This poster session will discuss how a collaborative virtual art exhibit between the Art Department and Library Services showcased distance learners’ work. Virtual art exhibits meet many needs and goals. These exhibits can be free or lower cost than a traditional art exhibit, reach more individuals as all they need is an internet connection, and provide a lower barrier to displaying one’s artwork. At this academic institution, the goals of a virtual art exhibit are the building of students’ portfolios and creating a deeper campus connection with distance learners. Pittsburg State University’s Library Services and the Art Department worked together …

Thinking Outside The Box To Square The Circle: Realigning Library Services With Stakeholder Needs, David Petersen, Rebecca Harrington, Martha Earl
Southern Chapter/Medical Library Association Annual Conference
Objectives: In an age of electronic databases and Google, librarians must find ways to expand library services to meet the needs of patrons who no longer seek some traditional services. How do we identify needs in our organizations that are not being met, and market our abilities to fill those needs while maintaining our identity as librarians?
Methods: With the full support of the library director, whose priority was to update academic and clinical services, newly hired librarians took time to observe the initiatives and goals already established across their respective residency and nursing departments. Despite increased liaison activity, decreasing …

How One Library's Location Change Impacted Health Information Requests: Comparing Zip Codes And Health Disparities To Shape Library Services, David Petersen, Kelsey Grabeel, Cameron Watson
Southern Chapter/Medical Library Association Annual Conference
Objective In 2014, the Preston Medical Library underwent a radical change, moving from an academic office building to the main floor of a regional medical center. While the library previously served the public, health information requests have substantially increased in volume due to the new location. Each health information request is logged with the subject nature and patron contact information. The objective is: to analyze this data to see if our reach has expanded to counties that previously have not used the service, to see which counties request the most health information, and to ascertain whether more requests are from …

Dangerous Liaisons: Brainstorming The 21st Century Academic Liaison, Antje Mays
Library Faculty and Staff Publications
Academic liaison roles have seen massive changes over time and grown into an ever-broadening range of duties. What began as subject-focused collection involvement has evolved into a mix of instruction, reference, and various forms of course-embedded services, all while also retaining the earlier focus on subject-specific collection management.
This paper outlines current research on academic liaison roles and summarizes the interactive exchanges from the 2018 Charleston Conference Lively Session on academic liaisons. Through live polling and discussion, session participants identified key functions and core competencies for liaisons, as well as factors contributing to success or hindrance for liaison success. Beautiful Connector: Collection Showcase Exhibits As Teaching Tools And Community Builders, Antje Mays
Library Faculty and Staff Publications
Libraries’ quest to strengthen connections with their constituencies often finds expression in new services and repurposed user spaces. Some literature portrays libraries as focusing away from collections toward new trends in library portfolios, but showcasing collections can prove very effective in bringing the library and user communities closer together. This article recounts two recent library collection showcase exhibits as successful examples of bolstering stakeholder connections: The first collections exhibit showcased books on Chinese language, literature, culture, art and architecture, history, and medicine received through the Window of Shanghai program. The second collections exhibit showcased scholarly books, U.S. government publications, citizen …

The formation of this committee was in response to a new university-wide program. A pool of more than 80 library personnel made quick and thoughtful decisions to determine the composition of the Committee. In the months that followed, members learned to navigate the challenges of goal setting, collaborating with others outside the library, funding, event planning, and marketing. One of the primary goals of the Committee was to initiate and maintain conversations and collaborations …

Your Ir As The Centerpiece For Scholarly Communications Outreach At Your Institution, Monica Berger
Publications and Research
Getting buy-in and awareness for your institutional repository can be challenging, especially when we have limited time and staff to devote to the IR. Outreach success requires persistence, flexibility, savvy marketing, and a focus on the long view. Before our IR, Academic Works, went live in 2016, my colleagues and I gave talks and workshops on open access and other topics. With Academic Works, our efforts now have focus and coherence. A varied outreach approach has been very helpful. In particular, print marketing has been effective. We designed a poster and other media promoting our tag line “amplify your scholarship …

Contemporary Art And Historical Archives: Collaborations And Convergences In A Digital Multicultural Age, Suzanne S. Lapierre
School of Information Student Research Journal
Literature illuminating the relationship between contemporary art and historical archives around the turn of the twenty-first century and how these interactions inform the evolution of archives in a digital multicultural age is the topic of this review. The literature reveals the extent to which art has been a means for members of marginalized groups to address their representation in historical archives, and also a means for archives to connect with a broader audience. Collaborations between artists and historical archives add new dimension to the debate about the nature of the archive as a creation in and of itself, and in …

Future And Value: The Library As Strategic Partner [Ebug 2019], Antje Mays
Library Presentations
This keynote presentation was based on the 2018 Charleston Library Conference. The session outlined broader economic shifts facing higher education and libraries, then facilitated audience participation vis anonymous live poll at the Ex Libris Bluegrass Users Group (eBUG) annual conference focused on library systems.
Broader economic trends spawn budget pressures for education and libraries, prompting a plethora of studies on the value and relevance of libraries. Numerous reports on economic decline in libraries and studies with mixed pronouncements on the value of libraries have led to a negative self-image within the library profession. Yet libraries' leadership in connecting learners to …

This presentation will explore the findings from the first year of a multi-year study on marketing e-resources at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Librarians at the William H. Hannon Library examined the usage of specific e-resources over the course of …

Creating A Library Orientation Card Game To Reach New Transfer Students, Kelly Giles, Kristen S. Shuyler, Andrew Evans, Jon Reed
Libraries
Librarians and staff at a public university drew upon previous experience with instructional games to develop, implement, and assess a card game as a library orientation activity for new transfer students. This project was shaped by a desire to meet transfer students’ unique needs as well as the logistical constraints associated with the university’s transfer student orientation. The card game, modeled after Apples to Apples, presented information about the campus library system in a fun, informal way that allowed transfer students to socialize with each other while learning. Survey responses indicated that students found the game both enjoyable and …
