From Surviving To Thriving: Sense Of Belonging And Imposter Syndrome In College Students With Ptsd, Amaree Walker
From Surviving To Thriving: Sense Of Belonging And Imposter Syndrome In College Students With Ptsd, Amaree Walker
Honors Theses
This study explored how PTSD affects college students’ sense of belonging and experiences of Imposter Syndrome. Guided by cognitive-behavioral theory, attachment theory, and post-traumatic growth (PTG) theory, the research aimed to identify cognitive and relational experiences in students with PTSD. PTSD correlated with increased sense of belonging and increased feeling of Imposter Syndrome, influenced by cognitive distortions and insecure attachment styles. psychological well-being was revealed as a mediator in each of these relationships. This research sought to understand how trauma impacts potential cognitive and relational shifts in students with PTSD. The findings can inform future interventions targeting PTSD-related challenges for …
Threads Of Time: A Lifespan Perspective On Temporal Simulations, Self-Continuity And Meaning In Life, Jonathan Louis Jie Sheng Chia
Threads Of Time: A Lifespan Perspective On Temporal Simulations, Self-Continuity And Meaning In Life, Jonathan Louis Jie Sheng Chia
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This research investigates how temporal simulations—prospection and retrospection — influence meaning in life (MIL) through the mediating role of self-continuity, and whether these relationships vary with age. Across two studies, self-continuity mediated these associations, but the specific pathways appeared to be nuanced. In Study 1, using a correlational design, frequency of prospection and retrospection positively and negatively predicted MIL via self-continuity respectively. These indirect effects, however, became nonsignificant when accounting for personality and dispositional affect, suggesting the effects of temporal simulation frequency to be primarily driven by these individual differences. Study 2 experimentally manipulated temporal simulations. Prospection enhanced MIL through …
Generative Artificial Intelligence Dependency: Scale Development, Validation, And Its Motivational, Behavioral, And Psychological Correlates, Adalia Yin Hui Goh
Generative Artificial Intelligence Dependency: Scale Development, Validation, And Its Motivational, Behavioral, And Psychological Correlates, Adalia Yin Hui Goh
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The growing integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) into everyday life has raised questions about its potential psychological and behavioral consequences. The present research develops and validates the Generative AI Dependency Scale, a multidimensional tool developed to assess individual differences in dependency on generative AI systems. Across six studies involving 1,223 participants from the United States and Singapore, the Generative AI Dependency Scale demonstrated strong psychometric properties, including a stable three-factor structure (cognitive preoccupation, negative consequences, withdrawal) and good test-retest reliability (ICC = .85). Confirmatory factor analysis supported a higher-order dependency construct, and scalar measurement invariance was established across sex …
Understanding The Impact Of Language Barriers And Visit Duration On Caregiver Satisfaction In Pediatric Primary Care, Gavin Miller
Understanding The Impact Of Language Barriers And Visit Duration On Caregiver Satisfaction In Pediatric Primary Care, Gavin Miller
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
Background: Children from households that speak languages other than English (LOE) face barriers in accessing healthcare, leading to poorer health outcomes. Language barriers contribute to these disparities, often resulting in diminished communication between providers and families. Visit duration may play a key role in facilitating effective communication and improving patient satisfaction.
Purpose: This study examines how language barriers affect caregiver satisfaction in pediatric primary care, and whether visit duration mediates this relationship. We hypothesized that caregivers from LOE households would have comparable visit durations to English-preferring caregivers but report lower satisfaction due to receiving less information within that time. …
Surviving Their Stripes: Quality Of Life And Coping For Individuals With Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Julianna L. Breazeale
Surviving Their Stripes: Quality Of Life And Coping For Individuals With Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Julianna L. Breazeale
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
Hypermobile type Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) is a subtype of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a genetic connective tissue disorder with complexities involving joint hypermobility, tissue fragility and severe pain. Patients with hEDS often experience misdiagnosis, medical dismissal and years of waiting for a diagnosis. This study aims to evaluate the quality of life and diagnostic journey for patients living with hEDS. Qualitative, cross-sectional and semi-structured interviews were conducted in this study using a descriptive, phenomenological methodological approach. The specific phenomenon is the experience of the hEDS diagnosis and how that diagnosis further impacts patient life. The two primary research questions that we aimed …
When 'Weird' Means 'Dangerous': Viruses And Firewalls In Affective Polarization, Nathan J. Locke
When 'Weird' Means 'Dangerous': Viruses And Firewalls In Affective Polarization, Nathan J. Locke
All Theses
As traditional sources of epistemic authority face declining trust, alternative narratives have gained prominence - often leveraging the emotional and cultural resonance of seemingly simple terms. In the 2024 election cycle, the term “weird” emerged as a potent meme in American political discourse. Using a memetic perspective that incorporates elements of framing theory and Social Judgment Theory, this thesis investigates the use and reaction to “weird” and its role in shaping perception of Donald Trump, his political allies, his followers, and his opposition during and immediately after the 2024 Presidential election. The memetic perspective, which views ideas as units of …

A Review Of Studies Assessing Modifiable Risk Factors For Dementia Among Family Caregivers In The United States Based On Behavioral Risk Factorsurveillance System (Brfss), Shruthi Ranjithkumar
2025 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementia (ADRD) face an increased risk of developing dementia due to advanced age and modifiable risk factors. The 2024 Lancet Commission Report identified 14 such risk factors, whose mitigation could reduce dementia cases by 45%. Despite this, research on modifiable dementia risk factors among ADRD caregivers remains limited. This study investigates whether peer-reviewed studies utilizing Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data assess modifiable dementia risk factors among ADRD caregivers. A PubMed search retrieved 27 relevant articles, which were analyzed for risk factors identified by the Lancet Commission, including traumatic brain injury, …
Genetic Influence Of Allelic Variation On The Phenotypic Variability Of Cognitive Outcomes In Individuals With Williams Syndrome., Marinie P. Joseph
Genetic Influence Of Allelic Variation On The Phenotypic Variability Of Cognitive Outcomes In Individuals With Williams Syndrome., Marinie P. Joseph
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Williams syndrome (WS) is caused by a rare microdeletion of 25 – 27 genes on chromosome 7q11.23, characterized by a distinctive cognitive profile with considerable phenotypic heterogeneity. However, the genetic factors underlying this phenotypic variability remain unclear. I explored two genetic mechanisms—parent-of-origin (PoO) effects and genome-wide polygenic variation, as measured by polygenic scores (PGSs)—to elucidate possible influences on cognitive variability in WS. The first study examined PoO effects on cognitive abilities in two overlapping samples of children with WS (N = 211, N = 251). PoO refers to which parental homolog of chromosome 7 contains the WS deletion. Despite …

A First-Generation 4-H Youth Member Intervention Framework To Support Members To Enter, Engage, And Persist In The Program, Jeremy Elliott-Engel, Nicholas A. A Morris
Journal of Youth Development
The First-Generation 4-H Youth Member (FG4-HYM) Intervention Framework is an organizational management perspective for preparing 4-H youth programs that supports the welcoming of youth and families that have no previous experience with the organization. Using the Bronfenbrenner ecological model, we explore the multiple layers of 4-H program management that support the participation of FG4-HYM in the 4-H club program. This framework provides a tool for 4-H professionals to use when assessing their program’s readiness to provide high-quality programming to all audiences, regardless of their families’ previous experience with the organization. This framework represents the foundational requirements that an organization must …
Development Of A High-Level Model Of Remote Work's Psychological Consequences Using A Large International Data Set, Morgan Russell
Development Of A High-Level Model Of Remote Work's Psychological Consequences Using A Large International Data Set, Morgan Russell
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Remote work has proven to be an enduring fixture of the post-pandemic global economy. Despite research on the construct proliferating in recent years, it has not yet coalesced into a unified model of why, and in which contexts, remote work produces favorable or unfavorable outcomes for employees. The present study represents the first attempt to produce such a model, utilizing a global database of over 8 million employee surveys. The findings of the present study suggest that remote work is associated with small increases in job satisfaction, intent to stay and task performance, with the former two relationships mediated by …

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
The usage of personality as a method of behavioral prediction and outcomes of success has grown considerably over the last few decades. This project explores predicting user personality profiles via the Big Five personality index through the integration of advanced natural language processing techniques as well as neural networks. Using a dataset provided by Dr. James W. Pennebaker, participants analyze an image—formally referred to as a thematic apperception test—and write a thorough paragraph describing the details. This free-form text, along with their personality test results, is captured in a structured dataset. Many deep-learning and machine learning models have been used …
To Mitigate Or Adapt? A Construal Level Perspective On Agenda Setting For Climate Action, Shu Tian Ng
To Mitigate Or Adapt? A Construal Level Perspective On Agenda Setting For Climate Action, Shu Tian Ng
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Climate change is no longer a distant threat, but a present crisis—making the question of how we act timelier than whether we act. This research investigates how people evaluate different approaches to climate action—specifically, mitigation (reducing emissions) and adaptation (coping with impacts)—through the lens of the Construal Level Theory (Liberman & Trope, 1998; Trope & Liberman, 2010). Across three studies, I examined how perceptions of desirability and feasibility influence preferences for different climate action strategies. Study 1 found that, to laypeople, mitigation was perceived as more desirable while adaptation was perceived as more feasible. Study 2 attempted to manipulate individuals’ …

Navigating The Tides Of Change: Girls’ Experiences In Scouts Bsa, Alexandra Rush, Olivia Kochis, Beth Belanger, Jennifer Brown Urban, Miriam R. Linver
Journal of Youth Development
On February 1, 2019, Boy Scouts of America officially accepted girls into its signature program (ages 11–18) and changed its name to Scouts BSA. This historic shift provided a novel opportunity for researchers to investigate the experiences of some of the first 13 girls to enter this traditionally all-boy space and examine how participation influenced sense of self and purpose. A qualitative phenomenological approach was adopted to explore girls’ experiences and perceptions and meanings they constructed, using secondary data consisting of 38 transcribed interviews from all 13 girls. Girls ranged in age from 12–18 years old (M = 13.72, SD …
Modeling Buprenorphine Treatment Discontinuation In Opioid Use Disorder – Predictors And Disparities Using Statistical And Machine Learning Approaches, Wanru Guo
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Background: Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) remains a major public health crisis in the U.S., and while buprenorphine is an effective treatment, early discontinuation undermines its impact. Existing statistical and machine learning (ML) models often overlook key social and healthcare-related predictors and fail to capture subgroup disparities, limiting their utility for equitable intervention design. This study addresses these gaps using a nationwide, longitudinal dataset and a two-stage modeling approach focused on disparity identification. Methods: We analyzed buprenorphine treatment episodes for OUD from the IQVIA Pharmetrics Plus database (2006–2023), defining discontinuation as episodes lasting under 180 days. A Cox proportional hazards model …

Examining How Internally And Externally Motivated Individuals Choose When, How, And Why To Confront Racial Prejudice, Kristin Budziak
Examining How Internally And Externally Motivated Individuals Choose When, How, And Why To Confront Racial Prejudice, Kristin Budziak
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Experiencing racism is associated with negative outcomes, including obesity and poor mental health (Berger & Sarnyai, 2015). Therefore, exploring strategies like interpersonal confrontation, which has been shown to reduce prejudice, is essential (Czopp et al., 2006; Paluck & Green, 2009). We examined what more internally (affected by personal values) and externally motivated (affected by social reward) people consider when deciding when confronting racism. White participants (n = 270) viewed hypothetical scenarios with a racist remark or non-racist remark. They decided whether to confront these scenarios and indicated their motivations, reasonings, and methods. Results showed that more internally and externally motivated …
Voluntary Intermittent Access To Combined Alcohol And Nicotine In Mice—Consumption And Withdrawal Effects, Alyssa M. Potts
Voluntary Intermittent Access To Combined Alcohol And Nicotine In Mice—Consumption And Withdrawal Effects, Alyssa M. Potts
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The prevalence of alcohol and nicotine use is widely known, though the co-abuse of the two is often understudied. Studies have shown that nicotine dependence and daily nicotine consumption increase with higher levels of alcohol consumption1. Nicotine use has been shown to decrease the subjective effects of alcohol and increase alcohol craving. Previous studies using the intermittent access (IA) paradigm in C57BL/6J (B6) mice have shown that B6 mice readily increase or escalate consumption of alcohol in this paradigm. Still, there is little information on alcohol and nicotine co-consumption and withdrawal using the IA paradigm. The goal of this study …
Behind Bars, Behind Lies: The Role Of Jailhouse Informants In Juror Decision Making, Anna Pierce
Behind Bars, Behind Lies: The Role Of Jailhouse Informants In Juror Decision Making, Anna Pierce
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Jailhouse informant testimony is a leading cause of wrongful conviction, especially in severe cases (e.g., rape and murder) with severe punishments (Warden, 2005). The current study investigated the impact of multiple jailhouse informants’ testimonies upon juror decisionmaking, especially when providing consistent or inconsistent testimony. Participants (n = 102) read a murder trial summary with two informants - consistent statements, two informants - inconsistent statements, one informant, or no informant. Results indicated that the multipleconsistent condition had significantly higher guilty verdicts and higher perceptions of credibility than all other informant conditions. Inconsistent statements reduced guilty verdicts and perceptions of credibility, yet …
Is There A Limit? Honor Ideology And Perceptions Of Extremely Violent Responses To Threat, Alexandria Elise Archer
Is There A Limit? Honor Ideology And Perceptions Of Extremely Violent Responses To Threat, Alexandria Elise Archer
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Honor ideology revolves around the idea that men must obey strict masculine norms including toughness, bravery, and a lack of showing one’s emotions. These expectations contribute to stigma against mental illness and help seeking behavior due to perceptions that these behaviors are “unmanly”. Research has failed to examine who men who act in an honor consistent way (i.e., aggressive response to threat) but also struggle with mental health issues may be perceived within the framework of honor ideology. For this reason, we explored whether masculine honor ideology predicted differing perceptions of a man with schizophrenia versus a man without mental …
Temperament And Screen Time Into Adulthood, Kareem Barbis
Temperament And Screen Time Into Adulthood, Kareem Barbis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The possible correlation between language skills, temperament, and screen time in adulthood is understudied. It was hypothesized that high effortful control scores and low childhood screentime would corelate with higher cognitive reflection scores and higher language skills. Using a correlational design, 162 participants were studied (M age = 19.17 years old, 80% female, 86% White, 6% Hispanic). Participants completed an adapted version of the Adult Temperament Questionnaire (Evans & Rothbart, 2007), Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT; Fredrick, 2005), the Cognitive Reflection Test 2 (CRT-2; Thompson & Oppenheimer, 2016), Thompson & Oppenheimer, 2016), a childhood screen time questionnaire, a bilingualism questionnaire, and …
A Systematic Literature Review Of Behavior Analysis In Psychiatric Inpatient Settings, Stephanie Henry, Robbie Hanson
A Systematic Literature Review Of Behavior Analysis In Psychiatric Inpatient Settings, Stephanie Henry, Robbie Hanson
Theses
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) may be best known for the treatment of individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities, such as those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, ABA also has a long history of effective outcomes with other populations, such as with individuals who are admitted to inpatient psychiatric facilities (Dougher, 2004; Harvey et al., 2009). In 2018, 187,877 individuals in the United States were reported as receiving treatment for mental health disorders (Lutterman, 2022). Given behavior analysis’ success implementing operant procedures with these populations, an updated review of the literature on the use of behavior analysis within these settings …
Fit To Stay: Understanding The Impact Of Person-Group Fit On Transfer Intentions In College Sports, Marlee Johnson
Fit To Stay: Understanding The Impact Of Person-Group Fit On Transfer Intentions In College Sports, Marlee Johnson
All Theses
NCAA policy changes in 2021 regarding student-athlete transfer and external compensation have brought attention to the issue of turnover in college sports. Organizational psychologists have been studying turnover intentions and psychological antecedents of turnover intentions for years; however, little is known about the psychological variables that lead student-athletes to develop transfer intentions. The aim of this study was to explore the influence of both perceived supplementary and complementary person-group (PG) fit on student-athletes’ transfer intentions. It also examined affective commitment as a mediator between supplementary PG fit and intention to transfer and perceived team performance as a moderator in the …
Meaningfulness As An Avenue To Eudaimonic Well-Being In Remote Workers, Ashley Hofflander
Meaningfulness As An Avenue To Eudaimonic Well-Being In Remote Workers, Ashley Hofflander
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This quantitative study examined the relationship between the perception of meaningful work (MW) and eudaimonic well-being (EW) in remote workers, its predictive capacity, and the mediating roles of autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Using the Work and Meaning Inventory (Steger et al., 2012), the Psychological Well-Being Scale (Ryff, 1989), and the Basic Psychological Needs at Work Scale (Ryan & Deci, 2000), data was collected and analyzed through Pearson correlation, simple regression, and mediation analysis using the PROCESS macro for SPSS. Results revealed a significant positive relationship between MW and EW (r = .56, p < .001), with MW significantly predicting EW (R² = .316, F(1,113) = 52.23, p < .001). Competence was found to mediate this relationship (β = .625, p < .001), while autonomy (β = .481, p = .425) and relatedness (β = .454, p = .274) did not demonstrate significant mediation effects. The study extends Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Model and Self-Determination Theory by emphasizing competence as a key mediator in remote work settings. Practically, the findings highlight the importance of fostering MW through purpose-driven job design and providing remote workers with the necessary training, resources, and feedback to enhance competence and improve well-being.
Who Cares For The Caregivers? How Dance And Movement Can Benefit Caregiving Parents Of Children With Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities: A Literature Review, Haley E. Gilbert
Who Cares For The Caregivers? How Dance And Movement Can Benefit Caregiving Parents Of Children With Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities: A Literature Review, Haley E. Gilbert
Expressive Therapies Theses
Caregiver parents of people with intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD) are not able to care for themselves as often as they should be able to for their own mental and physical wellness due to their caregiving responsibilities that often carry into adulthood. These can lead to anxiety, depression, grief, and dysregulation for the parent. Dance and movement practices have been found to relieve the symptoms of these experiences while helping the child with IDD and the parent connect more, building stronger relationships. This thesis will include a comprehensive literature review of body-based theories such as the Polyvagal Theory (Polyvagal Institute, 2025), Bowlby’s …
Use Cases For Art Therapy Intervention In Clinical Psychedelic Praxis, Kaitlin Maud
Use Cases For Art Therapy Intervention In Clinical Psychedelic Praxis, Kaitlin Maud
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Psychedelic medicine has existed for thousands of years as a traditional, sacred practice and is now in varying stages of legalization for clinical application in the United States. Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy uses specific psychoactive substances to facilitate altered states of consciousness in which clients have access to unconscious material and there is a greater cognitive openness to new perspectives and possibilities. Art Therapy is a modality of psychotherapy with decades of data to support its clinical efficacy in treating mental illness and other chronic conditions. A review of the literature shows a range of use cases for art in the context …
Navigating A Neurotypical World: The Relationship Between Perceptions Of Visible Vs Non-Visible Disabilities And Sense Of Belonging On A College Campus, Caroline Yager
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Disability is defined through social, historical, and functional perspectives, making the disability movement unique in its overall fight for increased acknowledgement, education, and rights (Robinson & Judge, 2017). Distinguishing the differences between visible and non-visible disabilities is important to provide a general understanding of the unique barriers and challenges that people with disabilities face on a daily basis. Both people with visible and non-visible disabilities encounter stigmas and discrimination that impact their employment or education, as well as misconceptions about their capabilities. This study utilized a diverse sample of undergraduate students recruited through the Prolific survey platform to ensure broad …
The Impact Of Bilingualism On Executive Functioning And Mathematical Abilities Throughout Development, Brenna Claire Mehringer
The Impact Of Bilingualism On Executive Functioning And Mathematical Abilities Throughout Development, Brenna Claire Mehringer
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Research suggests that a bilingual advantage is present for domain-general cognitive abilities, such as working memory (López, 2021), leaving it unclear whether an advantage exists for domain-specific abilities (e.g., mathematics abilities). Given the role of working memory and executive functioning in math achievement, this project explored the cognitive effects of bilingualism. It was hypothesized that participants who are bilingual, or who spoke a language other than English at home, would have enhanced performances on working memory and executive functioning tasks. It was further hypothesized that if an executive functioning bilingual advantage existed, then bilinguals would exhibit stronger math abilities. College …
The Identity Of “I’M Sorry”: Perceptions Of Apologies In False Confessions And The Influence Of Suspect Gender, Frances Anna Storgion
The Identity Of “I’M Sorry”: Perceptions Of Apologies In False Confessions And The Influence Of Suspect Gender, Frances Anna Storgion
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Apologies serve as a mediator between victims and wrongdoers to promote forgiveness and enhance moral perceptions, while ostensibly reinforcing the guilt of the offender. These effects are further tempered by the gender of the apologizer. Paradoxically, content analyses show that apologies are not uncommon in false confessions and may reinforce false judgements of guilt. The current experiment aimed to elucidate the role that suspect gender and gender stereotypes of apologies play in shaping observer perceptions of coercion and guilt within confession contexts. This experiment conformed to a 2 (suspect gender: woman vs. man) x 3 (gender expectations of the apology: …
Cognitive And Social Vulnerabilities: Adolescents’ Pragmatic Inferences Of Leniency In Response To Minimization, Madelyn P. Stine
Cognitive And Social Vulnerabilities: Adolescents’ Pragmatic Inferences Of Leniency In Response To Minimization, Madelyn P. Stine
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The current study expands upon Luke and Alceste’s (2020) experiments to explore the effects of minimization via pragmatic implication on adolescents compared to adults in the context of police interrogations. Adolescent and adult participants read a police report and were randomly assigned to one of the four conditions (control, minimization, direct promise, and honesty) to gauge how differing perceived implications of leniency in interrogation tactics impact one’s perceptions of suspect outcomes. Drawing on empirical research on the social and cognitive vulnerabilities of minors (e.g., Bettens & Normile, 2023; Kassin & McNall, 1991; Kostelnik et al., 2006), I hypothesized that adolescents …
