Children In The Entertainment And Advertising Industries, Gary Partington Jan 1989

Children In The Entertainment And Advertising Industries, Gary Partington

Research outputs pre 2011

This survey of the employment of children in the entertainment and advertising industries has described the nature and process of employment of children in the following areas:

a) film dramas and documentaries

b) television commercials

c) radio commercials and dramas

d) print advertising

e) live theatre

f) modelling.

The survey was limited in its scope, and any conclusions based on it must be regarded as tentative until a more thorough investigation based on a larger, more representative sample is conducted. Even so, some companies appear to maintain high standards of conduct in relation to the employment of children, judging from …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

Out of nothing, something. ROBERT WEXELBLATT examines the meaning of the creative act and scrutinizes the first sentences of major works to illustrate the writer's power to fashion time and place and character in the choice, juxtaposition, and concatenation of words. Now Chairperson of the Division of Humanities at Boston University, Wexelblatt writes scholarly articles on literary subjects (recently on Fitzgerald, Lawrence, Camus, and Nietzsche), stories, and poetry, as well as essays, several of which have graced The Midwest Quarterly.

Literary critics too frequently mistake the leaves for the forest, and by failing to explore …

Self-Concept Competency Of National Aeronautics And Space Administration Research And Development Managers, Mark A. Beymer Jan 1989

Self-Concept Competency Of National Aeronautics And Space Administration Research And Development Managers, Mark A. Beymer

Dissertations and Theses

Boyatzis has stated that "true" management competencies are characteristics of a manager which differentiate superior from average and below average performance. Boyatzis, however, treats a manager's self-image (self-concept) as a "threshold" rather than a "real" competency. Lafferty's research, which has measured relationships between several lifestyle (self-concept) variables and corresponding organizational behavior, has found that performance differences between average and high performing managers are associated with differences in self-concept construction. The researcher proposes to treat variations in self-concept measurements from managers as indications of their relative management competency. Thisresearch investigates seventeen hypotheses relating to the self-concepts of high performing, mid-level technical …

An Economic Analysis Of Fertility, Market Participation And Marriage Behaviour In Recent Japan, David K. C. Lee, Chin Lee Gan Jan 1989

An Economic Analysis Of Fertility, Market Participation And Marriage Behaviour In Recent Japan, David K. C. Lee, Chin Lee Gan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This is the 1st attempt in modelling fertility, labor force participation and marriage rate using Japanese data. The authors use Butz and Ward's model and extend it to a simultaneous equation system as in the case of Winegarden. Although the estimates obtained by Full Information Maximum Likelihood and Three Stage Least Squares of the model are statistically significant, some of the signs of the estimates are not consistent to a priori predictions. The crux of the model is that an increase in the wages of men has an unambiguous positive effect on fertility, whereas an increase in wages of women …

Voting Behaviour In Singapore: A Preliminary Investigation From A Multi-Attribute Attitudinal Perspective, S. M. Leong, Chin Tiong Tan, K. C. Wong Jan 1989

Voting Behaviour In Singapore: A Preliminary Investigation From A Multi-Attribute Attitudinal Perspective, S. M. Leong, Chin Tiong Tan, K. C. Wong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The multi-attribute attitude model is employed to study voter behaviour in Singapore. Specifically, a set of beliefs of the personal attributes of political candidates considered important to voters was examined. Results indicated that such beliefs did predict voters' affective evaluation and intention to vote for a typical political candidate reasonably well. Implications of the findings are discussed and suggestions for future research provided.

The Role Of Unincorporated Enterprises In The Indian Economy, R Vaidyanathan Dec 1988

The Role Of Unincorporated Enterprises In The Indian Economy, R Vaidyanathan

IIMB Management Review

The objective of this paper is to highlight the role of unincorporated
enterprises in the national economy. Most of the studics regarding the nonagricultural
portion of our economy concentrate on the corporate or company sector.
Discussions on saving, taxation, capital formation, etc. also to a large extent pertain
to the corporate sector, consisting of companies which are incorporated under the
Company’s Act of 1956. But the other sector, viz., unincorporated enterprises has
not been studied thoroughly in respect of its role in the national economy. In our
context this should include a study of proprietorships, partnerships, HUFs,
Cooperatives, ie. organisations …

Linkages Between Regulated And Unregulated Markets: The Case Of Milk Supply In Kenya, Wayne H. Howard, Ian Mcdonald Nov 1988

Linkages Between Regulated And Unregulated Markets: The Case Of Milk Supply In Kenya, Wayne H. Howard, Ian Mcdonald

Agribusiness

Linkages between the regulated and unregulated dairy markets in Kenya were examined using an econometric model of the fluid milk intake for eight processing plants. Counter-intuitive results were obtained: an increase in the regulated price was significant in decreasing intake in the regulated market, indicating that a price increase in the regulated market also increased price and quantity supplied in the unregulated market. Lagged rainfall was a proxy for available feed and was highly significant in explaining milk intake in the regulated market.

Development Of A Weighted Application Blank For The Carryout Clerk Classification In A Large Retail Organization, Linda Gabbard Nov 1988

Development Of A Weighted Application Blank For The Carryout Clerk Classification In A Large Retail Organization, Linda Gabbard

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a Weighted Application Blank to predict turnover for use as a selection tool for a large retail organization. Utilizing the England (1971) procedure, it was hypothesized that significant derivation and cross-validities would be obtained. The hypothesis was partially supported: the derivation validity coefficient was significant (r = .28, p < .01) and the resulting cross-validity coefficient was net significant (r = 19, p < .05). The results and recommendations for implementation of the WAB are discussed.

Initial Test Of A Farrowing Crate With Inward-Sloping Sides, D. Fraser, P. A. Phillips, B. K. Thompson

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection

A farrowing crate was designed with sides spaced well apart (1150 mm) at the sow's standing height but angled inward near the floor to restrict the sow's lying area and to prevent the sow from dropping suddenly onto one side. Survival and body-weight data were collected for 20 farrowings in the prototype crate and for 18-20 farrowings in each of 3 other crate types. No significant differences were found in stillbirth rate, other deaths to 14 days, or average piglet weight gains, but gains were somewhat more variable in one of the conventional designs which interfered with the piglets' access …

Dynamic Adjustment In The U.S. Dairy Industry, Wayne H. Howard, Richard C. Shumway Nov 1988

Dynamic Adjustment In The U.S. Dairy Industry, Wayne H. Howard, Richard C. Shumway

Agribusiness

A dual model is used to examine the dynamic structure of the U.S. dairy industry. Properties implied by the theory of the competitive firm and independent adjustment of two quasi-fixed inputs, labor and herd size, are tested and not rejected. Instantaneous adjustment, however, is soundly rejected for each quasi-fixed input. Input adjustment to optimal levels is estimated to take about two years for labor and ten for cows. Quality adjustments of the labor and cow series do not fully embody the technological change that has occurred in this industry over the study period.

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

The fiction of William Burroughs focuses on control and the illusion of personal freedom, a situation JOHN Z. GUZLOWSKI finds reinforced in the author's treatment of the family. A teacher in the English Department of Eastern Illinois University and Editor of Karamu, a poetry and fiction magazine, Guzlowski’s work on recent American fiction has appeared in a variety of journals.

Ways of understanding can at times become ways of avoiding reality and real comprehension. Such was the case in Edith Wharton’s Old New York, as discussed by DAVID A. GODFREY. Currently a lecturer at the …

Peace, Or The Problem-Free Interval, Roger A. Lohmann Oct 1988

Peace, Or The Problem-Free Interval, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This paper argues for wider recognition of general program indicators as evaluative criteria and sets forth four general dimensions of outcome measures that might serve as comparative evaluative indicators for a wide range of programs and services. Pragmatic problem-solving is outlined as a theoretical basis for an approach to such general indicators. The argument for general program indicators of problem presence, frequency, duration and severity is grounded in general problem-solving theory and is part of an evaluative study of a mental health crisis unit. Peace, defined as a problem-free interval, is offered as an example of a general program outcome …
