Visual English: A Method Of Language Education For The Deaf, Adapted For The Esl Classroom, Dennis Sayers

This report details an adaptation for the ESL classroom of the Fitzergerald Key, a method of language education for the deaf which utilizes question words to organize vocabulary development and to visualize the regularities of word order in English. The modified Key is a visual means of silent communication shared between teacher and students which utilizes a board and three kinds of manipulatives: squares marked with question words to indicate the 8 slots of an English transitive sentence; cubes which give common modulators of meaning and frequent pro-forms; and vocabulary cards. In the course of our paper , we will discuss theories of why the problem of the slow language learner exists, what the problem was for our specific situation and how we personally dealt with the problem(s). Realizing that other teachers will not be facing the same physical situation we did, (that of teaching ESL to Greek students at a private Greek high school in Thessaloniki, Greece) we will discuss alternatives concerning physical facilities needed for remedial help. In an attempt to provide a useful reference, resource and idea book for teachers of Spanish, this paper addresses such diverse topics as pronunciation, composition, games, reading, and the functional-notional syllabus in Spanish. Theoretical considerations, practical guidelines, and sample activities are given along with useful examples of proverbs, slang, and other lexical references which will assist the teacher in developing activities to supplement Spanish courses at the beginning and intermediate level.

This paper is intended to serve as a preliminary study for the formation of an elementary school media center designed to serve Chiricahua Apache children. At present time the Chiricahua do not have a home reservation. A lawsuit has been filed to regain their reservation in the southeas.t corner of Arizona which was terminated by executive order in 1877, The Chiricahua people are scattered, with some making their homes on the Mescalero Reservation in New Mexico, the San Carlos Reservation in Arizona, and at Ft. This field study addressed the problem of "actively seeking" out and identifying children (ages 3 to 5 years) likely to develop late learning problems upon school enrollment. The procedures developed and reported in this paper deal with initial public relations, facilities, personnel, an evaluation instrument Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning (DIAL), hearing and vision testing, and reporting of results to parents and school personnel.
The paper also includes means and standard deviations for DIAL subtest scores by one year age groups and by sex, as well as simple and multiple r's for each of the DIAL variables individually …

The following report deals with the career education program at Mountain View, one of six intermediate schools in the Beaverton school District #48.
During the summer of 1974, four Mountain View faculty members developed what they titled the Mountain View Intermediate School Career Educational Resource Guide (CERG).
The faculty members developed this guide keeping in mind the requirements of the Master Plan but also adding specific references relating to what direction they felt the career education program at Mountain View should take.
The CERG was designed in such a way that career related activities for each grade level were broken …
