Physical Self Efficacy, Injury, History And Locus Of Control As Predictors Of Athletes' Expected Recovery Actions In Response To Various Levels Of Injury Severity, Kristen R. Goldbach Jan 1989

Physical Self Efficacy, Injury, History And Locus Of Control As Predictors Of Athletes' Expected Recovery Actions In Response To Various Levels Of Injury Severity, Kristen R. Goldbach

Master's Theses

Athletes and coaches from a university athletic program at the highest level of competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association and a college athletic program at the lowest level of competition participated in this project designed to study athletes expected recovery actions when presented with various levels of injury. Physical self-efficacy, locus of control and injury history were considered as mediators in the expected recovery processes including expected recovery time, the number of recovery strategies, and reaction to permission for competition after injury. The Physical Self-Efficacy Scale (Ryckman, Robbins, Thorton, & Cantrell, 1982) and the Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale …

Semantic And Self-Referent Encoding Techniques And Recall Of Meanings Of Unfamiliar Adjectives, Maria K. Whittington Jan 1989

Semantic And Self-Referent Encoding Techniques And Recall Of Meanings Of Unfamiliar Adjectives, Maria K. Whittington

Master's Theses

In order to test the efficacy of levels of processing on memory, recall of unfamiliar adjectives among five encoding groups: a) semantic, b) self-reference specific, c) self-reference general, d) semantic (plural), and e) self-reference specific (plural) was examined. Introductory psychology students at the University of Richmond viewed twenty unfamiliar adjectives and definitions for forty-five seconds each, followed by a five minute distractor task and a seven minute test for recall of the definitions. A second seven minute recall test was administered one week later. There were no significant differences in recall between groups, but a significant effect of time upon …

Serial, Parallel And Delay Strategies In The Processing Of Structurally Ambiguous Language Constructions, Harvey Slutsky Jan 1989

Serial, Parallel And Delay Strategies In The Processing Of Structurally Ambiguous Language Constructions, Harvey Slutsky

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Through a set of two experiments, the present study attempted to determine which of three language processing strategies, that is, serial, parallel or delay is employed in parsing two kinds of structurally ambiguous visually presented sentences (transitive and verb complement). The study used a relatively new technique, a self paced syntactic decision task whose sensitivity to local parsing complexity was demonstrated in the first experiment through a partial replication of Ford's (1983) work with relative clause sentences. The findings showed Object relatives to be harder to process at the position of the main verb. The same findings from a followup …

Lucky Numbers: Choice Strategies In The Pennsylvania Daily Number Game, Andrea R. Halpern, Scott D. Devereaux Jan 1989

Lucky Numbers: Choice Strategies In The Pennsylvania Daily Number Game, Andrea R. Halpern, Scott D. Devereaux

Faculty Journal Articles

Examined the amount of money bet during a week of Pennsylvania's Daily Number game. In this game, players receive a predetermined payoff for picking the 3-digit number (000 to 999) drawn on that day. The betting distribution was distinctly nonuniform. Several betting patterns were identified, such as picking triples and avoiding double 9s. In addition, 121 adults and 215 students were asked to rate selected numbers for randomness, luckiness, and perceived history of winning; to categorize numbers; and to free associate to numbers. It is proposed that people seem to choose highly patterned, available, and/or "lucky" numbers. People apparently do …

Positive Distinctiveness And Intergroup Discrimination Between Intercollegiate Athletes And Nonathletes, Jean H. Pace Jan 1989

Positive Distinctiveness And Intergroup Discrimination Between Intercollegiate Athletes And Nonathletes, Jean H. Pace

Honors Theses

Past research has shown that individuals seek to establish a positively valued distinctiveness between their own group (ingroup) and other groups (outgroups) to maintain and enhance their self-esteem (Turner, 1981). The purpose of this study was to explore this issue further using intercollegiate student athletes and nonathletes as subjects. Ten athletes and ten nonathletes each generated lists of personality traits that they believed athletes and nonathletes possess. A different group of athletes and nonathletes (N=68) then rated the social desirability of these traits. The results revealed that each group attempted to differentiate itself positively from the other. Athletes and nonathletes …

Modern Black Psychological Theories Versus European Methodology And How They Relate To Corporate Savvy, Lynda Williams Smith Jan 1989

Modern Black Psychological Theories Versus European Methodology And How They Relate To Corporate Savvy, Lynda Williams Smith

Theses

There has been extensive research done on Black Theoretical Constructs versus European Constructs. It is the intent of this project to provide its readers with an insight into the problems that exist with racist and oppressive theories and their applications and methodologies (past and present); I will also explore the "Afrocentric Model" (a black frame of reference), and how that model of Black personality theories can be developed to "deal with" White corporate situations.

Racism and oppression are two critical problems of our time for which some have theories, but no one has an answer. Every man, in a sense, …

The program is time-limited and task-oriented, and it is intended to be used with a closed group of eight to ten women and conducted by two female therapists. The program combines the techniques of expressive therapy and psychodynamic group therapy. It consists of twelve sessions that are an hour-and-a-half to two hours long. Each session is devoted to a specific issue of concern to adult female survivors of childhood incest. Each issue is explored through the making of art projects, the use of guided imagery, …

The Relationship Of Corporate Fitness To Absenteeism And Health Care Cost, Shawn J. Mcgahey Jan 1989

The Relationship Of Corporate Fitness To Absenteeism And Health Care Cost, Shawn J. Mcgahey

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Interest in corporate fitness is increasing. In this study, absenteeism rates and health care costs were measured for 12 months before and 12 months after implementation of a corporate fitness class. It was hypothesized that those who participate in the fitness program would have lower absenteeism rates and health care costs. It was also hypothesized that lifestyle factors would be significantly related to the decision to participate in the fitness program and to absenteeism.

Results showed no significant relationship between program participation and absenteeism. Also, it was found that average health care costs were lower before the program intervention and …

Explicit Memory For Unattended Information, Ronald Thomas Kellogg, Ruth S. Dare Jan 1989

Explicit Memory For Unattended Information, Ronald Thomas Kellogg, Ruth S. Dare

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Explicit recognition memory of unattended information was tested in two studies. College students performed complex mental addition problems in the presence of distracting words, with instructions to concentrate on rapidly and accurately verifying the accompanying arithmetic answers. Then, they took a surprise recognition test on the words. Experiment 1 showed that a short exposure (800 msec) resulted in chance levels of recognition performance, whereas a longer exposure (1,100 msec) supported recognition barely better than chance. Experiment 2 addressed whether attended and unattended encoding are qualitatively different mental states or instead the same state, differing only in the degree of attention …

Toward Predicting Completion Of Substance Abuse Treatment, Rebecca Lee Bragg Jan 1989

Toward Predicting Completion Of Substance Abuse Treatment, Rebecca Lee Bragg

Dissertations and Theses

This investigation attempts to identify factors which influence whether or not someone is likely to drop out of a chemical dependency treatment program. Dropping out is defined as someone who leaves treatment against medical advice.

The subjects were patients from a private, non-profit, medically based, residential program. Nine demographic characteristics were abstracted from the charts on file for the patients at the treatment center. Two groups of 45 patients each were selected from the inpatient population. One group, the Completed Treatment group, comprised patients who had completed the 28 day program. The second group, the AMA Discharge group, comprised patients …

Normative Data On The Auditory Memory Test Battery For Ages 9 Through 13 Years, Elisabeth Y. Carter Jan 1989

Normative Data On The Auditory Memory Test Battery For Ages 9 Through 13 Years, Elisabeth Y. Carter

Dissertations and Theses

Auditory short-term memory (STM) is important for speech and language development and for learning new information presented auditorily. Research has shown that auditory STM ability is of a developmental nature in the 5 through 8 year age range for a variety of auditory stimuli. Many tests and subtests are available to measure auditory STM ability, however one test, the Auditory Memory Test Battery (AMTB) measures auditory memory span and memory for sequence for 5 types of stimuli.

The purpose of this study was to collect normative data on the AMTB scores of normal 9 through 13 year old students and …

Sex Role Traits And Psychological Merger In Lesbian Relationships, Susan G. Dahlstrom Jan 1989

Sex Role Traits And Psychological Merger In Lesbian Relationships, Susan G. Dahlstrom

Dissertations and Theses

Much of the literature on lesbian relationships links the positive feminine relational trait (intimacy or communion) with problems of psychological merger (Burch, 1982, 1985; Decker, 1984; Elise, 1986; Krestan and Bepko, 1980). Karpel (1976), describes psychological merger as a person's "state of ernbeddedness in and undifferentiation within, the relational context" (p. 67) . This study explores the femininity/masculinity sex role traits as they relate to psychological merger in lesbian couples.

Thirty-eight lesbian couples were recruited through friendship and acquaintance networks, newsletter announcements and direct solicitation of members of the Portland Lesbian Community Project (LCP). Couples had to have been living …

Multidimensional Scaling Analysis Of Simulated Air Combat Maneuvering Performance Data, Donald J. Polzella, Gary B. Reid Jan 1989

Multidimensional Scaling Analysis Of Simulated Air Combat Maneuvering Performance Data, Donald J. Polzella, Gary B. Reid

Psychology Faculty Publications

This paper describes the decomposition of air combat maneuvering by means of multidimensional scaling (MDS). MDS analyses were applied to performance data obtained from expert and novice pilots during simulated air-to-air combat. The results of these analyses revealed that the performance of expert pilots is characterized by advantageous maneuverability and intelligent energy management. It is argued that MDS, unlike simpler metrics, permits the investigator to achieve greater insights into the underlying structure associated with performance of a complex task.

Human Factors, Ergonomics, And Human Factors Engineering: An Analysis Of Definitions, Deborah M. Licht, Donald J. Polzella, Kenneth R. Boff Jan 1989

Human Factors, Ergonomics, And Human Factors Engineering: An Analysis Of Definitions, Deborah M. Licht, Donald J. Polzella, Kenneth R. Boff

Psychology Faculty Publications

This report was prepared in response to a request by the Human Factors Committee of the National Research Council to aid its deliberations regarding a standardized definition of human factors. Though many variations of definitions abound, a formally endorsed unified definition of the field does not exist. CSERIAC's approach to this query was to compile and analyze definitions of human factors (and related terms) from a range of key resource materials and present them in a manner to expedite the Committee's consideration of a unified definition. Subsequent to a review of the human factors literature, we collected definitions, sorted and …

Multidimensional Scaling Analysis Of Simulated Air Combat Maneuvering Performance Data Ii: A Follow-On Study, Donald J. Polzella, Gary B. Reid Jan 1989

Multidimensional Scaling Analysis Of Simulated Air Combat Maneuvering Performance Data Ii: A Follow-On Study, Donald J. Polzella, Gary B. Reid

Psychology Faculty Publications

Multidimensional scaling (MDS) was applied to performance data obtained from expert and novice pilots during simulated air-to-air combat. The analyses revealed the principal performance dimensions to be TACTICAL POSITION (offensive versus defensive), TACTICS ("energy" versus "angle"), and TYPE OF MANEUVERING (low energy versus high energy). High-skilled combat performance was found to be dependent on the interaction between position advantage, intelligent management of kinetic and potential energies, and maneuverability.

The results were analyzed using a 2 x 2 factorial ANOVA design. Part and whole training strategies were directly compared with one another. Team and individual training strategies made up the other direct comparison. Undergraduates (N = 108) were randomly assigned to four training conditions. The subjects were grouped into teams of three assessors. In these teams the assessors needed to exchange information about assessee …

Assessing Soccer Referee Performance Using Work Sample And Conventional Testing Methods, Robert L. Kuhnle Jan 1989

Assessing Soccer Referee Performance Using Work Sample And Conventional Testing Methods, Robert L. Kuhnle

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

A game simulation consisting of game segments filmed from two camera angles, a behavioral event interview (BEI), a written test, and a physical performance test battery were compared for testing college soccer referees as linesmen. A content-oriented strategy (Alba & Dickinson, 1985) was used to prepare the tests. Sixty-one referees from two testing sites were assigned to one of two conditions of physical demand and one of three experience groups. Strong evidence of criterion-related validity was found for the game simulation from the press box camera angle when game simulation scores were compared with peer ratings and assessment scores. Mixed …

The Home-School Interface Parental And Teacher Beliefs About Homework From A Multicultural Perspective, Tania Sebastian Jan 1989

The Home-School Interface Parental And Teacher Beliefs About Homework From A Multicultural Perspective, Tania Sebastian

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The present exploratory study investigated the beliefs and practices of parents of various cultural groups, as well as teachers, regarding educational issues. The central focus was upon homework, the day to day link between school and home. A main objective of the research was to determine how individual and subcultural variations in parenting style (Baumrind, 1973) are linked with attitudes and practices towards the school. Interviews were conducted with 36 parents of 7th and 8th graders in three different ethnic groups, drawn from an urban junior high school in Toronto. There were equal numbers of sons and daughters in each …
