The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And Achievement In An Rotc Leadership Development And Assessment Setting, Robert W. Dinnen
The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And Achievement In An Rotc Leadership Development And Assessment Setting, Robert W. Dinnen
Masters Theses
This study was designed to determine whether there was a positive relationship between an individual's self-esteem and their achievement in a leadership development and assessment setting. While correlational studies have been conducted utilizing self-esteem and achievement as variables, no known study has been conducted with achievement at ROTC Advance Camp as a dependent variable. The hypothesis tested focused on determining if there is a positive relationship between self-esteem and achievement at ROTC Advance Camp. Sixty-six ROTC cadets from five select universities in the state of Illinois were administered the Barksdale Self-Esteem Evaluation Number 35. The results of their evaluation was …
The Relationship Of Career Evaluation Systems (Ces) Test Batteries With Work Production In A Sheltered Workshop, Blake Hegarty
The Relationship Of Career Evaluation Systems (Ces) Test Batteries With Work Production In A Sheltered Workshop, Blake Hegarty
Masters Theses
The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between performance on Career Evaluation Systems' (CES) test batteries and performance on production tasks at CCAR Industries' Manufacturing Plant. Fleishman's factor analytic studies of psychomotor performance were reviewed to demonstrate the conceptual basis for the development of the test batteries. Hester's development of the CES batteries and the factors they measure were discussed.
The subjects were 112 CCAR Industries' clients who were administered Career Evaluation Systems' test battery during vocational evaluations at CCAR Industries' Manufacturing Plant between 1986 and 1992. Fifty-nine subjects met the criteria for inclusion in the final …
The Test-Retest And Inter-Rater Reliability Of The Teacher Rating Of Academic Achievement Motivation, Rachel P. Pitcher
The Test-Retest And Inter-Rater Reliability Of The Teacher Rating Of Academic Achievement Motivation, Rachel P. Pitcher
Masters Theses
The Teacher Rating of Academic Achievement Motivation (TRAAM) is in development as a measure of academic achievement motivation. To examine the scale's test-retest and inter-rater reliability, teachers rated 90 third through sixth grade students. Results indicated that the TRAAM, in general, is reliable. The test-retest reliability coefficient for the TRAAM Total Score was .96. The four factor scores of the TRAAM were also found to be consistent over time with reliability coefficients ranging from .85 to .93. Inter-rater reliability of the TRAAM was also found to be adequate for the Total Score (r=.77). The inter-rater reliability coefficients of the factor …

State-Dependent Learning During Alprazolam Assisted Exposure: A Pilot Study Of Social Phobia, Patrick B. Mcgrath '93
State-Dependent Learning During Alprazolam Assisted Exposure: A Pilot Study Of Social Phobia, Patrick B. Mcgrath '93
Honors Projects
Social phobia is a newly defined disorder, and treatments for it typically involve pharmacotherapy or some form of in vivo exposure. When combining these therapies, there are three possible outcomes: No effect, an additive effect, or an interference effect. If additive, the pharmacotherapy will enhance the extinction of fear, and it will not increase the chance of relapse after drug discontinuation. If there is an interference effect, the pharmacotherapy will block extinction to the phobic situation, and there will be a relapse of anxiety when placed in the phobic situation in the no drug state. If this is the result, …
An Animal Model Of Alzheimer's Disease: Behavioral And Histological Assessment Following Bilateral Intrahippocampal Injections Of B-Amyloid (25-35), David E. Kang '93
An Animal Model Of Alzheimer's Disease: Behavioral And Histological Assessment Following Bilateral Intrahippocampal Injections Of B-Amyloid (25-35), David E. Kang '93
Honors Projects
Pathologically, Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by deposits of neuritic plaques (NP) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) typically found in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and basal forebrain. Increasing evidence suggests that the major constituent of NP, a B-amyloid protein(BAP) composed of 39-42 amino acids, possesses neurotoxic properties. It has been reputed that the neurotoxic properties of BAP(1-40) may be dependent on the aggregational state of the peptide. Recent studies have demonstrated in vitro that a fragment of the B-amyloid protein, BAP(25-35), disrupts intracellular calcium homeostasis, decreases neuronal survival, and potentiates the toxicity of excitatory amino acids (EAA). While some evidence supports …
Assessment Profiles Of Children And Adults Identified As Learning Disabled, Malanie Mcdiarmid '93
Assessment Profiles Of Children And Adults Identified As Learning Disabled, Malanie Mcdiarmid '93
Honors Projects
This study examined four major assessment profiles associated with learning disabled (LD) students and adults: the discrepancy between Verbal and Performance Intelligence Quotient (lQ), with Performance greater than Verbal, the Bannatyne pattern, and the ACID profile, and a profile suggested by Ozols and Rourke (1988). The validity of these profiles was examined by using more reliable diagnostic criteria to avoid the methodological flaws present in other LD profile studies. Subjects were 120 children and adults defined as having an Academic Skills Disorder according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders-Revised (American Psychiatric ;Association, 1987) criteria. The subjects' performances …
The Effects Of Session Time And Satiation On The Form Of The Vi Response Function, Laura Campbell '93
The Effects Of Session Time And Satiation On The Form Of The Vi Response Function, Laura Campbell '93
Honors Projects
There has been considerable recent controversy over the empirical form of the function relating response rate to reinforcement rate on Variable Interval (VI) schedules. Some theories (matching, for example) predict a monotonic relationship between response rate and reinforcement rate. Other theories (behavioral economics, for example) predict a bitonic relationship. There is empirical support for both positions. Recently, Dougan, Kuh, and Vink (in press) have shown that session length is one variable which alters the form of the function. Functions were predominantly monotonic when sessions were short (10 minutes), and predominantly bitonic when sessions were long (30 minutes), when data from …
The Cultivation Of Neighbourhood Centres: A Life Cycle Model, Barbara Anne Derksen
The Cultivation Of Neighbourhood Centres: A Life Cycle Model, Barbara Anne Derksen
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This study focused on the lifecycle of four neighbourhood organizations located in Cambridge, Ontario. The key question in the study was: “How do the various stakeholders in the neighbourhood organizations experience the life cycle of these organizations”? Participants and staff described their experiences and their relationships with each other, staff, the sponsoring agency, the neighbourhood and the social service agencies that interact with neighbourhood organizations. Their responses helped to build a model of community development grounded in their own experiences that will be helpful in education, planning and evaluation. To answer both the key research question and related questions, an …
Citizen Participation In The Development Of Religious Communities As Extended Health Care Centres, Theresa Connie Dunn
Citizen Participation In The Development Of Religious Communities As Extended Health Care Centres, Theresa Connie Dunn
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Citizen participation was encouraged through the use of a needs and resource assessment. The assessment accomplished: 1) a process of involving rural citizens in community decision-making and 2) gathering data useful to the planning of a community chaplaincy program. Seventy participants completed a questionnaire through one of three methods: 1) self-administered by mental health service users, 2) a phone survey of residents in remote rural areas, and 3) a nominal group process involving congregational members. I focused the analysis of the data on: 1) the actual and suggested resources the participants reported for the four needs: personal, spiritual, social and …
Diffusion Of Total Quality Management: An Organizational Self-Production Perspective, Baizhong Zhao
Diffusion Of Total Quality Management: An Organizational Self-Production Perspective, Baizhong Zhao
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
American industries are in the process of a quality revolution. Most companies are busy implementing Total Quality Management (TQM) programs. However, the experience of both Japanese and American companies indicates that successful TQM implementation depends on an understanding of implementation processes, which itself relies on an understanding of organizational self-organizing, for it is through this process that TQM gets diffused and becomes a core component of an organization's culture. Self-organizing is a so-called process-oriented approach, based on theory from cybernetics (Ashby, 1962; Steier & Smith, 1985; von Foerster, 1960), dissipative structure theory (Prigogine & Stengers, 1984), and chaos theory (Gleick, …

Memory Biases In Left Versus Right Implied Motion, Andrea R. Halpern, Michael H. Kelly
Memory Biases In Left Versus Right Implied Motion, Andrea R. Halpern, Michael H. Kelly
Faculty Journal Articles
People remember moving objects as having moved farther along in their path of motion than is actually the case; this is known as representational momentum (RM). Some authors have argued that RM is an internalization of environmental properties such as physical momentum and gravity. Five experiments demonstrated that a similar memory bias could not have been learned from the environment. For right-handed Ss, objects apparently moving to the right engendered a larger memory bias in the direction of motion than did those moving to the left. This effect, clearly not derived from real-world lateral asymmetries, was relatively insensitive to changes …
Effect Of Unilateral Temporal-Lobe Excision On Perception And Imagery Of Songs, Robert J. Zatorre, Andrea R. Halpern
Effect Of Unilateral Temporal-Lobe Excision On Perception And Imagery Of Songs, Robert J. Zatorre, Andrea R. Halpern
Faculty Journal Articles
Auditory imagery for songs was studied in two groups of patients with left or right temporal-lobe excision for control of epilepsy, and a group of matched normal control subjects. Two tasks were used. In the perceptual task, subjects saw the text of a familiar song and simultaneously heard it sung. On each trial they judged if the second of two capitalized lyrics was higher or lower in pitch than the first. The imagery task was identical in all respects except that no song was presented, so that subjects had to generate an auditory image of the song. The results indicated …

The Vocational Interests Of Prisoners: A Preliminary Validation Study Of The Lustig Color Vector Test, Hanoch Livneh, Robert E. Pullo, Paul Lustig
Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
The purpose of this study was to provide empirical evidence for the validity of the Lustig Color Vector Test (LCVT) as a vocational interest measure. The LCVT, a nonverbal instrument, is a schematic attempt to represent the Vector Theory of Behavior which describes human behavior in terms of motion and the laws of physics. A sample of 92 participants was chosen to represent the literate male population of incarcerated offenders in the Wisconsin state prison system.-Participants were administered the LCVT as well as Holland's Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI) and a demographic questionnaire. The results offered tentative support to the notion …
Spiritual Well-Being, Religiosity, And Demographic Variables As Predictors Of The Use Of Christian Counseling Techniques Among Members Of Caps, U.S.A., Samuel Alexander Adams
Spiritual Well-Being, Religiosity, And Demographic Variables As Predictors Of The Use Of Christian Counseling Techniques Among Members Of Caps, U.S.A., Samuel Alexander Adams
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Despite the increasing attention being given to understanding the relationship between psychology and Christianity, there is little research investigating the actual practices of Christian psychotherapists. This study explored the use of Christian counseling techniques by Christian therapists. Specifically, it identified a set of variables which predicted the use of certain Christian counseling techniques among Christian therapist members of the Christian Association for Psychological Studies (CAPS, USA) and described the range and frequency of their use. Participants were 450 randomly sampled, clinical members of CAPS. Of the 450 surveyed, 340 responded, resulting in a 76% return rate. The total sample was …
Transition To Parenthood: The Role Of Self-Complexity, Margo Michelle Gallant
Transition To Parenthood: The Role Of Self-Complexity, Margo Michelle Gallant
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Becoming a parent is a significant event in the adult developmental cycle. Researchers agree that all couples experience at least some form of stress during this transition. The present study investigated the role that self-complexity plays in a couple’s adjustment to becoming first-time parents. Self-complexity, which is defined as the number of roles or activities that an individual uses to describe himself or herself, was previously found to buffer the impact of stressful events among college students (Linville, 1987). Block (1961), however, found that individuals with higher levels of self-complexity were more maladjusted. The main purposes of this study were …
Gender Differences In Perceptions Of Sexual And Nonsexual Cues In Dating, Christine Alksnis
Gender Differences In Perceptions Of Sexual And Nonsexual Cues In Dating, Christine Alksnis
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This study was an initial attempt to understand how people evaluate their dating experiences. The primary objective was to determine whether males and females have different views about the behaviours that constitute positive, negative and typical dating experiences. Undergraduate students (50 males, 70 females) were asked to rate the likelihood of different sexual and nonsexual events in "good", "bad" and "typical" date contexts as well as to provide written descriptions of their own best, worst and typical dates. For good and typical dates, many of the same events were identified as likely to occur by both men and women. However, …
A Developmental Evaluation Of Frequency Information In Lists, Scripts, And Stories, Deborah Ann Connolly
A Developmental Evaluation Of Frequency Information In Lists, Scripts, And Stories, Deborah Ann Connolly
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
In three experiments, the age-invariance hypothesis of frequency memory of Hasher and Zacks was tested. Children and adults listened to atypical actions presented in lists, or embedded in stories that described activities that are scripted, or in stories that described unfamiliar activities. Results from the list-conditions supported the age-invariance hypothesis. Age differences were found in the story conditions; however, they appeared at high, not at low, presented frequencies. The findings are discussed in terms of a developmental change in ability to retrieve the information needed to accurately judge frequency. The results are also discussed in relation to the Script-Pointer—Plus-Tag theory …
Ontario's Mental Health System: The Experience Of Families And Their Perspective On Reform, Eric Laite Macnaughton
Ontario's Mental Health System: The Experience Of Families And Their Perspective On Reform, Eric Laite Macnaughton
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Over 100 family members were interviewed—individually and in focus groups—to gain a picture of their lived experience and their perspective on reform of Ontario's mental health system. The thesis looks at needs of families in two ways. first, by examining the common themes of their experience with the mental health system and with supporting "consumers" in the community; and second, by asking families directly about their satisfaction with existing supports, and about needed additional supports. Focus group participants were asked to make suggestions about innovative models to meet unmet need, and about how families could participate more fully in the …
Applicants' Experience Of The Process Of Seeking Therapy, Stephen M. Saunders
Applicants' Experience Of The Process Of Seeking Therapy, Stephen M. Saunders
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
Assessed the process of seeking psychotherapy, conceptualized as 4 steps: recognizing the problem; deciding therapy might help; deciding to seek therapy; and contacting the mental health system. A process of seeking therapy questionnaire was completed by 275 adult therapy applicants. It ascertained problem duration, alternative coping strategies, difficulty achieving and time needed to achieve the steps, and whether the S had informal help achieving the steps. Results indicated that problems tended to be long-standing; Ss attempted a variety of coping strategies before seeking therapy; and informal help was important throughout the process. Problem recognition was the most difficult, time-consuming step. …
