The Library Is Our Lab: The Case For Print Books In An Academic Library, Peggy Ellis, Fran Gray Jan 2016

The Library Is Our Lab: The Case For Print Books In An Academic Library, Peggy Ellis, Fran Gray

Western Libraries Presentations

Humanities researchers consider the library to be their laboratory, and its print collections their essential research equipment. In spite of anecdotal evidence that both students and faculty in the Humanities prefer print materials over e-books, academic libraries are allocating a steadily increasing proportion of their acquisitions budgets toward the purchase of e-books across all disciplines.

At Western University in London, Ontario, Peggy Ellis and Fran Gray surveyed Arts & Humanities faculty members and graduate students to gain a better understanding of their attitudes toward e-books. The objectives of our research are three-fold: to determine whether researchers in the Humanities departments …

Reflective Writing And The Research Process, Larissa Gordon, Daniel Schall Jan 2016

Reflective Writing And The Research Process, Larissa Gordon, Daniel Schall

Library Faculty Scholarship

Reflective practices intersect with the growing interest in critical information literacy and the new Framework’s focus on conceptual learning. Composition programs also already engage in reflective practices, so assessing students using these types of assignments can lead to more meaningful faculty/librarian partnerships. This poster discusses a pilot assessment project designed to answer the following questions: Can reflective writing help students think about research as an iterative process that is connected to the writing process? Will that changed thinking improve students’ research and ability to integrate sources into their papers?

Developing A Practical Framework For Information Literacy Program Evaluation, Paul Bracke, Clarence Maybee, Sharon Weiner Jan 2016

Developing A Practical Framework For Information Literacy Program Evaluation, Paul Bracke, Clarence Maybee, Sharon Weiner

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

This presentation was given at the Library Assessment Conference held from October 31–November 2, 2016 in Arlington, VA. The Purdue University Libraries, like many academic libraries, face increased expectations for demonstrating their value and impact. The Libraries launched a project to advance an outcomes-based, mission-centric framework for evaluating its information literacy programing. The methods for developing this framework consist of four steps: 1) focus groups with librarians to gain a more comprehensive understanding of existing assessment practices, 2) analysis of focus group findings, characterizing current assessment practices, 3) a gap analysis, comparing focus group findings to the information literacy mission …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations: Airing The Anxieties & Finding The Facts, Jill Cirasella Jan 2016

Open Access Theses & Dissertations: Airing The Anxieties & Finding The Facts, Jill Cirasella

Publications and Research

Writing a thesis or dissertation is hard, and now that most theses and dissertations are deposited and distributed electronically, graduating students face an additional complication: they must decide whether they want to make their dissertations immediately open access (OA), or, at universities that require OA, they must come to terms with the fact that their work will be OA. In this presentation, I survey and scrutinize the anxieties and myths surrounding OA theses and dissertations.

Informed Learning, Information Literacy, And Scholarly Communication: Library Pedagogy As A Bridge To The Disciplines, Kim L. Ranger

Presentations

The focus of this presentation is to report findings from growing partnerships between faculty whose primary focus is classroom teaching and faculty librarians, revealing connections between our disciplines and co-designing curricula that recognize the commonalities in pedagogy, theories, and professional practice. Information literacy and scholarly communication are combined in teaching and learning lessons, materials, and shared terminology. The presenter will encourage participants to reflect on why and how librarians invite students into the disciplines and to investigate ways of assessing student learning.

Incorporating Etds In The Ir, One Department At A Time, Kristen Hoffman

Kristen Hoffman

How do you add student work to an IR when there is no centralized graduate school? At Seattle Pacific University, each department or school sets their own policy and has their own unique workflow, which has both challenges and benefits. Kristen worked with five individual departments to establish workflow solutions; consider if one of these options may work for you as you incorporate student work.

Better Together Sakai And Sipx-Sakai Virtual Conference.Pptx, Gan Ye, Sally Bryant

Gan Ye (Grace Ye, 叶敢 )

Pepperdine, like the majority of universities, is concerned with the copyright of materials posted on the Sakai site. Instructors have been advised to take appropriate steps to address copyright compliance before they post copyrighted materials to the Sakai system.  However, new technology makes copyright issues more complicated. Usually instructors or library staff search their library licensed content and link the content to the Courses site. Both instructors and library staff need faster and easier ways to manage copyright permissions and to set up course readings.  Tools are needed to help instructors and library staff in determining whether the course materials …

Greater Than The Sum Of Our Parts: Building Support For Oer From Existing Services On Campus, Matt Ruen Dec 2015

Greater Than The Sum Of Our Parts: Building Support For Oer From Existing Services On Campus, Matt Ruen

Matt Ruen

At Grand Valley State University, the Libraries and several campus partners--including campus IT and offices that support faculty research and effective teaching--have come together to provide support for the creation and adoption of Open Educational Resources (OER) on our campus.  But rather than developing brand new programs or asking for additional resources right at the start, we realized that each of our units already offers services that could support faculty creating and using OER.  Through our OER Initiative, we’ve begun coordinating our efforts to promote these services and build relationships with each other and with faculty allies interested in doing …

Personal Librarians Signage For Elevator, Crystal Boyce Dec 2015

Personal Librarians Signage For Elevator, Crystal Boyce

Crystal Boyce

As a faculty we realized that we were missing a key opportunity to "interact" with prospective students and their families while they were on tours with Admissions. Those tours always take families to the fourth floor via elevator, so we maximized our visibility to those families by placing our information directly in front of them. We update the poster regularly as liaison areas change. Approximate finished size is 18*24, file created using PowerPoint.

Digital Preservation, Stephen Klein

Publications and Research

Despite the ease of creation, the web is ephemeral. The fleeting nature of websites present a challenge to repositories when a record needs to be preserved. The Graduate Center Library was recently presented with this challenge with the increase of submissions of online components to dissertations. This presentation focused on the need to capture a snapshot, the limitations of current normative practices and some alternative approaches.

Altmetrics Concepts And Practices, Janice Winkler Dec 2015

Altmetrics Concepts And Practices, Janice Winkler

Western Libraries Presentations

Researchers are often asked to demonstrate their productivity and the impact of their research when they apply for funding, as well as when they go up for promotion and tenure. One of the ways they do this is by using traditional bibliometrics. Librarians, publishers, and institutions are other stakeholders with sometimes widely varying use cases for research impact metrics. Unfortunately, some traditional research impact metrics have been identified as barriers to open access initiatives, including Scholarship@Western.

Altmetrics provide an alternative or complement to traditional metrics. They generally use information available on the web to determine how research output is used …

Open Your Research Without Opening Your Wallet, Janelle L. Wertzberger

Janelle Wertzberger

Open scholarship promotes sharing and collaboration, increases readership, and amplifies impact. It is gaining traction as institutions, professional associations, and funding agencies encourage or require broad sharing of research results. Yet many authors believe that the only way to open their work is to pay publishers thousands of dollars for the privilege. Luckily for us, that just isn’t the case. Come hear about a range of ways to open your research without paying for the privilege! Lunch provided. (Limited seating, RSVP to jwertzbe@gettysburg.edu)

Professional Identity And You: Why Self-Concept Matters In Librarianship, Kevin Tanner Nov 2015

Professional Identity And You: Why Self-Concept Matters In Librarianship, Kevin Tanner

FIMS Presentations

Kevin Tanner addresses the importance of professional identity in librarianship. In the Summer 2015 semester, he completed an independent study on the construction of professional identity of librarians on Twitter through professional development and networking. During this session, he shares the results of that study and give suggestions on how you can begin to find your own professional identity while still retaining your individuality. While there are many stereotypes about librarians, they are not “one-size-fits-all” professionals, and a new modern image of the professional has begun to emerge in the digital age through a thoughtful reflection on identity.

Ensuring Ada Compliance For Library Databases, Shaden Melky, Laura Delancey

Kentucky Convergence Conference

Electronic library content must be accessible to students with disabilities, however many institutions have focused on accessibility of physical facilities without considering the requirements for online information. Western Kentucky University (WKU) developed a required, automated program to audit WKU Libraries’ electronic content including, the website and library database vendors. Additionally, WKU began requesting documentation of accessibility features in the form of a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT). This presentation will focus on both our internal auditing efforts and the challenges of obtaining accurate vendor documentation.
