The Type A Coronary-Prone Personality : A Coping Mechanism For Situational Control, Elizabeth Bennett Jan 1981

The Type A Coronary-Prone Personality : A Coping Mechanism For Situational Control, Elizabeth Bennett

Honors Theses

What is the factor that relates coronary heart disease and other cardiovascular problems to societal advancement and increased occupational demands? This paper will examine this question by first reviewing the studies done by Meyer Friedman and R.H. Rosenman which have provided evidence to suggest that there is a link between stressful situations and coronary heart disease, and which led to the development of the personality type A which is coronary prone. The physiological effects that stress may produce and the ways in which this may lead to coronary heart disease will be discussed. Also examined will be the proposal by …

Effects Of Rational-Emotive Group Therapy Upon Anxiety And Self-Esteem Of Learning Disabled Children, Donna J. Meyer Jan 1981

Effects Of Rational-Emotive Group Therapy Upon Anxiety And Self-Esteem Of Learning Disabled Children, Donna J. Meyer

Dissertations

Previous research has indicated the effectiveness of rational-emotive education techniques in reducing anxiety and building self-esteem with regular classroom children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of rational-emotive group therapy on anxiety and self-esteem of learning-disabled children. One hundred ten learning-disabled children (ages 8-13) were assigned to one of three experimental conditions: rational-emotive therapy (N=32), recreational-educational programming (N=31), or no-contact (N=47). Within the two experimental treatments that actually met, groups of seven to nine members, similar in chronological age, were formed. The rational-emotive groups received therapy based on rational-emotive theory. The recreational-educational programming groups engaged in …

A Study Of Self-Concept Of Hearing-Impaired Students As Compared To The Self-Concept Of Normal-Hearing Students, Wayne K. Wright Jan 1981

A Study Of Self-Concept Of Hearing-Impaired Students As Compared To The Self-Concept Of Normal-Hearing Students, Wayne K. Wright

Dissertations

Problem

One of the important problems for the handicapped child is whether he can develop an adequate self-concept. This is a significant problem for the hearing-impaired child in a regular school setting. If the development of self-concept is contingent upon the ability to express needs, wants, and desires, what is the self-concept of a child who cannot describe his feelings? The present study attempts to measure the self-concepts of the hearing-impaired students and to compare them to the self-concepts of the hearing students.

Method

The Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale was used to evaluate the self-concepts of 926 students of the …

Mental Health Status Of Vietnamese Refugees In Utah County, Utah, David A. Acree Jan 1981

Mental Health Status Of Vietnamese Refugees In Utah County, Utah, David A. Acree

Theses and Dissertations

This study attempted to measure mental health status of Vietnamese refugees in Utah County, Utah. The test instrument used was the Cornell Medical Index (CMI). Two subproblems were considered: First, to see if refugee complaints on the CMI were predominantly physiological or psychological. Second, to see if there was a relationship between CMI scores and a related list of demographic variables.

Results showed the mean CMI score for the sample under study was well above the suggested score indicative of possible psychological dysfunction. For 80% of participants, psychological complaints were predominant over physical complaints. The only variables showing a relationship …

Case Effects In Letter-Name Matching: A Qualitative Visual Field Difference, Joseph B. Hellige Jan 1981

Case Effects In Letter-Name Matching: A Qualitative Visual Field Difference, Joseph B. Hellige

Psychological Science Faculty Works

Subjects indicated whether or not two letters presented simultaneously to the left or right visual field had the same name. On same-name trials, reaction time was faster when both letters had the same case (physically identical, or PI, pairs) than when they were of different case (name identical, or NI, pairs) and reaction time was faster for left visual field presentations than for right visual field presentations. For left visual field presentations, the letter-case effect was as large on different-name trials as on same-name trials, indicating that the NI-PI difference was not simply a physical identity effect. In contrast, for …

Success Expectancy In Depressives, Marilyn Frances Barnowe-Meyer Jan 1981

Success Expectancy In Depressives, Marilyn Frances Barnowe-Meyer

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis was an attempt to investigate two important cognitive aspects of depression: expectation of success, and changes in this expectation. Recent studies in these areas have yielded inconsistent results. It has generally been concluded that subclinical depressives do not differ from nondepressives in initial expectation of success, though they do at times exhibit smaller changes in success expectancy following personal experiences of success or failure. Two main cognitive theories of depression have attempted to account for this difference between the two populations. Beck (1967) has proposed that depression results from specific negative cognitive processes, among them a denial of …

Behavioral Self-Management In Organizational Settings, Richard E. Griggs Jan 1981

Behavioral Self-Management In Organizational Settings, Richard E. Griggs

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The intent of this study was to examine the effectiveness of behavioral self-management for mid-level managers in a variety of organizational settings. Behavioral self-management combines some of the current techniques found in behavioral psychology and management research. The present approach uses behavioral self-control and certain aspects of time management in a four-term contingency analysis (SOBC) to systematically control work-related problems that result in less than optimal performance. Eight individuals who occupied middle-management positions participated in the study. The behavioral self-management approach was used to successfully manage a total of about 20 out of 23 target behaviors associated with on-the-job performance. …

Sexual Harassment Of Working Women: An Exploratory Study, Cheryl Mcmichaels

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to empirically investigate the subject of sexual harassment. A total of 82 women were recruited from central Illinois to fill out a questionnaire on sexual harassment and the Assertiveness Inventory (Gambrill and Richey, 1975). An attempt was made to control the subjects for occupational levels. Their occupational levels ranged from physician to unskilled worker, and their educational levels ranged from a high school degree to an advanced degree. The women in this sample worked full-time, part-time, and did volunteer work.

All of the women filled out the Assertiveness Inventory, a 40-item self-report, (Gambrill and …

Comparison Of Scores Obtained On The Ppvt And The Ppvt-R, Jennie L.M. Choong Jan 1981

Comparison Of Scores Obtained On The Ppvt And The Ppvt-R, Jennie L.M. Choong

Dissertations and Theses

The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) is a widely used receptive vocabulary screening tool, but it is not without its limitations, such as inadvisable I.Q. usage and a standardization procedure that lacks scope. A revision of the PPVT, known as the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R) was published in 1981, and contains a more complete standardization procedure as well as some structural changes of the test itself (Dunn, 1981). Speech/language pathology, whose diagnosticians most commonly use the age equivalent value, is a profession that would gain from information which deals with the equivalency of the PPVT-R to the original PPVT. …
