The Private Sector And Nigeria's Agricultural Development By Adeniyi Osuntogun And Rex Uzo Ugorji (Eds.): Book Review, Grace O. Evbuomwan

Economic and Financial Review

This book is a collection of twenty-six (26) papers presented at the First National Seminar on "The Role of the Private Sector in Nigerian Agriculture", organised by the Agricultural and Rural Management Training Institute, Ilorin in October, 1983. This book can be said to be a very useful volume. This is because it contains information which will be useful to both the public and private sectors particularly at this critical period of renewed emphasis on agricultural development and efforts by government to get the private sector to be more involved in the development of the agricultural sector. Book Details: Osuntogun, …

Towards A Unified Asymptotic Theory For Autoregression, Peter C.B. Phillips Feb 1986

Towards A Unified Asymptotic Theory For Autoregression, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper develops an asymptotic theory for a first order autoregression with a root near unity. Deviations from the unit root theory are measured through a noncentrality parameter c . When c < 0 we have a local alternative that is stationary and when c > 0 the local alternative is explosive. As c approaches the limits of its domain of definition (±∞) it is shown that the asymptotic distributions known to apply under fixed stationary and explosive alternatives are obtained as special cases. Moreover, when c = 0 we have the standard unit root theory. Thus, the asymptotic theory that we present goes a long way towards unifying earlier theory for these individual …

Towards A Unified Asymptotic Theory For Autoregression, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper develops an asymptotic theory for a first order autoregression with a root near unity. Deviations from the unit root theory are measured through a noncentrality parameter. When this parameter is negative we have a local alternative that is stationary; when it is positive, the local alternative is explosive; and when it is zero we have the standard unit root theory. Our asymptotic theory accommodates these alternatives and helps to unify earlier theory in which the unit root case appears as a singularity of the asymptotics. The general theory is expressed in terms of functionals of a simple diffusion …

The Share Economy: A Symposium, William D. Nordhaus, Andrew John Feb 1986

The Share Economy: A Symposium, William D. Nordhaus, Andrew John

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In June 1985, the Yale Economics Department sponsored a half-day conference on Martin Weitzman’s striking proposal that sharing would be introduced into compensation arrangements. His suggestions have received wide attention in the popular press and from economists, but the organizers believed that the suggestions were sufficiently novel and promising to warrant careful scrutiny from a wide range of points of view. The conference participants therefore examined the “share economy” from the vantage point of labor economics, capital theory, general equilibrium theory, and macroeconomics.

Exchange Rates And Real Long-Term Interest-Rate Differentials: Evidence For Eighteen Oecd Countries, D. T. Coe, Stephen S. Golub Feb 1986

Exchange Rates And Real Long-Term Interest-Rate Differentials: Evidence For Eighteen Oecd Countries, D. T. Coe, Stephen S. Golub

Economics Faculty Works

The bivariate relationship between real exchange rates and the real long-term interest rate differential has been investigated in a number of recent studies. By exchange-rate-equation standards, this specification does a relatively good job of tracking the historical movements in the dollar-Deutschemark and the dollar-yen bilateral exchange rates, and the dollar effective exchange rate; but does a poor job for the dollar-sterling rate. This paper extends the analysis to 18 OECD countries, in bilateral as well as effective terms. Results from earlier studies are confirmed, but in general the estimation results are sufficiently mixed to suggest that the absence of any …

New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority Survey, University Of New Mexico Bureau Of Business And Economic Research Feb 1986

New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority Survey, University Of New Mexico Bureau Of Business And Economic Research

BBER Publications

This report compiles empirical residential sales price data from New Mexico land title companies and regional boards of realtors to identify regional real estate valuation trends between September 1984 and August 1985. Prepared by the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at the University of New Mexico, the study reveals that home purchase values in multiple regional markets significantly outpaced baseline federal averages. These data establish an aggregate residential baseline to support formal requests to the Internal Revenue Service to raise the maximum purchase price ceilings allowed for first-time home buyers across the state.

Labor Supply Response To Welfare Programs: A Dynamic Analysis, David M. Blau, Philip K. Robins Jan 1986

Labor Supply Response To Welfare Programs: A Dynamic Analysis, David M. Blau, Philip K. Robins

Economics Articles and Papers

Previous static analyses of the work disincentive effects of welfare programs are extended to a dynamic context. Using a sample of continuous longitudinal labor market histories, estimates are derived for welfare-nonwelfare differences in labor market flows among the states of employment, unemployment, and nonparticipation. The estimates are used to identify the main sources of the lower employment and labor force participation rates and higher unemployment rate of welfare recipients. The findings indicate that welfare programs have substantial effects on virtually every labor market transition examined but that the primary source of the static work disincentive effect is slower entry into …

Gatt Ministerial Meeting Punta Del Este, Uruguay, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1986

Gatt Ministerial Meeting Punta Del Este, Uruguay, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

Mr. Chairman, fellow delegates, this week GATT faces an historic challenge. Our task is more difficult than any that has confronted world trade since the very creation of GATT in 1947. What we do in Punta del Este will determine whether GATT remains a functional, dynamic institution serving the interests of its members or declines into a static and passive association that is irrelevant to the needs of international trade.

Government Policy And The Decline In U.S. Trade Competitiveness, Sven W. Arndt Jan 1986

Government Policy And The Decline In U.S. Trade Competitiveness, Sven W. Arndt

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

This chapter examines recent developments in the U.S. competitive position from both economywide and sector-specific perspectives. At the former level, competitiveness may be measured by comparing the average of domestic prices or costs with those abroad, after allowing for changes in exchange rates; while at the disaggregated level, the price and cost comparisons are carried out with respect to sectors, industries, and products.

Private Sector Shrinkage And The Growth Of Industrialized Economies, Michael L. Marlow Jan 1986

Private Sector Shrinkage And The Growth Of Industrialized Economies, Michael L. Marlow

Economics

Industrialized nations have experienced growing public sectors over this century. Measured as a share of total product, growing absorptions of resources by governments have altered the private-public sector mixes of industrialized economies. As displayed in Table 1, the average level of the public sector's share of gross domestic product (GDP) has risen from .32 to .40 over 1960 to 1980, respectively. Much of public sector growth stems from a rapid acceleration in public outlays on social expenditure: The average ratio of social expenditure to GDP has risen from .14 to .24 over the same period.

Growth And Debt: Mexico And The United States In The Medium Term, Sven W. Arndt, Donald R. Lessard, Clark W. Reynolds Jan 1986

Growth And Debt: Mexico And The United States In The Medium Term, Sven W. Arndt, Donald R. Lessard, Clark W. Reynolds

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Mexico and the United States are at an historic crossroad. Earthquake, oil prices, and domestic inflation have dramatically worsened Mexico's economic situation in the past year, more than offsetting the beneficial effects of lower international interest rates. Trade, financial, and employment relations between the two countries are threatened at the very time when their economic and social interdependence is growing. While temporary relief has been gained from recent agreements with the IMF, World Bank, and other international institutions, condition on commercial bank acceptance, even if all the terms are met much remains to be done.
