The Use Of Nonhuman Subjects In Behavior Analysis: A Review Of Jeab Studies, Dylan David Schmorrow
The Use Of Nonhuman Subjects In Behavior Analysis: A Review Of Jeab Studies, Dylan David Schmorrow
Dissertations
This study examined the use of nonhuman subjects in the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, and the level of invasiveness of those studies. The invasiveness level of each study was determined according to the Shapiro and Field (1987) invasiveness rating scale. All studies published from 1958 through 1992 were considered. In addition to rating the individual studies with the invasiveness scale, data were collected concerning the species of the subjects and their number, whether anaesthesia, analgesia, drugs or toxic agents were used, whether surgery took place, levels of deprivation, and if the subjects died.
The findings from this …
Responses Of Female Therapists To Treating Adult Female Survivors Of Incest, Marcia A. Hollingsworth
Responses Of Female Therapists To Treating Adult Female Survivors Of Incest, Marcia A. Hollingsworth
Dissertations
How female therapists are affected by the long-term experience of treating adult female survivors was addressed by exploring therapists’ commonly reported affective, cognitive, physical, and imagery responses. The study specifically examined experienced female therapist responses for evidence of vicarious traumatization (McCann & Pearlman, 1990b), a transformation process whereby therapists who treat trauma victims may experience profound psychological effects, including lasting changes in seven basic cognitive schemas. The study’s findings were also considered in relation to four other models of therapist responses to treating incest survivors: burnout, secondary post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic countertransferences, and countertransference responses.
This study employed a …

Mothers' And Fathers' Perceptions Of Parenting One-Month Old Infants With Respiratory Distress Syndrome Or Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia, Nancy Marron
Student Work
Recent significant advances in the field of neonatology have resulted in increased rates of survival of infants who are born prematurely (Avery & Taeusch, 1984). Although mortality rates have decreased, many of these children and their families may be faced with complications related to prematurity, extended hospitalization, numerous lifesaving medical procedures, and a lengthy recovery.
The Degree Of Eating Disorder Pathology And Its Relation To Depression And Self-Esteem In A Nonclinical College Student Population, Derik M. Thieme '93
The Degree Of Eating Disorder Pathology And Its Relation To Depression And Self-Esteem In A Nonclinical College Student Population, Derik M. Thieme '93
Honors Projects
Research on eating disorders has mainly focused on clinical populations and adolescents. In this study, a nonclinical sample comprised of female college students was studied. The relationship between eating disorder symptomatology and the variables of depression and self-esteem were examined using the following measures: (1) The Eating Disorders Inventory-2; (2) The Beck Depression Inventory; and (3) The Multidimensional Self-Esteem Inventory. A total of fifty-six subjects were studied. It was hypothesized that those subjects who scored higher overall on the EDI-2 would exhibit higher levels of depression and lower levels of self-esteem than those who scored lower overall on the EDI-2. …

Waco Tragedy Product Of Groupthink, Aubrey Immelman
Psychology Faculty Publications
This opinion column employs the eight symptoms of groupthink specified by Irving Janis to evaluate whether the tragic end to the 1993 FBI siege of David Koresh’s Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas — which culminated in deaths of 76 civilians — could have been the product of groupthink.
A Model To Predict Recycling Behaviors: Reusing Ajzen's Model One More Time, Kathleen L. Kiwala
A Model To Predict Recycling Behaviors: Reusing Ajzen's Model One More Time, Kathleen L. Kiwala
Dissertations and Theses
The prediction of self-reported recycling behaviors was examined using variations and expansions of Ajzen's theory of planned behavior. Three hundred and forty-eight residents from the Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties in Oregon completed a questionnaire that assessed attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, intentions, self-reports of recycling behavior, moral obligation and past behavior. Recycling behaviors and intentions were grouped into three categories of difficulty by a factor analysis. Structural equation analysis did not support Ajzen's model. It was found that although attitudes was correlated with the antecedent variables, it did not directly influence intentions or behaviors. Perceived behavioral control had …
Personnel Managers' Attitudes Towards Affirmative Action & Its Potential Correlates, Donna Dunville
Personnel Managers' Attitudes Towards Affirmative Action & Its Potential Correlates, Donna Dunville
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Despite the controversy surrounding Affirmative Action (AA), relatively little research has appeared about attitudes towards these programs. In this research, an exploratory approach is implemented to assess the support of personnel managers for the theory of AA as well as the mechanisms designed to carry it out. Also, the relationship to Supreme Court decisions, relevant legislation, and numerous demographic, attitudinal, and organizational variables are examined for their impact on Affirmative Action attitudes. A questionnaire was utilized to assess support for AA and its correlates. The majority of personnel managers indicate support for both AA in theory and the mechanisms required …

Training Program Content Validation: A Practical Application Of Educative Techniques, Julia A. Howard-Johnson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
A McDonald’s training program for the positions of grill and counter was evaluated in order to identify recommendations for curriculum refinement or enhancements. The methodological approaches developed by Ford and Wroten (1984) and Bownas, Bosshardt, and Donnelly (1985) were applied. Three evaluation assessment inventories were developed: The Job task Inventory, The training Emphasis Inventory, and The Training Effectiveness Inventory. These inventories were constructed with the assistance of 49 managers, trainers, and employees with six or more months of service. Four managers, seven trainers, and 22 recent training graduates responded to the appropriate inventory and these ratings were used in the …
Concerns Of Young Adolescents As They Transition From The Elementary School To The Middle Level School, Kenneth L. Brighton
Concerns Of Young Adolescents As They Transition From The Elementary School To The Middle Level School, Kenneth L. Brighton
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Major changes in life can be problematic for individuals at any age. But for young adolescents who suddenly discover that almost every aspect of their being is in a state of flux, the transition from the elementary school environment to the middle school setting can be an additional source of anxiety. This study identified the specific concerns that young adolescents held as they anticipated promotion to the middle level, the validity and longevity of those concerns, and the differences in how sixth grade students cope with the transition compared to seventh grade students making the same transition to the middle …
The Relationship Between Perceived Parenting Styles And Adolescent Locus Of Control And Self-Concept, Lisa Ann Mcclun
The Relationship Between Perceived Parenting Styles And Adolescent Locus Of Control And Self-Concept, Lisa Ann Mcclun
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Relationships between adolescents' perceptions of their parents' responsiveness and demandingness, adolescents' locus of control orientation, and adolescents' self-concept ratings were investigated. Subjects included 198 students from a middle school in northern Utah. Subjects were given the Nowicki-Strickland Internal-External Control Scale for Children, the Harter Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents, and the Perceived Parenting Style Survey.
Results indicated that subjects who perceived their parents as being authoritative had significantly (p < .001) more internal locus of control scores than subjects who reported either the permissive or authoritarian styles. Also, self-concept scores were significantly higher (p < .001) for the authoritative group than the authoritarian group on the Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents subscales of Scholastic Competence, Social Acceptance, Physical Appearance, Behavioral Conduct, Close Friendship, and Global Self Worth. The permissive group reported significantly lower scores (p < .05) on the subscales of Scholastic Competence and Behavioral Conduct. There was also a significant negative correlation (p < .001) between locus of control scores and the subscale scores on the Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents.
Although there were some limitations in the study methodology, the significant differences found between the groups indicated that the authoritative parenting style positively correlates with higher self-concept and …
The Significance Of Dispositional Optimism And Coping In Predicting Psychological Distress, Life Satisfaction, Health Perception, And Frequency Of Discharges In The Automatic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (Aicd) Patient, Paul B. Damin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Dispositional optimism, as a stable outcome expectancy, has been shown to predict health outcomes in several contexts. Research has demonstrated that health-impaired subjects with optimistic outlooks fared better than those with a pessimistic outlook. Choice of coping strategies has been theorized as the mediating factor through which optimism operates. However, the construct of dispositional optimism has been challenged as a polar opposite of neuroticism, thus contending that optimism is not an independent notion.
The present study was designed to evaluate further the theoretical underpinnings of dispositional optimism theory. Subjects were selected from a population of cardiac patients who received an …
Characteristics Of College Students Seeking Mental Health Services And Reasons Given For Choosing The Mental Health Service Provider, Ann Leslie Athorp
Characteristics Of College Students Seeking Mental Health Services And Reasons Given For Choosing The Mental Health Service Provider, Ann Leslie Athorp
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The literature related to college mental health counseling suggested numerous possible factors which were hypothesized to play a significant role in choosing a mental health care agency. A questionnaire was constructed to measure demographics of students utilizing the Utah State University Counseling Center, spontaneous reasons for choosing the center as the preferred mental health agency, and literature-based reasons for the same. Subjects reported that they chose the university counseling center for practical reasons such as cost and location. However, factor analysis of the literature - based reasons endorsed by these subjects suggested that trust in the counseling center and its …
The Relationship Between Eating Disorders And Ego Identity Development, Mary Denise Sparks
The Relationship Between Eating Disorders And Ego Identity Development, Mary Denise Sparks
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The age of onset for eating disorders (anorexia and bulimia nervosa) among females is typically late adolescence. In the present study, it was hypothesized that the onset of eating disorders is related to the late-adolescent developmental task of identity development. Thirty-three late adolescent and young adult females who met DSM-III-R criteria for an eating disorder (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or eating disorder not otherwise specified) and 33 control females completed the Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity status -- 2 (EOMEIS-2). Results of chi square analyses revealed no significant differences between eating disorder and control females with regard to status …

Perceived Control: Precursors To Achievement In Oglala Lakota Children, Stephen Blaine Cook
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The discrepancy between American Indian and Caucasian children in academic achievement is well documented. Theorists suggest a connection between perceived locus of control and the level of educational performance. This study first sought to determine if the factor structure of a measure of the perception of lo cu s of control (Multidimensional Measure of Children's Perceptions of Control) was similar for Caucasian and American Indian (Oglala Lakota) children. Second, the study sought to determine if there were differences between the groups on the MMCPC subtest scores. Finally, the study sought to determine the relationship between locus of control and academic …
Conceptualizing The Youthful Male Sex Offender: A Meta-Analytic Examination Of Offender Characteristics By Offense Type, Roger B. Graves
Conceptualizing The Youthful Male Sex Offender: A Meta-Analytic Examination Of Offender Characteristics By Offense Type, Roger B. Graves
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A review of the literature demonstrates that, to date, no concerted effort has been made to conceptualize and develop typologies for youthful male sex offenders on the basis of offense type. Such typologies are deemed important to the understanding of possible developmental antecedents for sexual offending, as well as to the development of theory-driven, empirically based interventions and preventions. This study attempts to begin the conceptualization process through a meta-analytic examination of 140 research samples that provide data on over 16,000 individuals who have committed sexual offenses as youth. Three subtypes of offenders are identified on the basis of offense …
