Heritage Language Learners In The Foreign Language Classroom, Annabel Noar
Heritage Language Learners In The Foreign Language Classroom, Annabel Noar
Journal of Graduate Education Research
Heritage language learners are a heterogenous group themselves, and prevalent contrasts exist between them and foreign language learners. This presents challenges for the amalgamation of heritage language learners and foreign language learners within a single language classroom. Reviewing relevant literature, this paper discusses the differences between heritage language learners and foreign language learners, and how these can be accounted for by educators. It argues that, without specific, individualised differentiation, the foreign language classroom is inappropriate for the heritage language learner due to its inability to sufficiently account for their heterogeneity, diverse backgrounds and unique motivations for language learning. The difficulty …

Cripistemology And Creative Practice: Disability, Aesthetics, Digital Art, Generative Ai, Talan Memmott Phd
CLASP Lecture Series
Dr. Memmott’s presentation will showcase “Introducing Lary”—an ongoing AI project that explores the re-invention of the self following life-changing cancer surgery and treatment. This talk profiles the artist’s experience with a laryngeal cancer diagnosis and the medical interventions that follow. Utilizing a variety of AI platforms for both video and image production along with journal entries and medical reports as text prompts, the resulting work is a set of distinctive media that range, in Dr. Memmott’s words, “from the mythic to the horrific; the historical to the speculative.” Though at times the resulting media may emphasize the emergent body horror …

Associations Of Parental Perceived Health With Child Movement Behaviors Within Two-Parent Households, You Fu, Hayley Almes, Nora Constantino, Doria Schmidt, Ryan D. Burns
International Journal of Physical Activity and Health
This study aimed to examine how perceived parental mental and physical health status was associated with child physical activity, screen time, and sleep. Participants were 6- to 17-year-old minors (N = 20,156; 47.9% female) from the 2022 US National Survey of Children’s Health. Dependent variables were children’s physical activity frequency, screen time, and sleep. Independent variables were parents’ physical and mental health status. Using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model, two adjusted path models were constructed. One for parent mental health associating with parental physical health, another for parent physical health associating with parental mental health–both further associating with child movement behaviors. …

Assessing The Improvement Of Intercultural Competence And The Development Of Civic-Minded Graduates At The University Of Minnesota Morris, Catherine Van Wey
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
In a world where cultures intersect constantly, intercultural competence, the ability to connect and communicate effectively across cultural boundaries, is crucial for driving meaningful change. Fostering global citizenship, the awareness of one’s role in a shared global community, and the commitment to a fairer, more equitable planet are vital for cultivating culturally attuned, civic-minded graduates. This perspective aligns with institutions like the University of Minnesota Morris, a four-year public liberal arts university and COPLAC member, in their shared mission to prepare students as collaborative change-makers within the communities they engage with now and in the future. However, evaluating these skills …

STEM for Success Resources
This study examines the ethical implications of AI in role-playing games (RPGs), focusing on meta-participation, transparency, and algorithmic influence. By exploring AI’s role in shaping narratives and player agency, we analyze ethical concerns such as informed consent, algorithmic control, and cultural inclusivity. Through a systematic literature review and real-world case studies, the research proposes principles for integrating AI ethically into RPGs while preserving their immersive and collaborative essence. This work challenges existing paradigms and invites critical discourse on AI's evolving role in game design.

Creativity As Dialogue: Navigating Change Together, Chantell Cosner
Payne Center for Leadership Development Student Leadership Conference
Breakout Session #2Theoretical physicist David Bohm described group creativity as “thinking together,” linking it to the practice of dialogue. In ambiguous and challenging environments, our connection to each other can help us produce new ideas, engage in creative action, and facilitate innovation. In this session, we will explore the idea of social creativity, its link to dialogue, and how these principles can be applied in our teams at work, school, and home. We will also learn how leaders can play a crucial role in fostering creativity within their teams and communities, even when faced with the unknown.

Breakout Session #2I propose the idea of crushing your inner critic and embracing your inner mentor to live a more full and hopeful life. I will present in a workshop style with activities to open people's eyes to the critic. My goal is to help people understand how much our critics can control our lives and how sometimes we haven't met our mentor. I recently took a weekend class that presented this idea, and it provoked a lot of change in me and how I approach my life now.

Liberating The Whole Self Through Leadership, Abby Morioka, Stefanie Marlow, Nick Peralta
Payne Center for Leadership Development Student Leadership Conference
Breakout Session #1Liberation is the freedom from limits, thoughts, and/or behaviors that would keep us stuck or imprisoned. The work of leadership is the act of looking to the needs of others that you lead by fighting for their good and well-being. The starting point of this leadership style focuses on freeing ourselves from thoughts, limits, and/or behaviors that keep us stuck. Liberating leadership is the act of bridging a gap between personal change and systematic change through authentically showing up powerfully and consistently for yourself and others.

Wellness For Student Leaders: Peer Health Educators’ Approach To The Eight Dimensions Of Well-Being, Katie Warnke, Amelia Stabler, Zia Meyers
Payne Center for Leadership Development Student Leadership Conference
Breakout Session #1Student leaders play an important role in holding conversations around health and wellness on a college campus. Knowing about the Eight Dimensions of Well-Being—social, environmental, spiritual, financial, physical, emotional, intellectual, and occupational—and understanding how they impact people that leaders serve is imperative. It is also critical that student leaders are informed about these eight dimensions for endorsing their own wellness. Supporting and leading others can be a daunting task that demands a lot of people, especially student leaders. Peer Health Educators encourage student leaders to invest in strategies to develop self-care and resiliency. Informed student leaders take …

Exploring Faculty And Academic Advisors’ Experiences Supporting College Students With Mental Health Challenges: A Qualitative Study Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Shantalea Johns
Social Work Faculty Publications
This interpretive phenomenological study explores faculty and academic advisors’ experiences in supporting students with mental health challenges. Guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior, which suggests that personal beliefs, prior experiences, and familiarity with symptoms influence behavior, the study examines participant narratives to identify key factors that shape their approaches to supporting students. Findings indicate that personal beliefs about mental health, prior experiences with individuals facing mental health challenges, and campus-based mental health training opportunities all significantly enhance mental health support mechanisms for students outside traditional counseling settings. The ability of faculty and academic advisors to recognize signs of mental …

Knowledge loss is a common challenge within IHEs—highly educated and skilled individuals leave—often taking the knowledge to do their job well with them. Turnover in IHEs is currently at an all-time high. There is a strong correlation between knowledge management practices and organizational performance. This paper (in progress) explores this phenomenon using collaborative institutional ethnography, enabling a critical analysis of how power dynamics and uncertainty shape both individual experiences and broader workplace social structures. Participants include six IHE employees (in various IHE roles) from three separate universities in the eastern region of Texas. We aim to uncover the internal experiences …

Lowell Stewart Hardin (1917–2015), an Indiana farm boy who became an enormously influential international agriculturalist, made the world a better place for the poor and the hungry on this earth. For seventeen years he led the Ford Foundation’s agricultural development efforts, contributing to the Green Revolution. He helped to found and guide international agriculture research centers in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. He inspired others to get involved and opened doors for them. He taught by example, gave others credit, and always stepped back, avoiding the limelight himself. In this volume, twenty-two people who knew him well share stories of …

Reenvisioning Identities That Precede Us: “Body Acknowledgement” As Social Justice Practice Within A Communication Ethics Course Redesign, Wendy Kz Anderson, Ollivia Webster, Nicole Yang, Cass Bryant, Taylor Herr
Feminist Pedagogy
We infuse this conversation of “body neutrality” through social justice responsiveness (compassion, equity, and accountability of body/presence privilege) by specifically attending to intersections of race, gender, and body mindset built into our identities. In reimagining the term “body-neutrality” through identity engagement, we introduce the term “body acknowledgment” as an active interpretative state. As a co-authored pedagogical “co-conspiring” for racial justice (Houdek and Ore, 2021, p. 92), we (instructor, teaching assistants, and previous students) offered a course redesign centering social justice strategies to address the following question: How can dialogue about intersectional communication work toward redesigning learning with difference and develop …
Short-Run Economic Effects Of Michigan's State-Funded Preschool Programs, Timothy J. Bartik
Short-Run Economic Effects Of Michigan's State-Funded Preschool Programs, Timothy J. Bartik
Upjohn Institute Policy Papers
This policy paper estimates the short-run economic effects of the Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP), Michigan’s state-funded preschool program for 4-year-olds. The paper considers 15year effects on state residents’ per capita incomes due to impacts on employment rates and real wages, as well as cost-savings from free preschool and fiscal benefits due to tax base expansion. These 15-year effects ignore the program’s outcomes for child participants and focus on how the Michigan economy is affected by GSRP’s direct impacts on parents and preschool teachers. The estimates use a regional econometric model of a state’s economy, developed originally to evaluate economic …

Queering ‘Common Sense’: Using Critical Discourse Analysis Of Lgbtq+ Book Bans In Florida Public Schools To Unmask Heteronormativity, Talia Zito, Nicole E. Morse
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
Historically, censorship of LGBTQ+ content in education has been rooted in socio-political efforts to marginalize non-heteronormative identities. However, even those who oppose censorship tend to frame their arguments around concepts like “age-appropriateness” and “protecting children.” Our Critical Discourse Analysis examines formal challenges to And Tango Makes Three in one Florida school district in 2022 to show how these concepts are deployed on both sides of the debate. The book, depicting a same-sex penguin couple raising a chick, faced objections under Florida’s HB 1557, a law designed to restrict discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools. Ultimately, the picture …
