Nominal Income Targeting With The Monetary Base As Instrument: An Evaluation Of Mccallum's Rule, Gregory Hess, David H. Small, Flint Brayton

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

In this paper, we explore McCallum's monetary base instrument rule in the context of several models. The first section uses two models, previously utilized by McCallum, to demonstrate the general properties of his rule and to update through 1992 the empirical support for the rule. The second section uses models that allow a significant role for interest rates in transmitting the effects of changes in the monetary base to aggregate demand. The analysis in these two sections makes two main points: (1) Shifts. or instabilities, in the structural relationship between the base and nominal GNP in the 1980s and 1990s …

Statement By Former U. S. Trade Representative Clayton Yeutter, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1993

Statement By Former U. S. Trade Representative Clayton Yeutter, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

When the Uruguay Round was launched in 1986, those of us who were present expected it to be completed in four years. Regrettably it took seven. The delay reflects the turmoil and disruptions of a global recession, termination of the Cold War, and political turnover among some of the major trading nations. But persistence paid off, this very ambitious Round is now successfully concluded, and the world will be better off for it.

A Two Part Analysis Of The Current State Of The U. S. Airline Industry, Thomas R. Finkel

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Over the past few years, namely 1990-1993, the United States airline industry has lost recorded large losses. This paper examines this situation of the industry. It asks if the business cycle or industry evolution is the cause of the current negative financial situation of the industry. The first third of the paper covers the history of airline regulation and deregulation. The second third covers an examination of the industry's performance during recessionary periods in regulated and deregulated years, using profit and passenger enplanement data. The final third looks at the industry and places it in the framework of an industry …

Afghanistan's Economic Prospects After Soviet Occupation And Jihad (Islamic Armed Struggle), 1979-1993, Abdul Haq Amiri Jan 1993

Afghanistan's Economic Prospects After Soviet Occupation And Jihad (Islamic Armed Struggle), 1979-1993, Abdul Haq Amiri

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The main purpose of this thesis is to evaluate Afghanistan's future economic prospects especially in the aftermath of Russian occupation and the prolonged Islamist armed resistance by the peoples of Afghanistan. To achieve this goal, it is, however, necessary to provide some historical background about the country and to review the nation's economic progress before the onset of the Russian war (1979-1989) . While the presentation of this thesis has a historical dimension, it investigates and evaluates the consequences of communist rule and Soviet occupation. The thesis contains several parts including a conclusion and a policy recommendation. However, the problems …

Teacher Gender And Pay Effects On Ohio Student Performance, Robert Clark Gibson Jan 1993

Teacher Gender And Pay Effects On Ohio Student Performance, Robert Clark Gibson

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This investigation attempts to see if Card and Kreuger's retrospective findings that a significant positive relationship between higher ratios of female to male teachers and later increased earnings of workers extends to current test results of Ohio School Districts. One possible explanation for increased earnings later in life to be associated with a higher ratio of female teachers is that lack of alternative opportunities for females in the labor market before 1966 made it possible to hire more effective female teachers for a given salary. If the same conditions hold districts with higher ratios of teachers on their staff would …

Women In The Military: What Are The Real Costs?, Kristin Lynn Johnson Jan 1993

Women In The Military: What Are The Real Costs?, Kristin Lynn Johnson

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

With the recent change in social policy allowing women to enter combat roles:, the issue of women in the military has gained much attention. Although women have served the U.S. in every war since the Revolutionary War (although not always in uniform), the contemporary debate about women in the military is being addressed again in the press and on Capitol Hill.

This project addresses the cost of having women in the U.S. military. Specifically, I will compare the relative cost of men and women serving in the armed forces. My hypothesis is that, today, the marginal cost of sustaining a …
