Ultimate Sources Of Aggregate Variability, Robert J. Shiller Jan 1987

Ultimate Sources Of Aggregate Variability, Robert J. Shiller

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

What, ultimately, is different from quarter to quarter or year to year that accounts for the fact that macroeconomic variables change over these intervals? That is, which are the biggest ultimate sources, in terms we may say of tastes, technology, endowments, government policy, industrial organization, labor-management relations, speculative behavior, or the like, that change to cause this variability? There are a bewildering variety of claims in the literature for such ultimate sources. Far fewer efforts have been made to give a breakdown of the variance of macroeconomic aggregates by Pigou (1929) and Fair (1987). The nature of the evidence for …

Optimal Choice Of Monetary Policy Instruments In A Macroeconometric Model, Ray C. Fair Jan 1987

Optimal Choice Of Monetary Policy Instruments In A Macroeconometric Model, Ray C. Fair

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

It has been nearly twenty years since Poole (1970) wrote his classic article on the optimal choice of monetary policy instruments in a stochastic IS-LM model. Poole assumed that the monetary authority (henceforth called the Fed) can control the interest rate or the money supply exactly. These are the two “instruments” of monetary policy. If the aim is to minimize the squared deviation of real output from its target value, Poole showed that the choice of the optimal instrument depends on the variance of the error term in the IS function, the variance of the error term in the LM …

Statistical Inference In Regressions With Integrated Processes: Part 2, Joon Y. Park, Peter C.B. Phillips Jan 1987

Statistical Inference In Regressions With Integrated Processes: Part 2, Joon Y. Park, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper continues the theoretical investigation of Park and Phillips [7]. We develop an asymptotic theory of regression for multivariate linear models that accommodates integrated processes of different orders, nonzero means, drifts, time trends and cointegrated regressors. The framework of analysis is general but has a common architecture that helps to simplify and codify what would otherwise be a myriad of isolated results. A good deal of earlier research by the authors and by others comes within the new framework. Special models of some importance are considered in detail, such as VAR systems with multiple lags and cointegrated variants.

Conditional And Unconditional Statistical Independence, Peter C.B. Phillips Jan 1987

Conditional And Unconditional Statistical Independence, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Conditional independence almost everywhere in the space of the conditioning variates does not imply unconditional independence, although it may well imply unconditional independence of certain functions of the variables. An example that is important in linear regression theory is discussed in detail. This involves orthogonal projections on random linear manifolds, which are conditionally independent but not unconditionally independent under normality. Necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained under which conditional independence does imply unconditional independence.

Feeding Behaviour Of Live Sheep During Export, C L. Mcdonald Jan 1987

Feeding Behaviour Of Live Sheep During Export, C L. Mcdonald

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Live sheep exporters in Western Australia often hold as many as 00 000 sheep in assembly feedlots while the consignment is being purchased and assembled before shipment. During the assembly phase the sheep ane introduced to the pelleted rations used on board.

Industry reports have highlighted the wide variability in condidtions, facilities and procedures used, and showed that there was little evidence from which to make recommendations to the live sheep shipping indudtry. This article discusses ten experiments by the Department of Agriculture from 1981 to 1985 designed to investigate what influences the feeding behaviour of Merino wethers under conditions …

Devaluation, Short-Run Supply Response, And The J-Curve, Alexander L. Brown Jan 1987

Devaluation, Short-Run Supply Response, And The J-Curve, Alexander L. Brown

Honors Papers

This paper will attempt to empirically illustrate the contribution of short-run supply adjustment to the U.S. J-curve. I plan to study, on the major industry division level (2 digit SIC), 15 manufacturing sectors of the united states. Their supply movements will be calculated in terms of total short-run adjustment. These statistics will then be compared to the trade balance (J-curve) for the U.S. to see if the supply movements of U.S. manufacturers can explain the continued drop in U.S. international trade. If the theory is supported few industries will adjust quickly in the short-run, reflecting the slow adjustment of aggregate …

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Airline Deregulation Upon The Demand For Intercity Bus Service, Daniel G. Greenberg Jan 1987

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Airline Deregulation Upon The Demand For Intercity Bus Service, Daniel G. Greenberg

Honors Papers

This brief excerpt, although not particularly fascinating in its revelation, is exemplary of a far more complex aspect of modern American economic policy. During the 1930's, American regulatory fervor was at its peak. Fear of a repeated economic upheaval, like that of 1929, compounded with the exorbitant profits earned by the robber barons spawned government intervention. Consequently, regulation was imposed upon numerous industries, including air and bus transport.

Four decades later restrictions have been lifted not only in the airline industry but in the intercity bus industry as well. These changes are part of the new laissez faire govermnent of …

The Sensitivity Of Brazil's Balance Of Payments And Foreign Debt To Future Changes In World Economic Conditions: 1987-1991, David Rostov Jan 1987

The Sensitivity Of Brazil's Balance Of Payments And Foreign Debt To Future Changes In World Economic Conditions: 1987-1991, David Rostov

Honors Papers

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the sensitivity of Brazil's balance of payments (including its foreign debt) to future changes in world economic conditions. To accomplish this, the determinants of the country's balance of payments will be isolated and then empirically studied. Based upon these results, forecasts will be made under three different economic scenarios. The intent will be to determine the affect that different sets of world conditions have upon Brazil's foreign debt and trade balance from 1987 to 1991.

The hypothesis of this study is that continued industrial country growth, coupled with low world interest rates, will …

Puerto Rico: Colonialism Revisited, Sherrie Baver Jan 1987

Puerto Rico: Colonialism Revisited, Sherrie Baver

Publications and Research

Because Puerto Rico is not systematically consulted on issues central to its development and because this situation has become so obvious to all island officials during the last decade, elites across the entire Puerto Rican political spectrum felt pressured to ""come out of the colonial closet," tentatively in August 1977 and forthrightly in 1978.3 Every summer since, spokespersons from all political parties have gone before the UN Decolonization Committee to protest the status quo in Puerto Rico. Before 1977, only Puerto Rican Independentistas (who win only a small percentage in island elections), Cuba, and the Soviet Union had labeled Puerto …

Social Security, Savings, And Labor Supply Of The Elderly In Japan, Tetsuji Yamada Jan 1987

Social Security, Savings, And Labor Supply Of The Elderly In Japan, Tetsuji Yamada

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The study examines the controversial, inconsistent empirical results of the effect of social security on personal savings and analyzes the interdependency in the context of social security between the personal savings and labor supply behavior of elderly workers.

Very few studies in this field have been done, and it has not theoretically and empirically been accomplished yet in Japan. Time-series data are used for 1946-1982, and the methods of technique are ordinary least squares and a simultaneous-equation model in the life cycle framework.

The study finds that social security affects personal savings and that the benefit effect dominates the retirement …

Permanent Disability Benefits In Workers' Compensation, Monroe Berkowitz, John F. Burton

Upjohn Press

Berkowitz and Burton provide a detailed examination of the adequacy and equity of permanent partial disability benefits, and the efficiency of the system delivering those benefits. A ten-state study is presented that examines states' criteria for awarding scheduled and nonscheduled benefits. Three of those states are then used for a wage-loss study illustrating the relationship among workers' disability ratings, the workers' WC benefits, and losses of earnings caused by work-related injuries.
