A serious problem in the United States is the increasing number of bankruptcies filed each year. The number of bankruptcies in the last decade alone tripled. In 1956, there were 68,086 bankruptcies, and in 1966, the number reached a new record of 192,354.1 This increase, however, is not attributed to business failures, but to the rise in consumer bankruptcies; that is, individuals and families who seek alleviation from their financial distress in the courtroom. Since 1950, more than three-fourths of all bankruptcies filed in the United States District Courts have been consumer types. Presently they constitute over ninety percent of …

One of the important peculiarities of information is that it is expensive to produce but cheap to reproduce. How does a price system react to this phenomenon? One reaction will be to avoid the production of information altogether. Alternatively, firms may decide to keep their information to themselves. In other cases the price system breaks down into imperfect competition. All three of these laissez-faire reactions are inefficient and it may be argued that it is desirable to impose social controls like a patent system or government control on the market for information. Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages
The Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) is a comprehensive program that compiles data on employment and wages for workers covered by state unemployment insurance laws and Unemployment Compensation for Federal Employees (UCFE). It provides a virtual census of nonagricultural employees and their wages, along with data on agricultural industries. The QCEW program is a cooperative effort between the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and state employment security agencies.

The report characterizes Union County as a predominantly ranching region whose prosperity depended heavily on cattle production, weather conditions, and agricultural markets. Despite relatively high per-capita incomes compared with many New Mexico counties, the county faced persistent challenges including population decline, limited industrial diversification, and shrinking employment opportunities.

The report emphasizes that agriculture, especially cattle ranching, formed the foundation of the county economy. More than two-thirds of all farms in 1960 were livestock ranches, one of the highest proportions in New Mexico. Ranching generated the overwhelming majority of agricultural income, while crop production primarily consisted of feed crops such as sorghum, hay, wheat, and corn. Long-term trends showed a decline in farm numbers but substantial increases in average ranch size as smaller agricultural operations consolidated into larger units.

The article was published as a response to contemporary debates over land-grant rights and the claims advanced by the Alianza Federal de Mercedes during the 1960s. It argues that many land-grant disputes predated U.S. control of New Mexico and originated in Spanish colonial legal practices, administrative irregularities, inheritance customs, and economic conditions rather than solely from actions taken by Anglo-Americans after 1846.
