Associations Of Test Anxiety And Selected Variables On The Performance Of Adult And Technical Education And Psychology Students, Claudia Coleman
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The ADIQ was used to explore what, if any, attachment and clinical issues might be related to test anxiety. Furthermore, these variables were compared with age and size of city in which one was raised. The participants were 41 college students from a university located in Appalachia. It was found that a.) Ambivalent attachment patterns with the father had a significant negative effect on test anxiety b.) Age or gender was not significantly related to test anxiety. c.) Size of city in which a student was raised in resulted in no significant effect. d.) Negative attachment with a significant other …

The current study examined the School Psychology Practicum III Summer Enrichment Program at Marshall University Graduate College. This study investigated the expectation levels and perceptions in relation to the course goals and program objectives. The method of data collection included a questionnaire developed from the Practicum III goals and objectives. The questionnaire was designed to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. The close-ended data were analyzed by descriptive statistical measures for descriptives, frequencies, crosstabulation and correlations. Data were interpreted using a frequency analysis and the Pearson correlation coefficient (r). Results indicated a positive correlation between the students' expectations of the …
Effect Of A Modified Lincs Learning Strategy On The Achievement Of 4th Grade Students With Learning Disabilities, Shelby Brooke Haines
Effect Of A Modified Lincs Learning Strategy On The Achievement Of 4th Grade Students With Learning Disabilities, Shelby Brooke Haines
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The LINCS learning strategy, published by Edwin S. Ellis (1992), University of Kansas Institute for Research of Learning Disabilities, is a starter strategy used as a memory devise for vocabulary. The goals' of the strategy were to increase independent learning, memorize key vocabulary, provide a sense of control over learning and to promote motivation about learning new strategies. It is also clearly defined in the instruction manual that for students to effectively utilize this strategy they must perform with a fourth grade reading level or above (Ellis, 1992). It was hypothesized that by making modifications to compensate for the students' …
Superior Haptic Perceptual Selectivity In Late-Blind And Very-Low-Vision Subjects, Morton Heller, Deneen Brackett
Superior Haptic Perceptual Selectivity In Late-Blind And Very-Low-Vision Subjects, Morton Heller, Deneen Brackett
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
Blindfolded sighted, congenitally blind, late-blind, and very-low-vision subjects were tested on a tangible version of the embedded-figures test. The results of ANOVAs on accuracy measures yielded superior performance by the very-low-vision and late-blind subjects compared with the blindfolded sighted and congenitally blind participants. Accuracy of the congenitally blind subjects was similar to that of the blindfolded sighted participants. However, all groups of blind subjects were significantly faster than the blindfolded sighted subjects. It is suggested that experience with pictures combined with haptic skill aid perceptual selectivity in touch.

Thirty Years Of Integrative Doctoral Training: Historic Developments, Assessment Of Outcomes, And Recommendations For The Future, W Brad Johnson, Mark R. Mcminn
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
Integrative clinical psychology doctoral programs explicitly blend religious faith with professional training. During the past thirty years, there has been a steady increase in the number of integrative programs in the United States, yet the mission-relevant training outcomes of these programs remain largely unknown. In this article, we review published literature relative to integrative doctoral programs and offer an assessment of the training outcomes recently reported by those integrative programs currently accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). We briefly summarize the distinctive strengths and relative weaknesses of integrative programs and consider the primary challenges they now face. We conclude …

Multiple Intelligences In The Efl Classroom: A Perspective In Context, Irena Vodopija- Krstanoviæ
Multiple Intelligences In The Efl Classroom: A Perspective In Context, Irena Vodopija- Krstanoviæ
MA TESOL Collection
This paper examines the implication of Multiple Intelligences Theory for learning styles in the EFL classroom. The multiple intelligence profiles of students and teachers at two secondary schools were obtained in order to determine their strengths and weaknesses in the different intelligences. In addition, the teachers’ and learner’s preferences for EFL activities catering for the intelligences were defined. Furthermore, the frequency of use of the EFL activities was examined in order to determine how the various intelligences were actually addressed in the teaching and learning processes. The research was conducted in Rijeka, Croatia, thus providing insights into a specific cultural …

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between identity styles and recovery from substance abuse. Consistent findings have established a relationship be- tween identity diffusion and substance misuse, but no research has explored the influence of identity styles on recovery processes. Participants (N = 252) from treatment and recovery-based facilities and groups using a 12-step recovery model were assessed with the Identity Style Inventory (White, Wampler, & Winn, 1998) and self-report measures of pretreatment addiction, length of continuous abstinence, quality of recovery, and recovery progress. Those with a diffuse/avoidant style had shorter lengths of continuous abstinence, fewer …

Impact Of A Brief Workshop On Stages Of Change Profiles In Athletes, Sam Zizzi, Frank M. Perna
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This report examines the impact of a psychoeducational workshop on athletes’ stages of change for use of mental skills training. Fourteen teams participated in a sport psychology workshop including seven women’s teams (n = 124) and seven men’s teams (n = 96). Teams were assessed on decisional balance (pros and cons) and stages of change variables before and after the workshop. As hypothesized, athletes reported significantly higher pros and contemplation scores after the workshop, with corresponding decreases in cons and precontemplation scores. Moderate effect sizes (.35 - .68) supported a positive impact of the workshop on athletes’ perceptions of mental …

The new millennium was not yet one year old when it was rocked by the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001. How does the public regard the continued protection of individual rights, after this greatest terrorist attack in U.S. history? This has naturally been a topic of intense and thorough media reporting in the United States, and worldwide. In the uneasy months following the WTC attack, an interdisciplinary team of researchers at Fordham University designed and conducted a survey of public opinions on terrorism, with several distinct objectives: 1) to question a representative sample of adults in Greater New York, …

Borderline Personality Disorder : A Comparison Of Linehan And Kernberg's Treatment Modalities, Janet M. Riley
Graduate Research Papers
About 30% of clients worldwide are diagnosed as Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) (Bohus et al., 2000). BPD is a complex disorder and difficult to treat. Therefore, it is necessary for counselors to gain as much knowledge about treatment modalities and their effectiveness as possible. This paper attempts to define BPD by looking closely at its history.and describing the criteria for diagnosis. Linehan's Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Kernberg's Object Relational Theory (ORT) are compared as to their effectiveness in working with clients who exhibit symptoms of BPD.

After viewing a film of a mother hitting her son, a film not seen by the college student interviewers, children were misinformed about a detail (via exposure to a misleadingquestion) as well as explicitly coached to disclose 3 false details. The children were then interviewed by interviewers who had previously learned 1 of 3 different interviewing procedures: the Yuille Step-Wise Interview developed by J. C. Yuille, R. Hunter,R. Joffe, & J. Zaparniuk (1993); a doll play interview developed by Action for Child Protection Inc. (1994); or the Modified Structured Interview developed for this study. The Modified Structured Interview yielded more …
Entheogens: True Or False?, Roger Walsh
Entheogens: True Or False?, Roger Walsh
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Despite 40 years of dialogue, debate still continues over whether psychedelics are capable of
inducing genuine mystical experiences. This paper first reviews the arguments against this possibility
and shows that all of them contain shortcomings. One reason the debate still continues is
that there has been no adequate theory of mystical states and their relationship to the factors
which produce them. Consequently a theory of mystical states based on Charles Tart’s systems
model of consciousness is proposed. This theory suggests how identical states of consciousness can
be induced by very different means, including contemplative practices and chemical substances,
and yet …
Gnostic Dilemmas In Western Psychologies Of Spirituality1, Harry T. Hunt
Gnostic Dilemmas In Western Psychologies Of Spirituality1, Harry T. Hunt
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Early Gnosticism is identified as a form of Weber’s inner-worldly mysticism that, following the
critique of Plotinus, entailed spiritual metapathologies of inflated grandiosity, despair, and/or
social withdrawal. These vulnerabilities re-emerge in the naturalistic psychologies of spirituality
begun by Emerson, Nietzsche, Jung, and Maslow and more implicitly within contemporary personality
and neuropsychological research on numinous/transpersonal experience. An updated
version of Gnostic dilemma and its conflicted dualism may be endemic to any would-be science
of the spiritual and to much current transpersonal psychology as well.

Mysticism And Its Cultural Expression: An Inquiry Into The Description Of Mystical Experience And Its Ontological And Epistemological Nature, Evgeny Torchinov
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
The purpose of this paper is to critically explore the nature and ontological and epistemological
significance of differences observed in how various cultural traditions describe and explain such
experiences. After an initial consideration of definitional issues, the article focuses on the arguments
supporting and challenging the idea of mystical experience being a universal phenomenon
and a vehicle for true knowledge. The article also examines the problem of the unity of the mystical
experience as a definite state of consciousness and the multiplicity of its sociocultural and
civilizational expressions and descriptions conditioned by different cultural and historical factors.

Progress And Opportunities In Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual And Transgender Health Communications, Laurie A. Drabble, J. Keatley, G. Marcelle
Faculty Publications
This article describes elements of effective health communication and highlights strategies that may best be adopted or adapted in relation to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations. Studies have documented the utility of multidimensional approaches to health communication from the macro level of interventions targeting entire populations to the micro level of communication between health care provider and consumer. Although evidence of health disparities in LGBT communities underscores the importance of population-specific interventions, health promotion campaigns rarely target these populations and health communication activities seldom account for the diversity of LGBT communities. Advances in health communication suggest promising direction …

Induction And Expression Of Cocaine-Induced Behavioral Sensitization: Modulation By A Partial D₂-Like Agonist, Janet Marie Sibole
Theses Digitization Project
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a partial D₂-like dopamine agonist (i.e. terguride) would block the induction or expression of cocaine-induced behavioral sensitization in pre-weanling rats. The ability of terguride to induce behavioral sensitization was also examined, as partial D₂-like agonists have agonistic actions in cases of low dopaminergic tone.

Persuasive Behavior As A Moderator Of The Relationship Between Strategic Behavior And Leadership Effectiveness, Daniel Rojas Vieira
Theses Digitization Project
Based on the notion that leader behaviors are mutually facilitative on their effects on leader effectiveness, this study tested the hypothesis that Persuasive behaviors enhance the predictive relationship between Strategic behaviors and Leadership Effectiveness. Persuasive was hypothesized to act as an enhancer based on the notion that the leader's ability to influence others and develop followership can enhance the impact of a leader's ability to set strategy, provide direction, make decisions and plan on perceived effectiveness.
