Pharmacological Effects On Aggression And Manual Responding Generated By Tail Shock In The Squirrel Monkey, Grace S. Emley

The response-independent, fixed-time delivery of electric tail shock in the squirrel monkey generated bites on a rubber hose immediately following shock delivery and manual responses on a lever immediately preceding shock. The procedure generated two temporally and topographically different responses in the single organism in a single experimental session. All responses were measured objectively via response manipulanda and recorded on cumulative recorders and counters. Nine pharmacological compounds were administered to the squirrel monkey after a stable baseline of bite and lever press responding had been established. Research has indicated a complex relationship between alcohol and aggression involving personality as well as situational variables. Recently it has been found that expectancy of receiving alcohol has a more potent effect (on many behavioral measures including aggression) than does actual receipt of alcohol. In addition, alcohol has been found to increase power fantasies in males, leading many researchers to associate power fantasies with powerful actions such as aggression. Researchers and theoreticians have long assumed differences to exist in the attentional and learning processes between hysterical and obsessive-compulsive style individuals. This assumption of differences between the two cognitive styles has engendered limited research. Further, this research has utilized only the type of tasks employed in learning and memory experiments. The present study attempted to assess differences in the memories of hysterical and obsessive style individuals, moving from memory for word lists as assessed in previous research, to memory for information more typically utilized in a clinical situation.

The study proposes that experiences caused by direct drug action and the unusual pressures of obtaining the illegal drug heroin greatly affect heroin addict MMPI responding. These drug-related experiences confound MMPI profile data by introducing a variable not related to personality dynamics or personality traits. An associated confounding variable is the amount of time between cessation of heroin use and the administration of the MMPI. The longer this time period the less the effect of drug-related experiences upon MMPI responding, as the heroin addicts forget some of their drug-related experiences and respond as appropriate to their present life experiences. Previous research concerning sex-role stereotyping, psychological androgyny, and mental health as it relates both to sex-role stereotyping and androgyny was reviewed. The literature indicated the need for a reevaluation of mental health standards with regard to sex-role stereotypes. The present study attempted to approach this need by examining the relationship between psychological androgyny and attitudes toward sex-role stereotyping. It was hypothesized that androgynous individuals would be more likely than other individuals to state that a hypothetical person possessing a specific set of traits could be either male or female. The present study examined the relationship between invasions of personal space and measures of glancing, blocking, leaning, head-shoulder orientation, movement away from the invader, and flight latency. These behaviors have been described in previous studies as occurring in response to spatial invasions, and the equilibrium model proposed to account for their occurrence. Hypotheses consistent with this model were tested in a 2 x 2 x 3 design which varied sex of invader, sex of subject and distance of subject from invader (1 foot, 2 feet, or 5 feet). The correlate relationships and directionality and magnitude of mean differences between MAs and IQs of the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and Revised Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale (both 1960 and 1972 norms) were investigated in a sample of 225 school age children. It was found that MAs of two instruments were more highly correlated than the IQs. For the total sample, no significant differences were found between mean MAs of the two instruments. The correlation between PPVT and the 1960 Revised Stanford-Binet IQs and the correlation between PPVT and 1972 Revised Stanford-Binet IQs were found to be identical. The PPVT was found …

This field study examined the effects of the leadership dimensions of "consideration" and "initiating structure" on turnover behavior. The subjects were male and female blue collar workers under the direction of female supervisors. The Supervisory Behavior Description Questionnaire measures of "consideration" and "initiating structure" were not found to be related to turnover for this group of employees. Implications for future research concerning turnover with blue collar workers is discussed.

Factor score profiles based on scores in the standardization sample for the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Revised were visually surveyed for patterns of the demographic characteristics sex, race, parent’s occupation and religion and area of residence, these characteristics having been listed with the intelligence quotients obtained in the standardization sample. Patterns of the demographic characteristics and frequencies were described over the range of profiles, then the various profiles were described individually in terms of percentage of frequency and predominant demographic characteristics. The present study attempted to examine the relationship between reading level and central and incidental learning in the visual and auditory modalities. The central-incidental tasks were modifications of Hagen's (1967) visual central-incidental tasks. Twenty male and female adolescents who had identified learning problems were subjects. An equal number of good and poor readers were assigned to the visual and auditory tasks. The results of the research indicated that reading level was not related to incidental learning nor to central auditory performance. The following research examined the differences in two modes of presentation within the employee interview situation; the letter of reference and the job interview. Past research has failed to examine these two modes presented in succession to the same subjects to ascertain the more salient mode. In the present research this was detennined by pairing a letter of reference with an incongruent job interview to see which mode has the greater influence on the decision to hire. One hundred male and female undergraduate students served as mock jurors. Subjects read four automobile accident summaries. For each case, subjects judged the defendant's responsibility, the plaintiff 's responsebility, and evaluated the severity of consequences. In each case, the deservingness of the victim to suffer, and the severity of the accidental consequences were varied. In addition, a median split was done on subjects' locus of control scores to define a third treatment variable. Therefore, the study was a 2 (Internal vs. External) x 2 (High Severity vs. Low Severity) x 2 (High Deservingness vs. Low Deservingness) mixed factorial design. Results …

Attribution theory is concerned with the process by which people infer causation from "parts of the relatively stable environment" (Heider, 1958:297). This process is a function of the need to. control the environment through explanation and prediction similar to the way scientists attempt descriptions that render predictions. This research was concerned with the relative effectiveness of professional and paraprofessional therapists in group management of college students exhibiting test anxiety. It was predicted that both the professional and paraprofessional therapists' groups would exhibit significant pre-post decreases in debilitating test anxiety. It was also predicted that there would be no significant pre-post differences between the professional and paraprofessional therapists' groups. Subjects were 26 participants in five Illinois State University Student Counseling Center Test Anxiety Workshops. Subjects completed a modified State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Achievement Anxiety Test at the beginning and end of the test anxiety workshops.
