Waging A Global Trade War Alone: The Cost Of Blanket Tariffs On Friend And Foe, Edward J. Balistreri, Christine Mcdaniel Oct 2024

Waging A Global Trade War Alone: The Cost Of Blanket Tariffs On Friend And Foe, Edward J. Balistreri, Christine Mcdaniel

Yeutter Institute International Trade Policy Review

We use an advanced model of the global economy to consider a set of scenarios consistent with the proposal to impose a minimum 60% tariff against Chinese imports and blanket minimum 10% tariff against all other US imports. The model’s structure, which includes imperfect competition in increasing-returns industries, is documented in Balistreri, Böhringer, and Rutherford (2024). The basis for the tariff rates is a proposal from former President Donald Trump (see Wolff 2024). We consider these scenarios with and without symmetric retaliation by our trade partners. Our central finding is that a global trade war between the United States and …

Collaborative Research Report: Personal Assistance Workforce Capacity And Quality Outcomes, Luke Santore, Catherine Ipsen, Lillie Greiman, Lina Stepick Oct 2024

Collaborative Research Report: Personal Assistance Workforce Capacity And Quality Outcomes, Luke Santore, Catherine Ipsen, Lillie Greiman, Lina Stepick

Employment

The growing demand for home-based care services contends with a major shortage of personal care aide (PCA) workers. PCAs support older adults and people with disabilities in home and community-based settings with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, eating, and more. A thriving PCA workforce is necessary to match demand for home and community-based care. However, persistently low wages and poor job quality lead to high rates of turnover and shortages in the workforce. This research report aims to understand the relationship between PCA workforce capacity and quality of consumer-reported care for long-term services and supports.

Closest To The Harm, Closest To The Solution: Indigenous Resistance To Colonial Capitalism Through Female Leadership In Financial Inclusion, Grace Evans

Washington Semester Program

Channeling the strength of the culture, identity, and people who came before them, Indigenous women are countering the racism and sexism inherent in ongoing colonialism through their return to leadership. When it comes to caring for their communities, Native women are dedicated, determined change-makers. This devotion, grounded in the cultural centrality of Indigenous women, has remained strong throughout the tribulations of relatively recent history, marked by atrocities such as invasion, assimilation, and attempted genocide. Colonization is an institution of violence. The United States, in creation and evolution, has been no exception. Particularly targeted through this process have been the bodies, …

The Hidden Atrocity Of The Kafala System: Addressing The Domestic And Sexual Abuse Against Female Migrant Workers In Qatar, Sarah Lee Oct 2024

The Hidden Atrocity Of The Kafala System: Addressing The Domestic And Sexual Abuse Against Female Migrant Workers In Qatar, Sarah Lee

Global Studies Senior Capstone

The Kafala System is a labor sponsorship program in the Gulf Cooperation Council, Jordan, and Lebanon, originally created to be beneficial for migrant workers by providing a legal framework that provides advantages for both foreign workers and their local sponsors. However, this program has turned into an avenue for human trafficking, with different forms of exploitations increasing through it. This paper focuses on this system in the context of Qatar, discussing the history, nature of the Kafala System, as well as it’s impact on female migrant workers. Female migrant workers face a different set of struggles compared to their male …

Nebraska Rural Poll

Most rural Nebraskans are somewhat or very concerned about their household’s cost of living, their household income, and their household’s financial situation. This was particularly true for certain groups, including persons with lower household incomes, younger persons, and persons with construction, installation, or maintenance occupations.

When asked about the impacts of international trade, most rural Nebraskans think it is good for Nebraska’s economy. Residents of the Panhandle are the regional group least likely to think trade is good for the state’s economy.

Many rural Nebraskans think international trade is good for creating jobs in Nebraska, for their own standard of …

Foreign Direct Investment And Global Supply Chain Reshaping In Asean, Nam Khanh Hoang '25, Guangjun Qu Oct 2024

Foreign Direct Investment And Global Supply Chain Reshaping In Asean, Nam Khanh Hoang '25, Guangjun Qu

Annual Student Research Poster Session

The intensifying geopolitical tensions between the United States and China have led to profound changes in global supply chains, particularly in recent years. Additionally, China's strict Zero Covid policy has further complicated the operations of multinational corporations during the pandemic. These developments have forced companies to rethink their sourcing strategies, diversify their suppliers, and relocate manufacturing to reduce tariff impacts and minimize supply chain risks. This study examines how the trade war and the Zero Covid policy have accelerated the diversification of foreign direct investment (FDI) flows from the U.S. and China into Southeast Asia. We analyze FDI data from …

The Impact Of Fintech Lending On Small Business Bankruptcies In California (2008-2023), Lam Nguyen '25, Bin Qiu Oct 2024

The Impact Of Fintech Lending On Small Business Bankruptcies In California (2008-2023), Lam Nguyen '25, Bin Qiu

Annual Student Research Poster Session

This study examines the impact of fintech lending on small business bankruptcies at the county level in California from 2008 to 2023. Using UCC filings and FJC bankruptcy records, we find that increased fintech lending is associated with decreased bankruptcy rates across counties. This suggests that fintech lenders play a crucial role in supporting small businesses by maintaining credit access, even during economic downturns, thereby helping to mitigate the impact of reduced bank lending.

“Inward” Globalization: A Look At Ethnic Education In Vietnam, Quân Nguyễn '25 Oct 2024

“Inward” Globalization: A Look At Ethnic Education In Vietnam, Quân Nguyễn '25

Annual Student Research Poster Session

Globalizing education, while continuously fueling transformative changes to the Vietnamese education system, is predominantly associated with an ‘outward’ expansion toward economically developed nations, instead of an ‘inward’ assessment of educational diversity and equality. How has Vietnam integrated the unique cultural and historical heritages of its 54 ethnic communities into the national educational goals? Across three decades, the established guiding principles, objectives, and solutions increasingly endorsed both national contribution and cultural preservation of ethnic minority students. However, this emerging philosophy tended to be deficit-focused, mainly using ethnic minority groups’ cultural uniqueness to make mainstream teaching materials more appropriate, implicitly assuming that …

Production Box Cost Estimating Relationships For Dod Avionics, Carla J. Cisneros, Edward D. White, Brandon M. Lucas, Jonathan D. Ritschel, Robert D. Fass, Shawn M. Valentine Oct 2024

Production Box Cost Estimating Relationships For Dod Avionics, Carla J. Cisneros, Edward D. White, Brandon M. Lucas, Jonathan D. Ritschel, Robert D. Fass, Shawn M. Valentine

Faculty Publications

The authors use historical information obtained from the Cost Assessment Data Enterprise to estimate recurring production unit cost for DoD avionics via cost estimating relationships (CERs). The specific modeled responses include mean unit cost, median unit cost, and the 100th production unit cost (T100) utilizing learning curve theory. For T100, the authors adopt both a multiplicative and an additive error for CER comparison. Recommended CERs consist of the mean unit cost and the T100 utilizing a multiplicative error. Moreover, results reveal that weight has a significant effect on cost as well as a potential underaccounting of real price change or …

A Simple Higher-Order Rational Email-Game Bubble Model And Some Implications For Momentum, Feng Liu Oct 2024

A Simple Higher-Order Rational Email-Game Bubble Model And Some Implications For Momentum, Feng Liu

Hunt Institute Working Paper Series

We propose a simple higher-order rational greater-fool bubble model, where the period-1 information structure is motivated by an “information leakage” story, reminiscent of Rubinstein’s (1989) email game. Our nth-order bubble model requires only n + 2 states, and is thus simpler than that in Conlon (2004), which required n^2 + 5n + 5 states. Our model is also related to the two-agent-type case of the Araujo and Doblas-Madrid’s (2022) model, and we argue that our model might therefore not capture “momentum,” though simple extensions of it may be able to.

Cartel Breakdown: The Impact Of Demonopsonization On Market Concentration, Nathan Ashby, Miguel A. Ramos-Gonzalez Oct 2024

Cartel Breakdown: The Impact Of Demonopsonization On Market Concentration, Nathan Ashby, Miguel A. Ramos-Gonzalez

Hunt Institute Working Paper Series

The exogenous removal of labor restrictions mandated by Alston vs. NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) has provided a unique natural experiment for analyzing the impact of demonopsonization on market concentration. Using basketball tournament data between 2003 and 2024 we find evidence of increased concentration in performance among higher-tiered programs. The larger magnitude of estimates for women’s programs likely results from wider dispersion in market demand for participating programs predating the reforms. We also analyze parity in regular-season conference play and fail to detect a relationship between the changes and dispersion for higher-tiered conferences, but we do find a relationship for …

The Institutional Impact Of Left-Leaning Populism In Latin America, Nicolas Cachanosky, Joao Pedro Bastos, Alexandre Padilla, Karla C. Hernandez Oct 2024

The Institutional Impact Of Left-Leaning Populism In Latin America, Nicolas Cachanosky, Joao Pedro Bastos, Alexandre Padilla, Karla C. Hernandez

Hunt Institute Working Paper Series

We study the institutional impact of 21st-century left-leaning populist regimes in Latin America. Looking at the representative left-leaning populist regimes in Argentina, Bo-livia, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, we find that these types of populist regimes impose a significant undermining on the liberal-democracy institutional quality of their countries. The institutional cost is both significant and long-lasting, and our synthetic counterfactual suggests that liberal democratic institutions would have im-proved if not for these populist regimes.

Migration Shocks And Economic Redistribution: The Case Of Return Migration To Mexico, Daniel E. Clayton, Jose R. Bucheli, Matias Fontenla Oct 2024

Migration Shocks And Economic Redistribution: The Case Of Return Migration To Mexico, Daniel E. Clayton, Jose R. Bucheli, Matias Fontenla

Hunt Institute Working Paper Series

This paper examines the effects of return migration on inequality, poverty, and income in Mexico, using a reversal in the migration flow in the late 2000s. For the first time since the Great Depression, more migrants returned to Mexico than those who migrated to the United States. We use this return migration shock to construct a two-period panel for municipalities in Mexico and employ an instrumental variable approach using the exogenous variation of U.S. immigration enforcement policies. Our results show that return migration significantly reduced inequality and poverty while boosting income per capita. These effects appear most pronounced municipalities with …

Climate Change Adaptation Through Economic Democracy, Shriraksha Mohan Oct 2024

Climate Change Adaptation Through Economic Democracy, Shriraksha Mohan

Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies

As global climate change poses a serious threat to humanity's survival, equitable and just climate change adaptation has become the focus of several climate movements, social justice groups, governments, and international organizations. Climate sciences and studies have concluded that climate change not only impacts the planet's natural ecosystems, but also has cascading negative consequences on society and the economy. The existing paradigm of economic development has created vast wealth and resource inequality. The inequality further exacerbates the ill effects of climate change and makes vulnerable communities bear a disproportionate amount of the burden of climate catastrophes. This necessitates replacing the …

Seeking Solutions: The Impact Of State Policies On Mental And Behavioral Health, Angela Shoulders Oct 2024

Seeking Solutions: The Impact Of State Policies On Mental And Behavioral Health, Angela Shoulders

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the impact of state-level policies aimed at improving access to mental and behavioral health treatment in the United States. Using rigorous quasi-experimental methods and a variety of data sources, the three manuscripts analyze the effects of distinct but related policies: naloxone co-prescription laws, psychologist prescription privileges, and mental health parity laws mandating timely access to care. The findings suggest that naloxone co-prescription laws lead to unintended consequences, including an increase in opioid overdose deaths among certain demographics. The analyses of psychologist prescribing privileges show expanding prescribing privileges to psychologists increases the availability of mental health providers without …

The Cultural Role Of Rice Cultivation In Female Workforce Participation In India, Gautam Hazarika Oct 2024

The Cultural Role Of Rice Cultivation In Female Workforce Participation In India, Gautam Hazarika

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

Rice and wheat are India's staple cereal crops and there is significant regional variation in the suitability to the cultivation of each. Both are so-called ‘plough-positive’ crops, whose cultivation is benefited by ploughing. It has previously been argued that the ancient adoption of the plough, a heavy implement better suited to handling by men, was a factor in the evolution of cultural norms prescribing a domestic role for women in society (Boserup, 1970). This study contends that rice is an anomalous plough-positive crop in that its cultivation, highly labor-intensive, has traditionally required much female labor. This, it is argued, may …

Financial Management Knowledge For Small And Medium Enterprise Sustainability In Ethiopia, Hon Gew Oct 2024

Financial Management Knowledge For Small And Medium Enterprise Sustainability In Ethiopia, Hon Gew

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Though small and medium enterprises (SMEs) impact Ethiopia’s socioeconomic and political progress, most of these SMEs terminate their operations ahead of reaching their fifth anniversary. A significant number of owners require the enhancement of their comprehension of financial management knowledge, which is essential for the continuous functioning and growth of their company. An in-depth analysis of the financial strategies that SME owners in Ethiopia may use to enhance the long-term sustainability of their business operations was the objective of this qualitative multiple-case study. The present study was grounded in financial literacy theory and the leadership skill model. Data were collected …

Gmm Estimation With Brownian Kernels Applied To Income Inequality Measurement, Jin Seo Cho, Peter C.B. Phillips Oct 2024

Gmm Estimation With Brownian Kernels Applied To Income Inequality Measurement, Jin Seo Cho, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In GMM estimation, it is well known that if the moment dimension grows with the sample size, the asymptotics of GMM differ from the standard finite dimensional case. The present work examines the asymptotic properties of infinite dimensional GMM estimation when the weight matrix is formed by inverting Brownian motion or Brownian bridge covariance kernels. These kernels arise in econometric work such as minimum Cramer-von Mises distance estimation when testing distributional specification. The properties of GMM estimation are studied under different environments where the moment conditions converge to a smooth Gaussian or non-differentiable Gaussian process. Conditions are also developed for …

Welfare Accounting, Eduardo Dávila, Andreas Schaab Oct 2024

Welfare Accounting, Eduardo Dávila, Andreas Schaab

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper develops a welfare accounting decomposition that identifies and quantifies the origins of welfare gains and losses in general economies with heterogeneous individuals and disaggregated production. The decomposition — exclusively based on preferences and technologies — first separates efficiency from redistribution considerations. Efficiency comprises i) exchange efficiency, which captures allocative efficiency gains due to reallocating consumption and factor supply across individuals, and ii) production efficiency, which captures allocative efficiency gains due to adjusting intermediate inputs and factors, as well as technical efficiency gains from primitive changes in technologies, good endowments, and factor endowments. Leveraging the decomposition, we provide a …

What Is The Fallacy Of Approximation?, Matthew Hammerton, Sovan Patra Oct 2024

What Is The Fallacy Of Approximation?, Matthew Hammerton, Sovan Patra

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Many philosophers appeal to the “fallacy of approximation”, or “problem of second best”. However, despite the pervasiveness of such appeals, there has been only a single attempt to provide a systematic account of what the fallacy is. We identify the shortcomings of this account and propose a better one in its place. Our account not only captures all the contexts in which approximation-based reasoning occurs but also systematically explains the several different ways in which it can be in error.

Evaluation Of Unplanned Reattendances To The Pediatric Emergency Department: A Five-Year Study, Liying Toh, Jin Wee Lee, Siok Hoon Ang, Sashikumar Ganapathy, Janani D/O Nadarajan, Shu-Ling Chong

Research Collection School Of Economics

Background: Unplanned reattendances (UR) are an important quality indicator in the emergency department (ED). Understanding the risk factors associated with UR can aid clinicians in optimizing the allocation of time and resources, as well as targeted counselling for this specific group of patients. In this study, we aimed to compare patient characteristics between children who attended a pediatric emergency department (ED) with unplanned reattendances (UR) and those without UR. We also aimed to study the association between healthcare delivery factors such as timing of the attendance, patient load, changeover months for rotating junior doctors, presence of supervision, and rate of …

Estimating Firm-Level Production Functions With Spatial Dependence, Pao-Li Chang, Ryo Makioka, Bo Lin Ng, Zhenlin Yang Oct 2024

Estimating Firm-Level Production Functions With Spatial Dependence, Pao-Li Chang, Ryo Makioka, Bo Lin Ng, Zhenlin Yang

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper proposes a three-stage efficient GMM estimation algorithm for estimating firm-level production functions given spatial dependence across firms due to supplier-customer relationships, sharing of input markets, or knowledge spillover. The procedure builds on Ackerberg, Caves and Frazer (2015) and Wooldridge (2009), but in addition, allows the productivity process to depend on the lagged output levels and lagged input usages of related firms, and spatially correlated productivity shocks across firms, where the set of related firms can differ across the three dimensions of spatial dependence. We establish the asymptotic properties of the proposed estimator, and conduct Monte Carlo simulations to …
