Podcasts have exploded in the media landscape and have become a mainstream platform for conversation. Through interviews with academic library professionals and leaders, the Librarian Lunch Break podcast provides opportunities for learning and professional development for both ourselves and our listeners. This poster will address the development of a podcast including the initial idea, the preparation, the interview process, and ultimately the deployment and promotion of the finished product. As an outcome of our experience, we will also share principles gleaned from our first season of the podcast, which focused on the landscape of early career librarianship. Although we started …

Ils Migration For A Small Library: Our Experience, Doyin Adenuga, Michael Green
Ils Migration For A Small Library: Our Experience, Doyin Adenuga, Michael Green
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
Over the last decade, many academic libraries have added a discovery layer to their integrated library systems (ILS) in an effort to improve access to information and streamline the users’ search experience. The Willard J. Houghton Library, a small academic library at Houghton College, recently migrated to WMS Discovery and implemented such a discovery layer into its OPAC, along with many other related changes to both the library’s backend and “onstage” functions. Naturally, any ILS migration will cause a variety of changes (and headaches!) for a library, its staff, and its users, but in this case these changes were complicated …

How can an "old space" like Special Collections be repurposed to meet evolving information literacy learning goals? This presentation will address ways in which a traditional library space can be reimagined as a place to engage students in affective learning at the beginning of the research process. By crafting activities for students that emphasize exploration and open-ended discovery, librarians and faculty can help students slow down and approach research more creatively. In the session, we (two librarians and a teaching faculty member) will share specific outcomes, activities, and the results of our assessments. Participants will: Understand the importance of affective …
Queering The Library Of Congress, Carlos R. Fernandez
Queering The Library Of Congress, Carlos R. Fernandez
Works of the FIU Libraries
This poster will attempt to apply the techniques used in Queer Theory to explore library and information science’s use and misuse of library classification systems; and to examine how “queering” these philosophical categories can not only improve libraries, but also help change social constructs.
For millennia, philosophers, such as Plato and Aristotle, have used and expounded upon categories and systems of classification. Their purpose is to make research and the retrieval of information easier. Unfortunately, the rules used to categorize and catalog make information retrieval more challenging for some, due to social constructs such as heteronormality.
The importance of this …

A century has passed since the new technology of the Great War blackened Europe's skies and rumbled slowly across once-fertile farmland. World War I marked the beginning of a new technological era; the old and the new came together as no previous conflict before to decimate parts of Europe. Tanks and the telegraph were replacing more traditional tools like carrier pigeons and draft horses, but the War melded both the old and the new together in ways previously unseen. Besides the battlefield technology used for death and destruction, other new tools were also coming into widespread use. Still- and video-cameras …

Fine-Tuning The User Experience: Integration Of Blackboard And Libguides, Gerald R. Natal
Gerald R Natal
At many institutions, students are required to use the Blackboard online course management system. Often, links are provided to library resources through Blackboard. An extension of this service was developed a few years ago that enabled the delivery of course-related content at the point-of-need by utilizing LibGuides. The desired outcome was that students would have an improved research experience, produce better student work, steer students away from simple, uniformed Google searching to quality databases, and improve usage of library resources. This presentation gives background information on the process and details the steps necessary to implement the integration of these two …
