This paper presents a case study of how librarians can situate themselves as pedagogical partners by bringing their unique information literacy perspective and expertise to the programmatic assessment process. This report resulted from the Thun Library and the Penn State Berks Composition Program's collaboration to assess the institution’s first-year composition (FYC) course. From previous programmatic assessments of their students’ work, the faculty had a sense that students struggled with source use in their rhetoric but found it difficult to pinpoint students’ exact source issues. In this innovative project, a social sciences librarian partnered with a sociology professor to embed the “Authority is Constructed and Contextual” frame into an upper-division sociology of poverty course. Students in this course participated in an experiential learning project, collaborating with local children on a participatory photo mapping project to document the children’s neighborhood. By working directly with community members in this field experience, the students gained an understanding of the differences between scholarly authority and community authority and what can be learned about poverty from each type of source. The Right To Be Forgotten And Implications On Digital Collections: A Survey Of Arl Member Institutions On Practice And Policy

In the spring of 2017, digital librarians and digital collection managers at Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member institutions were surveyed on practices and policies surrounding takedown requests in openly accessible digital collections. The survey collected basic demographic information surrounding the digital repositories (anonymized) and presented a series of hypothetical scenarios for respondents to consider and reflect upon. The survey received a 25.8% response rate, with many intriguing insights. Survey findings are presented, along with a discussion on future recommendations for work in this area.

Is your library contemplating an international librarian exchange? Such exchanges not only increase participants’ understanding of other cultures, they also challenge participants to look at their own cultures from a new perspective.
Two academic librarians, Yuka Taniguchi from Kobe University1  (Japan) and Barbara Tierney from the University of Central Florida2  discuss their visits to each other’s libraries in 2016-2017 to share information about their respective learning commons and outreach programs. 
 
This article focuses on the lessons learned for each librarian and practical tips on how to accomplish a successful academic library foreign exchange.

Bicycling became hugely popular in the second half of the nineteenth century. At the time, bicycle manufacturing was an important American industry, bicycle racing was one of the most popular spectator sports, and joining a bicycle club was a mark of social distinction. This bicycle craze occurred at the same time as an explosion in the publishing of American periodicals. Bicycle manufacturers invested heavily in newspaper and magazine advertising which spurred the creation of new periodicals. This paper documents more than one hundred bicycling periodicals that were published in the nineteenth century. The bibliographic essay provides historical context for both …

This year’s American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet conference took place on October 24-26 in Denver, CO, and attracted more than 10,000 participants. I was excited to be one of them. My hospital, Providence St. Vincent Medical Center (in Portland, Oregon), received its 5 th Magnet recognition this year and I was invited by our Magnet leadership team to attend the conference and walk with the Providence St. Vincent nurses during the Magnet award celebration parade.

Government agencies collect large amounts of structured and unstructured data. Although these data can be used to improve services as well as policy processes, it is not always clear how to analyze the data and how to glean insights for policy making, especially when the data includes large volumes of unstructured text data. This article reports opinions found in “We the People” petition data using topic modeling and visual analytics.
