Multivariate Density Forecast Evaluation And Calibration In Financial Risk Management: High-Frequency Returns On Foreign Exchange, Francis X. Diebold, Jinyong Hahn, Anthony S. Tay Nov 1999

Multivariate Density Forecast Evaluation And Calibration In Financial Risk Management: High-Frequency Returns On Foreign Exchange, Francis X. Diebold, Jinyong Hahn, Anthony S. Tay

Research Collection School Of Economics

We provide a framework for evaluating and improving multivariate density forecasts. Among other things, the multivariate framework lets us evaluate the adequacy of density forecasts involving cross-variable interactions, such as time-varying conditional correlations. We also provide conditions under which a technique of density forecast calibration can be used to improve deficient density forecasts, and we show how the calibration method can be used to generate good density forecasts from econometric models, even when the conditional density is unknown. Finally, motivated by recent advances in financial risk management, we provide a detailed application to multivariate high-frequency exchange rate density forecasts. © …

Essays On The Political Economy Of The Dominican Reform Process, Julio Gabriel Andujar Oct 1999

Essays On The Political Economy Of The Dominican Reform Process, Julio Gabriel Andujar

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation provides an analytical framework to study the political economy of policy reform in the Dominican Republic during the nineties. Based on a country study, I develop two theoretical models that replicate the mechanisms of policy approval in developing countries with weak democracies. The first model considers a pro-reform President who submits a tariff bill to an anti-reform Congress dominated by the opposition party. In between, two opposing lobbies try to get their favored policy approved. Lobbies act as Stackelberg leaders vis a vis a weak President. The behavior of the Congress is determined exogenously while the lobbies act …

Economic Currents: The State Of The State Economy, Alan Clayton-Matthews Oct 1999

Economic Currents: The State Of The State Economy, Alan Clayton-Matthews

Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series

In the midst of continuing economic growth, we are seeing signs of a possible future slowdown in the Commonwealth’s economy. June’s Leading Economic Index for Massachusetts was down nearly a percentage point from its May level, and consumer confidence fell moderately in the same month. In the labor market, there is evidence that inflationary pressures may be building.

The Challenge Of Administration By Regulation: Preliminary Findings Regarding The U.S. Government's Venture Capital Funds, Jonathan G.S. Koppell Oct 1999

The Challenge Of Administration By Regulation: Preliminary Findings Regarding The U.S. Government's Venture Capital Funds, Jonathan G.S. Koppell

Publications from President Jonathan G.S. Koppell

This article assesses the ability of elected officials to control public policy as implemented by public/private hybrid organizations, specifically, government venture capital funds. The study reveals greater control over OPIC investment funds than Enterprise Funds despite the existence of more traditional administrative tools of control for Enterprise Funds. This finding suggests that the regulatory infrastructure for hybrid organizations is more determinative of control than the existence (or lack) of traditional administrative control tools. Thus the challenge of hybrid government centers on the development of regulation as a substitute for administration.

Interests, Institutions, And Ideology In Securing Policy Change: The Republican Conversion To Trade Liberalization After Smoot‐Hawley, Douglas A. Irwin, Randall S. Kroszner

Dartmouth Scholarship

This paper investigates how changes in both institutional incentives and economic interests are important for securing durable changes in economic policy. We study how bipartisan support developed to sustain the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act (RTAA) of 1934, which fundamentally transformed U.S. trade policy. The durability of this change was achieved only when the Republicans, long‐time supporters of high tariffs who originally vowed to repeal the RTAA, began to support this Democratic initiative in the 1940s. We find little evidence of an ideological shift among Republicans, but rather an increased sensitivity to export interests for which the institutional structure of the …

Strategic Buyers And Privately Observed Prices, Dirk Bergemann, Juuso Välimäki Oct 1999

Strategic Buyers And Privately Observed Prices, Dirk Bergemann, Juuso Välimäki

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

A model of repeated price competition with large buyers is analyzed. The sellers are allowed to offer different prices to different buyers and the buyers act strategically. The set of subgame perfect Equilibria is investigated under public and private monitoring. With public monitoring the equilibrium set with large buyers expands relative to the standard model where each buyer is small and behaves myopically. With private monitoring, where prices are not observable to the competing sellers, the set of equilibrium payoffs shrinks . In the finitely repeated game with private monitoring, all sales are made by the efficient seller. In the …

Repeated Games With Almost-Public Monitoring, George J. Mailath, Stephen Morris Oct 1999

Repeated Games With Almost-Public Monitoring, George J. Mailath, Stephen Morris

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In repeated games with imperfect public monitoring, players can use public signals to coordinate their behavior perfectly, and thus support cooperative outcomes with the threat of punishments. But with even a small amount of private monitoring, players’ private histories may lead them to have sufficiently different views of the world that such coordination on punishments is no longer possible (we describe a simple strategy profile that is a perfect public equilibrium of a repeated prisoner’s dilemma with imperfect public monitoring, and yet is not an equilibrium for arbitrarily close games with private monitoring). If a perfect public equilibrium has players’ …

World Income Components: Measuring And Exploiting Risk-Sharing Opportunities, Stefano G. Athanasoulis, Robert J. Shiller Oct 1999

World Income Components: Measuring And Exploiting Risk-Sharing Opportunities, Stefano G. Athanasoulis, Robert J. Shiller

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We provide a method for decomposing the variance of changes in incomes in the world into components, world income components (WICs), in such a way as to indicate the most important risk-sharing opportunities among people of the world. We develop a constant absolute risk premium model, an intertemporal general equilibrium model of the world that facilitates consideration of optimal contract design. We show that for a contract designer maximizing a social welfare function, the optimal risk-management contracts maximize the equilibrium world real interest rate. That is the contract designer achieves the risk-optimal interest rate. We show that these WIC securities …

Using Electronic Fund Transfer and Automated Teller Machine introduction as a proxy or current technological development in a cointegration test model it is found that current payment technologies have had mixed effects on money supply and demand, and the interaction between their associated …

How Useful Are Forecasts Of Corporate Profits, Dean D. Croushore

Economics Faculty Publications

If forecasters predict higher earnings for corporations, the stock market will rise. Stock prices will drop with a forecast of lower earnings. But are such forecasts on the money? Dean Croushore uses data from the Survey of Professional Forecasters to check the accuracy of forecasts of corporate profits. The results show that, despite the volatility of corporate profits, the forecasts are rational.
