Rigid Pricing Policies And Profit Maximization, John Heineke

Economics

In this paper we present a model of a profit maximizing firm in which one price is set for the entire multiperiod planning horizon. One of the consequences of such a pricing policy, if one employs widely used assumptions about demand and cost functions, is a decision rule for choosing the optimal price which may be interpreted as the "full -cost" pricing equation of much recent controversy. The significance of this result lies in the fact that full-cost pricing and profit maximization have often been held to be inconsistent. In a recent paper in this Review, J. Bhagwati and T. N. Srinivasan investigated the question of optimal policies required to attain non-economic objectives like ensuring minimum production and employment levels in particular industries as well as preventing excess importation and consumption of some goods. The framework of Bhagwati Srinivasan's analysis is the traditional trade model. In this note we consider three alternative models which allow for inter-industry linkages, the use of imported intermediate goods and non-traded goods. One of the most controversial economic issues confronting the American public during the nineteenth century was that of protection. The plea for a protective tariff had been raised as soon as the First Congress met in 1789. The issue was sharply debated off and on throughout the nineteenth century but never finally resolved. There is now a large literature relating the outcome of this issue to the economic and political interests of various involved groups.

Production, Price, And Inventory Theory, George A. Hay

This paper is an attempt to derive empirically testable hypotheses regarding the principal determinants of firms' decisions on production, price, and finished goods inventory. The general approach to the problem is that many of the same factors which affect the optimal value for one variable will also influence decisions on the other two, and that a "proper" model must take into account the interdependence of these variables and the simultaneous nature of the decisions involving them. This is in contrast to literature on the theory of inventories (see Paul Darling and Michael Lovell) in which the firm is assumed to …
