Hockey Fans And Magic Fans Compared, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The gentleman was in is early thirties and wore a black t-shirt with "House of Babes" printed across the front. On the back were three less than virginal looking cartoon bikini babes accentuated by interesting words like "nasty" and "feisty." He was sitting in the front row at the Orlando Arena. It was not a Magic game.

Nba Referees: A Problem On Many Fronts - Trouble In Magic Land, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

What a week this has been. Greg Norman provides us with one of the great collapses of all time. Magic Johnson provides us with shattered glass from his house. While the Orlando Magic both collapse and shatter. And questions abound about the refs in the NBA, those wonderful marvelous fellows who everyone was anxious to have back on the court when they went missing at the beginning of the season.

Baseball Opens In Seattle - Fantasy Baseball Is Growing, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Baseball season is here. Those of us in Florida have said goodbye to spring training, which once had the ambiance of relaxation and play, and now is a speck on the major league entertainment juggernaut. The last players have been cut, the minor leagues no longer wear major league uniforms, some dreams are over and others soon will be. The cry of play ball has been heard across the snow covered landscape.

College Basketball: The Coaches Game, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

As we approach the Final Four, the Big Dance, and the New Jersey swamps, I am reminded of Al McGuire's comment that professional basketball is a player's game, while college basketball is a coaches game. Nearly all the great programs are associated with great coaches: Wooden at UCLA, Smith at North Carolina, Rupp at Kentucky.

Extreme Response Style, Irvine Clarke Iii Apr 1996

Extreme Response Style, Irvine Clarke Iii

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

The objective of this research was to understand the effect of culture on Extreme Response Style (ERS) for cross-cultural marketing efforts employing Likert type scales. Growth in quantitative cross-cultural marketing research has brought alternative methodological considerations, like ERS, to the forefront of attention, since, traditional inferential statistics used in group comparisons become confounded by this systematic bias. Marketers comparing groups with differing degrees of response style may incorrectly make claims based on observed differences that are strictly attributable to cultural ERS. Therefore, the specific objective of this dissertation was to relate ERS to culture, Likert response formats and to demonstrate …

Trading Networks Of Chinese Entrepreneurs In Singapore, Thomas Menkhoff, Chalmers E. Labig Apr 1996

Trading Networks Of Chinese Entrepreneurs In Singapore, Thomas Menkhoff, Chalmers E. Labig

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The entrenchment of entrepreneurs in local, regional, or global business networks based on kinship, clanship, territorial, or ethnic ties has often been cited as characteristic of Chinese business communities in Southeast Asia. Qualitative interviews with Singaporean Chinese merchant-exporters were conducted in order to examine this thesis. The findings reveal that there is a strong tendency among Chinese entrepreneurs in Singapore to rely on external commercial relationships with ‘outsiders’ and ‘friends’ rather with those related by blood or marriage. It is suggested that kinship reciprocity may under some circumstances curb the autonomy and freedom of the transacting actors, thus limiting their …

The Effect Of An Integrated Library Computer System On Job Characteristics In Public Libraries, Richard J. Harris Apr 1996

The Effect Of An Integrated Library Computer System On Job Characteristics In Public Libraries, Richard J. Harris

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management

This study investigated the effects of computerization with an integrated library system (ILS) on job characteristics in public libraries.

Two different but complementary research design components were used. One component consisted of a case study of the Norfolk (Virginia) Public Library, where an ILS was implemented between 1988 and 1995. The case study relied on data from interviews, archival sources, and questionnaires. The other component was a mail survey of public library workers across Virginia.

Case study interview data was analyzed by coding. Time series analysis was used to examine trends in budget and staffing. Pattern matching logic was used …

Causal Models Of Work-Family Conflict From Family And Organizational Perspectives, Lyse Guttau Wells Apr 1996

Causal Models Of Work-Family Conflict From Family And Organizational Perspectives, Lyse Guttau Wells

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

More women are entering the workforce and the number of dual career couples has increased and will probably continue to do so. As women's tasks and responsibilities outside of the home have increased, those within the home have not diminished resulting in higher work-family conflict (Greenglass, Pantony, & Burke, 1988). This research examined a woman's work-family conflict from both work and family perspectives. Two models were described and tested. One model included individual and family antecedents and consequences of work-family conflict. The antecedents included sex-role attitudes, role salience, and perfectionism in the wife. The consequences were quality of family life …

Toward Understanding Team Leadership: The Empirical Development Of A Team Leadership Classification System, Brian J. Ruggeberg Apr 1996

Toward Understanding Team Leadership: The Empirical Development Of A Team Leadership Classification System, Brian J. Ruggeberg

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to develop a classification system of team leadership through the empirical process of numerical classification. Although the value and importance of leadership have been recognized in the team literature, few empirical studies have been conducted to understand the phenomenon of team leadership. A thorough review of the relevant literature was conducted to identify the various behaviors, functions, traits, and KSAOs associated with team leadership. This information was then used to select and construct data collection instruments for the classification process.

Two separate studies were conducted to achieve the overall goal of developing a team …

The Soul Of The Firm (Nairobi, Kenya), C. William Pollard Mar 1996

The Soul Of The Firm (Nairobi, Kenya), C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

In this speech at the Daystar Symposium (Nairobi, Kenya), Pollard notes that whereas the "theory of the firm" is often defined by the objective goal of maximizing profit, the "soul of the firm" should be considered the people the organization employs. Corporate success, therefore, requires that profit be considered alongside the development of character.

Sport And National Anthem, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The major flap over the suspension of Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf from the Denver Nuggets by the NBA for failure to stand at attention for the National Anthem has been settled. In the midst of the controversy there was considerable discussion, and a great deal of misinformation was tossed around about the history of this ritual.

Jackie Robinson's First Spring In Daytona, Richard C. Crepeau Mar 1996

Jackie Robinson's First Spring In Daytona, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

On March 17,1946 the Montreal Royals played the Brooklyn Dodgers in a spring training game in Daytona Beach and Jackie Roosevelt Robinson wore the uniform of the Royals. History was made that day as Jackie Robinson broke the color line in organized baseball. Although overshadowed by Robinson's first game as a Brooklyn Dodger a little over a year later, this game in Daytona was an important step on the road to the desegregation of both baseball and America.

The Iditarod, Richard C. Crepeau Mar 1996

The Iditarod, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It's the first week in March and in sporting terms that means it is the time of the first sounds of spring. No not the crack of the bat hitting ball, but the sounds of dogs barking and men and women urging them on down the trail. These are the sounds of "The Last Great Race on Earth," the Iditarod.

The Soul Of The Firm As It Moves To The 21st Century, C. William Pollard Mar 1996

The Soul Of The Firm As It Moves To The 21st Century, C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

In an address delivered at the 50th Annual Indiana University Business Conference (Indianapolis, IN), Pollard contends that the "soul" of any corporate firm is its people. In light of this, he goes on to argue that corporate success depends upon managers who commit themselves to a vision of leadership defined by service to both employees and customers.

IIMB Management Review

Organisational Ethnography, by Suchitra Mouly and Jayaram Sankaran applies the insider or ethnographic perspective to the study of Indian R&D settings. In spite of its rather forbidding title, (ethnography according to the Webster’s dictionary is cultural anthropology), there are some interesting and novel aspects to this research work.

Delayering Organisation Structure, Nina Jacob, V S Mahesh, N M Agrawal Mar 1996

Delayering Organisation Structure, Nina Jacob, V S Mahesh, N M Agrawal

IIMB Management Review

Delayering as a tool for organisational re-structuring has been a concern of both theorists and practitioners for some years now, but analyses of the literature have been inconclusive with respect to its impact on actual performance. Delayering has been conceptualised as the process of removing specific levels from the existing hierarchy of an organisation. The result is a flattening of the organisation’s vertical boundaries, affecting such traditional structural manifestations of hierarchy as span of control, chain of command, and limits of authority.
