Strategic materials are mostly carried by ships; thus, our economy, and to some extent our national defense, depend on the secure and efficient operation of the maritime transportation industry. Anything which could adversely impact on the continued operation of shipping is a matter of grave concern. Land Use For Timber And Recreation: A Case Study In Victoria, Australia, Lawrence C. Merriam

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

For many years the United States has had major problems in public land use for timber and recreation. Problems in Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area are an example. Australia is a country with Simi !tar concerns. The State Forests of Central Victoria, administered by the Forests Commission, were heavily burned m 1939. They now have regenerated to commercially mature stands, particularly of mountain ash (Eucalyptus regnans F. Muell.). Within 100 kilometers of the 3 million people in Melbourne, the forests are popular recreation sites. This paper reports on a study made for the Forests Commission aimed at the effective integration …

Scientists working with laboratory animals in Britain are made aware forcibly that a serious ethical dilemma surrounds the use of animals in experiments. Certain vociferous sections of the community press the issue on the attention of the general public and media sources tend to propagate views expressed by the most extreme parties, while neglecting coverage of mature, rational opinion. Die Fauna der Mongolischen Volksrepublik war bis zu den 60er Jahren unseres Jahrhunderts fast unbekannt geblieben. Eine Ausnahme ist die Wirbeltierfauna, welche vor allem von russischen Zoologen gründlich erforscht und deren Resultate publiziert wurden. Dagegen hatten wir von den Wirbellosen nur spärliche Angaben in der Literatur, welche teils auf der Sammeltätigkeit russischer Forscher beruhen. Von ungarischer Seite war nur eine Expedition an der Jahrhundertwende (1898) von dem Grafen Eugen ZICHY durchgeführt worden, und während der kurzen Durchreise (3. bis 15. In vor liegendem Beitrag wird die Entwick lung der geobotanischen Forschung über das Gebiet der Mongolischen Volksrepublik dargestellt. Ausgehend von ersten eigen­ ständigen geobotanischen Forschungen sowjetischer Botaniker auf Expeditionen durch die Mongolei in den 20er und 30er Jahren, wurde die pflanzengeograph isch-vegeta­ tionskundliche Erkundung der Mongolei auf sowjetisch-mongolischen Exped itionen der 40er und 50er Jahre weitergeführt.
