Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The purpose of this project was to create, plan, and implement an original instructional module on the topic of valuing diversity in business. My areas of emphasis were gender, sex role issues, and communication.

My responsibilities included: coordination with the instructor in all stages of planning and implementation; researching appropriate learning models for such a course; identifying topics of greatest significance within diversity; preparing and presenting one complete day of instruction; adapting cases and worksheets for both the course introduction and the gender issues/ communication sections; conducting personal interviews with appropriate resource individuals; creating an original group project; arranging for …

Technology Exports From A Small, Very Open Nic: The Case Of Singapore, Eng Fong Pang, Hal Hill May 1991

Technology Exports From A Small, Very Open Nic: The Case Of Singapore, Eng Fong Pang, Hal Hill

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper examines the nature, composition and determinants of Singapore's early stage technology exports. The pattern of these exports reflects the quite unique mix of policy and institutional features in Singapore's environment - remarkably high growth, very open economy, rapid structural change, particularly intense economic relations with neighboring Southeast Asian nations, and a pervasive and paternalistic state role. The bases of Singapore's comparative advantage in these service exports are identified, and some general implications from its experience are analyzed.

Remarks To Faculty And Students At The University Of Southern California, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

The 1990s will be a critical decade for Africa. The world is in the midst of fundamental change and the ideological blinkers which so greatly hampered economic development for so long have been taken off. Africa too is in the midst of change, political as well as economic. This change is characterized most fundamentally by the loud and persistent calls from people in Africa for more participation in the decisions which affect their lives. This is a very positive development. We at the World Bank feel confident that we are in a position to respond to these far-reaching changes. This …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

Chiding modern historians for a hidebound rigidity that blinds them to the truths that lie in historical fiction and poetry, JAMES A. STEVENSON argues that Edmund Spenser's history of Elizabethan times revealed less than his magnificent, but outwardly fictional Faerie Queen. Holder of a doctorate in history and a recently completed master's degree in English literature, Stevenson has published articles on history, film, and literature in a variety of academic journals, including an essay on Lincoln's affinity for Macbeth in The Midwest Quarterly. He is currently Assistant Professor of History at East Georgia College.

Computer Use In The Scientific Office, Douglas L. Miller

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Over the past two decades computers in research and development organizations have become a complex and integral part of the work process. Yet to date only a handful of systematic investigations have addressed issues involving scientists' or other professionals' use of computers, and very little is known about factors influencing use (Bikson and Gutek, 1983; Blacker and Brown, 1986; Collopy, 1988; Gasser, 1986; Helander, 1985; Nickolson, 1985; Pope, 1985). As a result, this research was designed to address four objectives. The first was to develop and evaluate a descriptive model of variables influencing scientists' computer use. The second objective was …

Public Benefit And Private Interest: Chronicles Of The Hyde Park Paper Mill, Jeffrey E. Lindenthal Mar 1991

Public Benefit And Private Interest: Chronicles Of The Hyde Park Paper Mill, Jeffrey E. Lindenthal

New England Journal of Public Policy

Until it was mothballed and put up for sale in December 1987, a small paper mill in Hyde Park, a neighborhood on the outskirts of Boston 's city limits, was the oldest continuously operating paper mill in the United States. This particular plant closing occurred at a time manufacturing employment in the state had fallen off precipitously. It also coincided with an awareness among some policymakers that recycling programs were urgently needed to combat a garbage glut, in Massachusetts and states across the nation, attributable to an increasingly wasteful society and dwindling landfill capacity. Efforts to reopen the Hyde Park …

Finances And The Social Settlement: The Management Of Hull House, Roger A. Lohmann Mar 1991

Finances And The Social Settlement: The Management Of Hull House, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The development of social welfare history has powerful implications for the study of community practice theory. This historical study examines the Hull House social settlement as an actual, working social service establishment, rather than simply the stage for the activities of its most famous resident, Jane Addams. Hull House is examined as an organization, a campus, and a pioneering set of social programs. Its incorporation, by-laws are examined and all board members serving during Addams' 40 years there are identified. Various aspects of dealing with important donors, cash flows from donations and accountability issues are identified and discussed, as are …

Discovery Of Selected Water Dispensers By Newborn Pigs, P. A. Phillips, D. Fraser Mar 1991

Discovery Of Selected Water Dispensers By Newborn Pigs, P. A. Phillips, D. Fraser

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection

Newborn pigs in 86 litters were offered drinking water from four types of dispenser to determine how quickly each design would be discovered. On average piglets discovered water within about 24 h from an exposed water surface (bowl or cup), whereas discovery time was delayed to more than 72 h with nipple or push-lever dispensers. A prototype dispenser with a wide bowl and continuous bubbling action reduced (P < 0.05) average discovery time to about 14 h.
