"Epidemic" Depression In School-Age Youth, Trudy L. Erickson Jan 1999

"Epidemic" Depression In School-Age Youth, Trudy L. Erickson

Graduate Research Papers

With the traditional image of children as happy and care-free, it has been troubling to think of them suffering the effects of major depression and dysthymia. Successful intervention for.depressive youth is complicated by failure to diagnose, limited referral or consuItation, and resolute parental denial.

The purpose of this paper is to inform the reader about depression in today's student population. Depression will be defined and described as it is manifested in youth. Typical symptoms and proposed etiologies will be discussed. Finally, suggested interventions will be addressed, although research concerning interventions for depressed youth, particularly children, has been sparse.

Behavioral Interactions And Conflict Among Domestic Dogs, Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs, And People In Boulder, Colorado, Marc Bekoff, Robert W. Ickes Jan 1999

Behavioral Interactions And Conflict Among Domestic Dogs, Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs, And People In Boulder, Colorado, Marc Bekoff, Robert W. Ickes

Ethology Collection

Interactions among domestic dogs (Canis familiaris), black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus), and people were studied at Dry Creek, Boulder, Colorado. Our objective was to develop a basic understanding of the nature of dog–prairie dog interactions in this recreational area, because this is an issue that has high visibility and over which there is conflict in Boulder: There are those who want dogs to run free regardless of their impact on the behavior and lives of prairie dogs and those who want to protect prairie dogs and have dogs restrained or go elsewhere. We found that dogs clearly influenced the behavior …

Hooking The Big Idea: Working Titles In Creative Problem Solving By Young Latino Adolescents, Juliann Hector

Theses Digitization Project

Problem representation/problem finding skills are frequently the catalyst facilitating adroit knowledge base access and subsequent positive creative outcomes in adult populations. To determine whether judged creativity is similarly enhanced through young adolescents' use of a working title representation strategy within a curriculum knowledge base, 40 Latino partyicipants at two Southern California middle schools received brief written interactive directions for one of two different types of problem representation or a third, non-representational control group.

The Emotional Consequences Of Victimization, Kim Van Zee Jan 1999

The Emotional Consequences Of Victimization, Kim Van Zee

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

A sample ofl 04 boys and girls from three grade levels (second, fourth, and sixth) were read stories depicting acts of victimization and questioned about how both the victim and victimizer in the story would be feeling. In one interview, children were asked to pretend that they were the victimizer and in another interview 3-4 weeks later, a hypothetical victimizer was used. Order of interviews (self as victimizer first or second) was assigned randomly. Acts of both physical and psychological harm were portrayed in which the victimizer either obtained a tangible gain or no gain was received. Participants of all …

Functionally Dissociating Aspects Of Event Memory: The Effects Of Combined Perirhinal And Postrhinal Cortex Lesions On Object And Place Memory In The Rat., T J Bussey, J L Muir, J P Aggleton

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Reciprocal interactions between the hippocampus and the perirhinal and parahippocampal cortices form core components of a proposed temporal lobe memory system. For this reason, the involvement of the hippocampus in event memory is thought to depend on its connections with these cortical areas. Contrary to these predictions, we found that NMDA-induced lesions of the putative rat homologs of these cortical areas (perirhinal plus postrhinal cortices) did not impair performance on two allocentric spatial tasks highly sensitive to hippocampal dysfunction. Remarkably, for one of the tasks there was evidence of a facilitation of performance. The same cortical lesions did, however, disrupt …

The Perceived Effectiveness Of Christian And Secular Graduate Training Programs In Preparing Christian Psychologists To Deal With Experiences Of Sexual Attraction, Katheryn Rhoads Meek, Mark R. Mcminn Jan 1999

The Perceived Effectiveness Of Christian And Secular Graduate Training Programs In Preparing Christian Psychologists To Deal With Experiences Of Sexual Attraction, Katheryn Rhoads Meek, Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Most psychologists experience feelings of sexual attraction toward clients, and for some Christian therapists this situation can be further complicated by their tendency to deny such sexual attraction. How effective are graduate training programs in teaching Christian psychologists to manage feelings of sexual attraction in professional contexts? In this survey, 258 Christian psychologists answered questions regarding their graduate training. A positive training environment was related to healthy coping responses in managing feelings of sexual attraction, and graduates of explicitly Christian training programs reported greater satisfaction with training conditions than graduates of secular programs. Those involved in training professional psychologists should …

Perceiving And Responding To The Personal/Group Discrimination Discrepancy, Mindi D. Foster, Kimberley Matheson Jan 1999

Perceiving And Responding To The Personal/Group Discrimination Discrepancy, Mindi D. Foster, Kimberley Matheson

Psychology Faculty Publications

To explain why minority group members recognize less personal than group discrimination, research has focused on cognitive processes. While within self-categorization theory it may be argued the discrepancy is a function of a salient social self that perceptually discounts the personal self, it can also be argued that depersonalization allows for the cognitive possibility of perceiving similar amounts of personal and group discrimination. The present study suggested that, consistent with group consciousness theories, the social self may serve to both discount as well as integrate the social self, depending on the way in which the social self is defined. Using …

Acting Out Against Gender Discrimination: The Effects Of Different Social Identities, Mindi D. Foster Jan 1999

Acting Out Against Gender Discrimination: The Effects Of Different Social Identities, Mindi D. Foster

Psychology Faculty Publications

Self-categorization theory suggests that when a social identity is salient, group- oriented behavior will ensue. Thus, women should be likely to act out against gender discrimination when their social identity as women is salient. However, self-categorization theory has typically defined a social identity along stereo- types, which may serve instead to maintain the status quo. Two studies therefore examined the effects of two different social identities on taking action against discrimination. Participants were female students (Anglo American (93%), African American (2%), Native American (2%), Hispanic (1%), Asian American (1%) and Other (1%)). Study 1 examined a structural model and Study …

Missing Pieces Of Memory: A Rejection Of Type Classifications And A Demand For A More Subjective Approach Regarding Adult Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Lonnie B. Richardson Jan 1999

Missing Pieces Of Memory: A Rejection Of Type Classifications And A Demand For A More Subjective Approach Regarding Adult Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Lonnie B. Richardson

St. Thomas Law Review

Part I of this Comment will address Freud's discovery of the effects of childhood sexual abuse. Freud's subsequent suppression of his discovery has led in part to the contemporary disbelief in the existence of childhood sexual abuse. Part II will focus on the psychological aspects of incest, exploring the impact of trauma on children and the resulting repression of the traumatic memories. Part III will review the policy considerations and recent developments involving the statute of limitations in delayed discovery of childhood sexual abuse cases. This part addresses the need to permit plaintiffs to sue for latent harm that went …

Effects Of Psychological And Physiological Stressors On Interleukin-1ss Levels And Behavioral Measures In Mice, Ann Marie Knapp Jan 1999

Effects Of Psychological And Physiological Stressors On Interleukin-1ss Levels And Behavioral Measures In Mice, Ann Marie Knapp

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

The effects of stress on immune system functioning is an important area of current and upcoming research. In order to determine the importance of stressor type on immune dysfunction, the effects of psychological and physiological stress on immune systems in mice were monitored through both molecular and behavioral means. Groups of mice were systematically exposed to non-contact exposure to a rat in order to induce psychological stress, and forced periods of swimming to induce physiological stress. The stress exposure was applied every other day for 30 days to create a chronic stress situation. Stress levels imposed by the stressors were …

Intergenerational Effects Of Conflict In Intimate Relationships, Rebecca Lee Matlock Jan 1999

Intergenerational Effects Of Conflict In Intimate Relationships, Rebecca Lee Matlock

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

A survey was used to assess the effects of parental marital status and conflict on the intimate dating relationships of 154 undergraduate volunteers from two private Catholic institutions. Seventy-three percent of the participants were female, 13% were from divorced families, and most participants ranged from 19 to 24 years of age. The effects of parental divorce and conflict were found to be both beneficial and harmful to the adjustment of offspring and development of intimate relationships. Parental divorce, conflict, and low levels of family functioning were associated with increased involvement in steady dating relationships and more self-reported happiness within current …
