The Contrast Between Government Planning And Business Planning: Market Orientation Versus Centralized Control, Murray L. Weidenbaum Feb 1976

The Contrast Between Government Planning And Business Planning: Market Orientation Versus Centralized Control, Murray L. Weidenbaum

Murray Weidenbaum Publications

Government planning is a centralized process in which economic decisions are made in the form of governmental edicts; business planning is a decentralized process where the individual consumer makes choices. The author states that adopting a form of centralized planning could result in society moving away from market freedoms and toward greater governmental controls over individual behavior.

Economic Imperialism And Oligopolization Of Trade In The Gold Coast: 1886-1939, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann Jan 1976

Economic Imperialism And Oligopolization Of Trade In The Gold Coast: 1886-1939, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann

Political Science Faculty Publications

This article will deal with the mechanisms of the economic takeover of the Gold Coast, between approximately 1885 and 1939. Two aspects of the takeover are dealt with: the progressive oligopolization of trading, shipping, and banking in the colony, and the influence which oligopolistic British firms exerted on government policy. The oligopolization resulted in the underdevelopment of the African trading class and its inability to develop into a genuine capitalist class; while the pursuance of a government policy dedicated to maintaining Ghana's role as a peripheral import-export economy resulted in the internal economic underdevelopment of the colony.

Comparative Analysis Of Hospital Utilization In Urban And Rural Counties, James R. Dingels Jan 1976

Comparative Analysis Of Hospital Utilization In Urban And Rural Counties, James R. Dingels

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Hospital utilization, when measured as patient days per population, exhibited generally insignificant relationships with factors concerning population characteristics, hospital resources, financial assistance, and degree of urbanization. Adjusted multivariate linear regression results indicated that number of physicians per population did possess significant effects, while other independent variables remained significant. Additional research, as well as refinement of present data, appear paramount to further validation procedures.

Here Is Where We Are, M. H. Baker Jan 1976

Here Is Where We Are, M. H. Baker

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Industrial chemistry in the Upper Midwest consists principally of compounding, formulating and specialty manufacturing rather than the production of basic chemicals. The economic position of industrial chemistry is, nevertheless, significant because many of the region's major corporations are employers of technically-trained personnel and are substantial chemical users. This paper provides a non-quantitative overview of chemical technology applications and developments in some of the area's key industries as a record of the past, a measure of current activity, and as a possible indicator for the future. The paper also notes that the large investment demands, complexity of regulations and distance from …

On The Measurement Of Capital-Intensity, David Lim Jan 1976

On The Measurement Of Capital-Intensity, David Lim

Support & Other Units (THEi)

The problem of the choice of technique in less developed countries has featured prominently in the literature on economic develop- ment I. This paper shows that despite such interest attempts to measure capital-intensity still leave much to be desired and argues that a modified capital-labour ratio, with capital adjusted for utilization and labour to refer to the number of production workers on the biggest shift, is the theoretically most suitable measure of capital-intensity...
