Birth Order Effects On Academic Performance, January Boston, Kristal Cook
Birth Order Effects On Academic Performance, January Boston, Kristal Cook
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
In the experiment, 85 participants were recruited to participate in a questionnaire regarding birth order and academic performance by grade point averages (GPA). The survey was conducted to determine if there was a relationship between an individual's birth order and an individual's academic performance. Both of the experimenters come from relatively large families so we were interested to see if there was a positive or negative relationship between academic performance and birth orders. There was statistical significance between birth order and GPA however; the positive correlation was between the youngest siblings and the highest GPA.
Moods And Their Effects, Leaha Sharpe
Moods And Their Effects, Leaha Sharpe
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
The purpose of this project is to find out whether positive or negative moods will carry over into an experiment with a simple fill in the blank statement, which states, “When it comes down to it, people are basically _______”. Participants used in this study consisted of 50 undergraduate student volunteers from Lindenwood University. The participant was asked to answer the previous statement and then to fill in a questionnaire regarding the current and normal moods of the individual. Statistically, there was no significant correlation between the statement and the current mood of the participant. It is concluded that participants …
An Examination Of The General Mobility Of Older Adults Based On Late-Life Depression And Its Treatment, Heather Kossick
An Examination Of The General Mobility Of Older Adults Based On Late-Life Depression And Its Treatment, Heather Kossick
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Older adults experience a variety of cognitive and physical declines as they age. Consequently, these changes can impact mobility and mental health (i.e., depression). Studies have suggested a relationship between driving habits changes (in particular, driving cessation) and depression (Fonda, Wallace & Herzog, 2001; Marottoli et al., 1997). Very little research has been conducted to examine the relationship between depression and other mobility changes in treated and untreated community dwelling older adults. Older drivers who ranged in age from 65 to 91 with a mean age of 73 completed the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) (Radloff, 1977), Life …
A Survey Of Teaming And Assessment Practices Of Practitioners Trained In Transdisciplinary Play-Based Assessment, Breanna Bartley
A Survey Of Teaming And Assessment Practices Of Practitioners Trained In Transdisciplinary Play-Based Assessment, Breanna Bartley
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This research project is an electronic survey of Western Kentucky University graduates of an OSEP funded personnel preparation project (Project TEAM) from the years 1993-2000. The program trained graduate students in transdisciplinary play based assessment from the disciplines of psychology, speech/language pathology, and Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (IECE) through a series of coursework, seminars and an internship. Transdisciplinary play based assessment (TPBA) is recommended by experts and learned societies in the early childhood field and is considered to be child friendly, provides a holistic view of the child and promotes communication and collaboration between the professionals and family (Linder, 1990; …
A Comparison Of Two Measures Of Oral Reading Fluency, Kara Bletzinger
A Comparison Of Two Measures Of Oral Reading Fluency, Kara Bletzinger
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Reading fluency is an important part of the process of learning to read. It is commonly assessed by the use of Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) techniques; however, a new assessment method emerged in the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Achievement- Third Edition (WJ-III). Only one previous study had examined the validity of the Reading Fluency test from the WJ-III by comparing it to established CBM measures of reading fluency for a sample of third-grade students. The resulting correlation between the two measures supported the validity of the WJIII Reading Fluency test, but it was unclear as to the two tests' relationship across grade …
Developmental And Gender Patterns In Social Information Processing: Social Problem-Solving And Social Goals, April Bowersox
Developmental And Gender Patterns In Social Information Processing: Social Problem-Solving And Social Goals, April Bowersox
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine patterns of development and gender in first- through fifth-grade children's (N = 514) social information processing, as well as the role emotion plays in these patterns. Developmental patterns and goal selection have been relatively understudied in past social information processing literature. Videotaped ambiguous provocations were presented in which provocateur's emotion displays were manipulated (two each of happy, angry, and sad); children imagined being the provocateur's victim. Results revealed age and gender differences in children's goal selection and social problem-solving. Provocateur's emotion displays were also found to Influence goal selection and problem-solving in …
Gender, Occupational Position, And Incivility: The Role Of Status On Rude Behaviors At Work, Sherri Settle
Gender, Occupational Position, And Incivility: The Role Of Status On Rude Behaviors At Work, Sherri Settle
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study examined the role of status (i.e., occupational position and gender) in the frequency and experience of workplace incivility. Participants were 89 university students over the age of 20 who currently were employed and completed measures assessing their experiences of incivility at work, the instigator of the incivility, and jobrelated outcomes (i.e., turnover intent, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment). Consistent with hypotheses, supervisors were more likely to be instigators of incivility than coworkers. Participants also reported lower job satisfaction when the instigator was a supervisor, and lower organizational commitment and higher turnover intent when the instigator was male. These …

Impact Of Environmental Disturbance On The Stability And Benefits Of Individual Status Within Dominance Hierarchies, Lynne U. Sneddon, Sophie Hawkesworth, Victoria A. Braithwaite, Julia Yerbury
Ethology Collection
Changes in environmental conditions affect social interactions and thus may modify an individual’s competitive ability within a social group. We subjected three-spined sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus, housed in groups of four individuals, to environmental perturbations to assess the impact on dominance hierarchy stability. Hierarchy stability decreased during increased turbulence or lowered water levels (‘simulated drought’) whereas control hierarchies became more stable in a constant environment. The dominant individual either became more aggressive and remained dominant during the environmental manipulation or was usurped by a lower rank member. Only simulated drought affected rates of aggression where levels of aggression were higher after …

Investigation Into The Perception Of Beauty, Elysa Priester, Heather Kraft
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
The possibility of a connection between the sense of smell and the perception of beauty was investigated. Twenty-two participants were sorted into three different groups: group 1 (no stimulus), group 2 (negative stimulus), and group 3 (positive stimulus). The research procedure consisted of participants filling out a quick survey before and after the experiment to evaluate mood. Each individual was then asked to rate the attractiveness of the ten models. The hypothesis was that smell would have an impact on perception, a negative impact associated with a negative smell, a positive impact associated with a positive smell. No statistical significance …

Glasses And Facial Recognition, Rebecca Knoelke
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
This study investigates whether glasses on a face reduce the accuracy with which people recognize that face. Forty-eight Lindenwood University undergraduates with a mean age of 20.25 years participated in this study. Two series of pictures were shown to the participants. The first contained pictures of models with and without glasses, and the second contained only pictures of models without glasses. The participants were asked to identify pictures of models in the second series who had also been in the first. A t-test revealed that participants recognized more pictures of models whom they initially viewed without glasses and fewer pictures …
Possible Undue Stress Factors On Graduating Seniors, Steven L. Hahne
Possible Undue Stress Factors On Graduating Seniors, Steven L. Hahne
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
The purpose of this study is to determine whether the hypothesis of the experiment is true, which was to find if the student body thinks that a policy to which the graduating seniors must turn in all graded work two weeks before the final exam is fair. It also offers a chance for the student body to voice opinions or suggestions in an open and anonymous questionnaire format. Fifty students chose to partake in a questionnaire that included questions about the university’s policy. They were divided into two groups: one group had twenty-three students [freshman and sophomores] of Human Subject …
Effects Of Chocolate On A Person’S Immediate Mood, Aaron Tighe, Katherine Hannemann
Effects Of Chocolate On A Person’S Immediate Mood, Aaron Tighe, Katherine Hannemann
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
The following presents a study of chocolate and its effect on a person’s immediate mood. Prior research has suggested that chocolate affects a person biologically through neurotransmitters in the brain which can lead to an elevation in a person’s mood. Our study hopes to take this evidence a step further and discover if chocolate can alter one’s mood immediately, or if the chemicals in chocolate are released gradually, taking longer to affect a person’s mood. The participants were mainly recruited through the Human Subject Pool at Lindenwood University and were administered two surveys: one before a treat was consumed, and …
Hours Worked Versus Academic Grades In College Students, Erin Ferguson, Shelly Fuess
Hours Worked Versus Academic Grades In College Students, Erin Ferguson, Shelly Fuess
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
A students’ grade point average has a huge impact on the life of a student. This study proved that the amount of hours worked is not reflective of the students’ grade point average which proved our hypothesis incorrect. Past studies have shown varied results on grade point average and the amount of hours a student works. Individual differences may be a determining factor in considering how the individual balances work and school. There were sixty participates in this study from Lindenwood University. The results of this study showed a negative correlation of -.043 between the two variables.
A Realistic Job Preview For Deputy Jailer Applicants, Joseph Dunn
A Realistic Job Preview For Deputy Jailer Applicants, Joseph Dunn
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
A common method for reducing turnover in organizations is the implementation of a realistic job preview (RJP). Unlike typical job descriptions that might be seen in newspapers, on the Internet, or on television, the differentiating characteristic of an RJP is that both positive and negative aspects of the job are presented to the prospective employee such that the applicant has a very realistic idea of the nature of the job. An RJP in both an audio-visual format and a written brochure was developed for deputy jailer applicants at the Warren County Regional Jail in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Consistent with hypotheses, …

An Examination Of The Similarities Between Same-Grade Friends And Different-Grade Friends, Brenna Kelley
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine the similarity between same-grade and different-grade friendship pairs compared to randomly paired children in the same grade and in different grades. Previous research has focused primarily on examining same-grade children's friendships and has not examined friendships of children differing in grade. This study examined similarities between same- and different-grade friends on teacher-rated behaviors and peer relations variables. Children in 78 ungraded primary classrooms (N = 908) participated in a socio-metric interview and were rated by their teachers using the Teacher-Child Rating Scale (T-CRS, Hightower, 1986). Friendship pairs were composed of children who …

Memory & Cognition: What Difference Does Gender Make?, Donna J. Bridge
Memory & Cognition: What Difference Does Gender Make?, Donna J. Bridge
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Small but significant gender differences, typically favoring women, have previously been observed in experiments measuring human episodic memory performance. In three studies measuring episodic memory, we compared performance levels for men and women. Secondary analysis from a pairedassociate learning task revealed a superior ability for women to learn single function pairs (i.e. words that are represented in only one pair), but performance levels for double function pairs (i.e. pairs that contain words that are also used in one other pair) were similar for men and women. We also reanalyzed data from a recognition experiment that used pictures as stimuli, and …
A Systematic Review Of The Methodology Of Expressive Writing Intervention Studies: Examining Location, Vanessa Juth
A Systematic Review Of The Methodology Of Expressive Writing Intervention Studies: Examining Location, Vanessa Juth
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Expressive writing interventions pertain to emotional disclosure through structured writing. Despite the encouraging results of controlled expressive writing studies, efforts to expand it into applied settings have been less successful and results have been more inconsistent. One varying factor among pertinent studies is the investigators’ alteration of the location of writing (both within and between studies). The purpose of this study is to systematically review the methodology and parameters of expressive writing intervention studies. A computer literature search was conducted using the PsycINFO and MedLine databases to identify peer reviewed articles of randomized controlled trials of the expressive writing intervention …
The Effects Of Gender Communication Patterns On Opposite Gender Attraction, Robert R. Wright
The Effects Of Gender Communication Patterns On Opposite Gender Attraction, Robert R. Wright
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Female patterns of speech communication including expression of empathy, sharing similar experiences, and asking further questions were compared to typical male patterns of communication in gender attraction. Self-report methods were employed in the administration of the Attractive Communication Styles Survey and the Conversation Survey Questionnaire. With a convenience sample of 164, both survey instruments assessed for differences of attraction between the two conversation styles. Analyses revealed both males and females valuing the typical female pattern of communication, but differed in the intensity of support with females strongly favoring and males slightly favoring the female pattern (6.350(72) = x, p < .01; 13.811(90) = x, p < .01). However, both males and females exhibited statistical differences in all their responses for the female pattern, except when asked which they were attracted to the most romantically (p = .064). Implications for further research on the actual dyadic interaction effects on attraction are supported.
Effects Of Gender And Ethnicity On Adolescent Experiences In Same-Race And Interracial Romantic Relationships, Angela Marie Enno
Effects Of Gender And Ethnicity On Adolescent Experiences In Same-Race And Interracial Romantic Relationships, Angela Marie Enno
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
In recent years, the field of psychology has seen considerable growth in the body of literature on adolescent romantic relationships (e.g., Florsheim, 2003; Furman, Brown, & Feiring, 1999). As this trend continues, the need for a more thorough understanding of the processes that underlie normal relationship development becomes increasingly apparent; particularly in the case of adolescent members of ethnic minority groups, for whom literature on normal development is sparse. The present study sought to gain insight into some of the forces that shape adolescents' experiences of romantic relationships: namely, race/ethnicity and gender. We hypothesized that, like their adult counterparts, adolescent …
Campus Climate: Effect On Ethnic Minority Students' Mental Health Utilization, Laura C. Pruitt
Campus Climate: Effect On Ethnic Minority Students' Mental Health Utilization, Laura C. Pruitt
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
The idea of climate as a construct that could impact the perception of one's environment was introduced by Bernice Sandler and colleagues (1996) with the idea of "chilly climate" as it relates to the inequitable differences between women and men. However this concept has been applied to other populations as well in particular that of ethnic minorities. A chilly climate describes how a person perceives the environment in terms of being welcoming and accepting, or intolerable and chilly. Taken alone any chilly behaviors may have little to no effect however behaviors that are overt and frequent can have a devastating …
Gender Differences In Emotion Regulation, Kristiane Madsen
Gender Differences In Emotion Regulation, Kristiane Madsen
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Emotion regulation is conceptualized as the ability to identify and respond appropriately to emotions. Previous research on gender and emotional expression suggests that female children are socially conditioned to be more expressive, and thus may be more able to regulate emotion with their mothers in relation to their male peers. Participants include 144 mother-child pairs at child age points 14, 24, and 36 months and at Pre-Kindergarten entry who participated in a local Early Head Start Research and Evaluation project. Data consist of videotaped interactions of mothers and infants engaged in a 10 minute free play activity with three bags …

Effects Of The Diagnostic Label "Adhd " On Peer Judgment, Jared Toone
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Diagnostic labels are frequently used with children exhibiting symptoms of learning and behavioral disorders. The effect that such labels have on the labeled children as well as their peers is not completely understood. In the present study, the effects of the label "ADHD" on peer acceptance were examined. Fourth- and fifth-grade boys and girls viewed a video of a peer listening to teacher instruction and working on a worksheet. For half of the participants, the child in the video was labeled as having ADHD, while the other participants were told nothing about the child. After viewing the video, the children …
