It is enlightening to page through the "Olympic Preview" issue of Sports Illustrated. The photos are beautiful, but the advertising is clearly the central feature. Not unlike the Olympic Games themselves.

Does Sex Discrimination Exist In Faculty Salaries At Western Kentucky University? An Empirical Examination Of The Wage Gap, Reed Vesey Aug 1992

Does Sex Discrimination Exist In Faculty Salaries At Western Kentucky University? An Empirical Examination Of The Wage Gap, Reed Vesey

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis examines wage differentials between male and female faculty salaries at Western Kentucky University. A human capital model of salary determination is examined by using regression analysis on relevant personal and job characteristics of faculty members. A large portion of the wage gap between men and women is explained through differences in the personal and job characteristics. A portion of the wage gap remains unexplained, however, the probability of discrimination playing a substantial role in salary is very small.

Career Achievement Of Employed Adult Women As A Function Of Family Variables, Kimberly Sue Wright Aug 1992

Career Achievement Of Employed Adult Women As A Function Of Family Variables, Kimberly Sue Wright

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While women's career development is beginning to be addressed in the literature, little is known about the variables which influence women's career achievement. The purpose of this study was to identify a subset of family variables which would predict career achievement for women. This study investigated the differences between high and low achievement women with respect to the following variables: marital/relationship status, number of children, parental education levels, parental occupation levels, birth order, relationship with parents (support, rejection, overinvolvement) and general family functioning. iii The participants were 140 women between the ages of 25 and 45 who were employed full …

Olympics In Barcelona: Up Close And Personal, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The 1992 Summer Olympics from Barcelona is less than a week old and already I am irritated by any number of things, but especially by NBC. Those who chart such things tell us that NBC will provide 161 hours of mostly taped coverage of the XXVth Olympiad. What they don't tell us is that of these 161 hours, approximately 10 minutes of each hour contains actual event coverage. The other 50 minutes of the hour are filled with commercials from every major U.S. corporation featuring Olympic athletes past and present; promotional spots for NBC programming; endless carping about the personal …

Wimbledon - Baseball At Mid-Season, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The world's oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament is heading into its final weekend. Strawberries and cream at Wimbledon go back over a century, and the royal trappings surrounding this tournament are enough to make a tennis millionaire feel right at home. One suspects however that this year Lady Diana will not make her usual appearance in the Royal Box at Centre Court, with most of the love having gone out of her game.

"A League Of Their Own", Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It may come as a surprise to some that "A League of Their Own," the new motion picture starring Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, and Madonna, is based on fact. The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League(AAGPBL) was founded in 1943 by Philip Wrigley, with the encouragement of Branch Rickey and Bill Veeck.

Service Centers: The Neglected Role Of The Town, Roger A. Lohmann Jul 1992

Service Centers: The Neglected Role Of The Town, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The dichotomy of urban and rural areas does not fit the circumstances of contemporary social life in the United States. Although needy populations redistributed across the social landscape, almost no social service agencies serving rural populations are, or ever have been, located in either urban (city) or rural (countryside) areas. Social agencies serving rural populations are nearly always located in towns. The town is a unique and distinctive rural social, economic and political institution. An adequate approach to conceptualizing rural social work must begin with recognition of one of the fundamental insights of contemporary urban theory: the regional character of …

Expansion In Professional Sports, Richard C. Crepeau Jun 1992

Expansion In Professional Sports, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The big news in Florida sports last week was expansion. The Florida Marlins sent two farm teams onto the field for the first time, and the dreams of future glory were put into motion. Also the Tampa Bay Lightning began stocking its roster, first with the castoffs of other teams, and then in the entry draft. The big news this week in Orlando was the drafting of Shaquille O'Neal, finally.

The Beauty Of The Athleticism In The Nba And The Nhl, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Two or three decades ago there was a joke that circulated about a kindergarten teacher who asked the children if they knew the four seasons of the year. An eager young boy waved his hand, and shouted the answer: Baseball, Football, Basketball and Hockey. That cute little joke has lost all of its meaning in this, the last decade of the 20th century.

Nba And Nhl:Success And Failure, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

While watching NBA and NHL playoffs over the past few months I have been struck by the remarkable difference between what has happened to these two professional sports leagues in the last ten to fifteen years. Under the leadership of David Stern the NBA has prospered with Bird and Magic, expanding its presence to what is now approaching world-wide dimensions; while the NHL first with Gretzky and now Lemieux languished with John Zeigler at the helm.

Estimating The Effectiveness Of Extension Information Systems Using Farm Trical And Subjective Probabilities, Wayne H. Howard, Robert W. Blake, Thomas O. Knight, Richard C. Shumway, Michael A. Tomaszewski Jun 1992

Estimating The Effectiveness Of Extension Information Systems Using Farm Trical And Subjective Probabilities, Wayne H. Howard, Robert W. Blake, Thomas O. Knight, Richard C. Shumway, Michael A. Tomaszewski

Agribusiness

A method of combining survey data and Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) records to achieve low cost farm trials is presented. Farm trials and surveys of current practices and production responses are useful to identify yield gaps between expectations predicted from experimental findings and actual field results. Different management schemes can be ranked using subjective probabilities and stochastic dominance to enhance successful implementation of research findings and to increase the feedback between researchers, extension workers, and producers. A survey of current masitis control practices and expected milk yield response is the example. Combining survey results with DHIA records allowed estimating …

The Supreme Court As Risk Manager: An Analysis Of Skinner, Todd F. Volyn, James F. Mogan, Lisa M. White

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Examining a recent case in which the U.S. Supreme Court approved the collection of blood and urine samples from railroad employees, the authors conclude that, in attempting to improve railroad safety, both majority and minority opinions reflected undue emphasis on technical issues and inadequate attention to the intangible social values underlying traditional Constitutional rights to privacy.

Doing Business In The Third World- With Special Reference To India, Premchander Jun 1992

Doing Business In The Third World- With Special Reference To India, Premchander

IIMB Management Review

Dictators, debts and declining economies are the dangers of the third world which have effectively kept away western businesses. The term third world, a product of the now defunct cold war, refers to those nations which currently constitute three fourths of the world population that are poor. This is a variegated grouping of nations with differing political systems, ranging from Westminster type democracies, neo-fascist dictatorships to monarchies -hereditary and otherwise. The sustaining economic models may be capitalist, Marxian or any acceptable mix of the two leading some writers to believe in the existence of convergent capitalism where elements of freemarket …

A Comparative Analysis Of Organisation Health-Care Machinery In Hospital: Doctoral Dissertation Abstract, J P Sahu

IIMB Management Review

Health Care Services are significant in providing social justice and equal life opportunities to individuals in the society. The health care system of today, is evoking criticism from various corners, for its rising costs due to introduction of expensive sophisticated technology, maldistribution, dehumanisation and heavy bureaucratisation, etc. This is particularly true for the developing countries where on one hand, increasing population and ever changing disease patterns (due to developing activities like agriculture, irrigation, mining and industrialisation, etc.) and growing expectations of the people (due to increase in education and communication) on the other, exert further pressure on the limited health …
