Long

Three components of motivating instructions typically used to elicit performance decrements in high test-anxious Ss were investigated to determine whether: (a) the mention of a test, (b) identifying the test as an intelligence test, or (c) suggesting evaluation in relation to a peer-group is primarily responsible for the observed decrement. High and low test-anxious Ss were given 12 paired-associate lists of English word pairs, with the experimental instructions given between the 8th and 9th lists. Analyses of post-instruction changes in learning behavior revealed significant differences only between the instruction condition containing the full set of components and the controls. These …

A review of developmental psychology reflects vigorous research concerning the relationships between parental behavior and attitudes and child personality and behavior.The research findings are generally consistent in demonstrating that the child's familial experiences are prime determinates of his personality. Within this context, there is mounting evidence of the pervasive and dramatic effects of early experience on later development. Ojibway Indians of the north-central United States have had great difficulty in organizing effectively to work toward common economic, social, and political ends. This has been the case historically and remains true today. The basic reason for the inability to organize is on orientation to life which Foster has described in his theory of the Image of Limited Good, and which was observed on a Minnesota reservation.

This thesis, presented at Xavier University in 1969, examines Graham Greene's novel "Brighton Rock" as a significant early step in Greene's development of psychologically complex characterization. Madigan argues that the novel represents the first sustained combination of three elements in Greene's fiction: the "thriller" plot structure, the "Catholic element" as a framework of belief opposing his characters' actions, and genuine psychological depth, distinguishing it from both his earlier thrillers and his lighter "entertainments."

The purpose of this experiment was to determine if simple auditory and visual sensory stimuli were effective reinforcers with mentally retarded children and, if so whether one stimulus was superior to the other. In order to make this determination, a group of eighteen female patients between the ages of seventeen and twenty-seven, having IQ's ranging between 37 and 98, and classified as functioning in adaptive behavior level-III, were assigned by random sampling techniques to three equal groups to participate in a multiple-choice learning situation. The effect of positive verbal reinforcement on the verbal self-references of hospitalized psychiatric patients was studied. Eighteen patients, characterized by a high production rate of negative, verbal self-references, were matched on the following variables: age, length of hospitalization, medication, psychotherapy participation, intelligence quotient, sex, and adjustment score discrepancy obtained on a Q-sort test. After the subjects were given the pre-experimental Q-sorts and matched on the other variables, nine were randomly assigned to the experimental group and nine to the control group. Researchers and scholars in the fear appeal area have been unable to determine what factor or factors make fear appeals effective. Two studies, Hewgill and Miller (1965) and Powell (1965), suggest that the personal involvement of the audience with who or what is threatened is the factor which causes fear appeals to be effective. If ego-involvement is the personal involvement factor indicated by these studies, then it would appear to be the key to fear appeal effectiveness. Therefore, the present investigation was designed to experimentally compare the effects of ego-involvement and fear appeals upon task performance.
