There is limited treatment of the optimal protection of assets against casualty or liability loss. The problem of optimal insurance coverage is formally similar to the problem of optimal inventory stockage under uncertainty. If casualty or liability loss (demand) is less than the insurance coverage (inventory level), excessive insurance cost (inventory holding cost) is incurred. If casualty or liability loss (demand) is greater than the insurance coverage (inventory level), one must absorb the cost of the unrecoverable loss (sales loss). These two components of loss must be balanced in determining optimal insurance (inventory) levels.

Application Of Marginal Economic Analysis To Reservoir Recreation Planning, John Ellis Sirles Iii, L. Douglas James

KWRRI Research Reports

Recreation visitation and cost data at three reservoirs in the Ohio River Valley (Rough River, Dewey, and Winton Woods) were analyzed in an attempt to derive a method by which the optimum level of reservoir recreation development could be determined by marginal economic analysis.

The visitation data were used to determine factors expressing the time distribution of facility use, capacity coefficients, and realized benefits. The cost data were used to estimate annual cost, and marginal cost as functions of annual visitation. Marginal cost and marginal benefit data were combined to find the optimum size.

Since 1925 Mormon missionaries have proselyted in Catholic Argentina. Yet the Argentine mission has grown very slowly and encountered many difficulties. Did the missionaries' North American image affect the missionary work? Did the predominance of the Catholic Church stunt the growth of the new sect? How did the impact of bitter U.S.-Argentine international relations during the Second World War, and the advent of Peron affect the reception of Mormonism in Argentina?

In an earlier paper on the equivalence of tariffs and quotas [1], I argued that this equivalence – defined such that a tariff would lead to a level of imports which, if alternatively set as a quota, would generate the same implicit tariff – followed from the assumptions of competitive domestic production, supply of imports, and holding of quotas. This universality of competitiveness sufficed to guarantee equivalence, as defined. It was further argued that a departure from these assumptions could, in general, destroy this equivalence and several such departures were analyzed: (1) perfect competition in domestic production replaced by pure …
