Some Challenges Facing Logistics Education At The New Millennium, Benjamin J. Allen, Richard F. Poist

Journal of Transportation Management

Although the future of logistics looks bright as the new millennium approaches, logistics programs in higher education face significant changes and challenges. This article examines six challenges—three challenges facing business education in general and three challenges directly and uniquely facing logistics education. Five propositions about the future of logistics education are developed. For logistics education, particularly the traditional logistics programs, the years after the new millennium will be both the best of times and the worst of times.

Aerial Port Location Study, Levenchi L. Dingle Sep 1997

Aerial Port Location Study, Levenchi L. Dingle

Theses and Dissertations

This study performed an investigation on determining the appropriate number and locations of continental United States aerial ports. To accomplish this a linear programming formulation was adapted with the optimizing function based on trading off the cost of shipping cargo against port operating costs. Cargo would travel from CONUS origin, through aerial port of embarkation (APOE), to aerial port of debarkation (APOD) at minimum cost to the DoD. The need for the study was precipitated by continued reductions in the military budget, consolidation of defense depots, and the reduction in the number of personnel stationed overseas. Cargo movement data was …

An Examination Of Risk And Resource Sharing Behavior Between Ltl Trucking Companies And Warehouse Providers, Joe B. Hanna, David J. Bloomberg Sep 1997

An Examination Of Risk And Resource Sharing Behavior Between Ltl Trucking Companies And Warehouse Providers, Joe B. Hanna, David J. Bloomberg

Journal of Transportation Management

Increased demand for third-party logistics providers who can offer multiple services to their customers has encouraged many entities to explore innovative ways to expand service offerings. The current research examines Class I LTL motor carriers who have expanded their services to include warehousing. While there are several ways to achieve a service expansion into warehousing, the current research focuses on firms who have elected to expand by creating a strategic alliance type relationship with an external warehouse provider. The research examines carriers attitudes about risk and resource sharing in the alliance relationship. The results indicate that carriers are moderately receptive …

The Need For Exchange Rates Convergence In Nigeria, P. J. Obaseki Sep 1997

The Need For Exchange Rates Convergence In Nigeria, P. J. Obaseki

Economic and Financial Review

This paper examined the relevance of exchange rates convergence in the context of a realistic exchange rate and the implementation of a successful Economic Adjustment Programme, with particular reference to external sector competitiveness and viability. The paper was unambiguous in respect of the superiority of convergence over other schemes ranging from multiple to a dual exchange rate system. A unified exchange rate system, resulting from a free interplay of market forces, eliminates waste arising from subsidies and inefficient allocation of foreign exchange. A unified rate also reduces rent-seeking behaviours that flourish under a dual or multiple exchange rate system. After …

Strategy For Growth-Led Poverty Alleviation In Nigeria, A. S. F. Atoloye Sep 1997

Strategy For Growth-Led Poverty Alleviation In Nigeria, A. S. F. Atoloye

Economic and Financial Review

The economic growth process of a country is determined by a number of factors among which is technological change. Increased output/performance permitted by this goes a long way in alleviating poverty. Rapid and sustained economic growth utilizing a new industrial strategy calls for proficient use of the natural advantages of modern infrastructures which further serves as a poverty-reducing strategy. The author states that the most credible option by which the poor can receive a fair share of the benefits of development is by subjecting the economy to the full discipline and rigours of market forces for a poverty-reducing growth. Governments …

Nafta, Motor Carriers And Highway Safety, Kathryn Dobie, William A. Cunningham Sep 1997

Nafta, Motor Carriers And Highway Safety, Kathryn Dobie, William A. Cunningham

Journal of Transportation Management

The signing of the NAFTA agreement signaled the beginning of increased efforts to harmonize trade between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Unfortunately the harmonization of transportation links is lagging far behind proposed implementation dates. This narrative describes the highway safety, and concerns expressed by highway safety advocates and Teamsters union representatives, and documented by the GAO. The authors propose a market based alternative to restricting transborder traffic to the narrow commercial zone presently in place.

What Is A Logistics Analyst? A Perspective From One British University On Increasing Student Awareness And Knowledge Of Logistics Education And Career Opportunities, John Dinwoodie Sep 1997

What Is A Logistics Analyst? A Perspective From One British University On Increasing Student Awareness And Knowledge Of Logistics Education And Career Opportunities, John Dinwoodie

Journal of Transportation Management

Many sophomore Transport students at a British university were unfamiliar with the role of the logistics analyst. This paper discusses the current extent of student knowledge of some employment roles within intermodal distribution and the processes by which students acquire an understanding of it,providing new information for logistics teachers and career advisors. Qualitative analysis of student descriptions of relevant roles revealed a schema whereby concepts evolved, enabling a teaching package to be devised which accelerated the learning process. The assistance of practitioners, and similar studies by other academics are needed in attempting to raise the awareness of future students.

Measurement Issues In Poverty, A. Englama, A. Bamidele Sep 1997

Measurement Issues In Poverty, A. Englama, A. Bamidele

Economic and Financial Review

The paper defines poverty as certain disabilities such as the inability to participate with dignity in society. It also demonstrates that in measuring poverty, emphasis should not be mainly on income or consumption, hut that cognizance should be taken of social, economic and basic infrastructures as well as environmental factors. The paper farther mentions some inherent problems in measuring poverty such as conceptual and data problems. Once these problems are overcome, a simple head count could provide an insight into poverty measurement. J11e depth and severity of poverty can be determined by the P-Index which captures the number of the …

Mobilizing Rural Savings In Papua New Guinea: Myths, Realities, And Needed Policy Reform (N.A. Fernando, The Journal Of Institute Of Development Economics, Tokyo, Japan, Vol. Xxix, No. 1, March, 1992), M. Abdulkadir

Economic and Financial Review

A review of the article "Mobilizing Rural Savings in Papua New Guinea: Myths, Realities and Needed Policy Reforms" is imperative considering the efforts of the Federal Government and monetary authorities, especially the Central Bank of Nigeria to mobilize rural savings in Nigeria. This is evidenced by the establishment of the Nigerian Agricultural and Cooperative Bank ( 1973), the Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme ( 1977), the Central Bank of Nigeria Rural Banking Programme (1977), the Peoples Bank (1990) and the Community Bank (1990) nationwide.

The Influence Of Foreign Culture On Air Force Contingency Contracting Operations, Christian M. Ruefer Sep 1997

The Influence Of Foreign Culture On Air Force Contingency Contracting Operations, Christian M. Ruefer

Theses and Dissertations

Abstract Contingency Contracting Officers (CCOs) are increasingly finding themselves an integral part of overseas deployments, purchasing in theater whatever the combat forces cannot bring with them. As a result, CCOs must deal directly with businesses and the individuals who operate them in the deployed location. Cultural differences between the CCO and suppliers can become an issue not encountered in stateside operations. This thesis was designed to explore the possible impact of culture on the deployed CCO's ability to do their job. There were four objectives of this study. First, those tasks CCOs must accomplish in order to perform their job …

The Future Of The Third Sector, Roger A. Lohmann Sep 1997

The Future Of The Third Sector, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The U.S. "nonprofit sector" and other forms of contemporary national third sectors which are currently spreading around the world arose in a unique historical moment and for distinct historical reasons and are unlikely to outlast that moment in history. Voluntary action on the other hand has deep roots reaching far back in human history and is likely to be around far into the future.

Ruminating On The U.S. Open Tennis Championships, Richard C. Crepeau Aug 1997

Ruminating On The U.S. Open Tennis Championships, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Looking back to the first radio commentary I did six years ago, the subject was the U.S. Open Tennis Championships where the stellar performance that year by Jimmy Connors, especially in his late night match against Patrick McEnroe, was such a contrast with the sorry performance by the over hyped Andre Agassi. Connors has since moved on to the seniors tour while Agassi's career remains largely the story of the failure to live up to the hype and the potential.

College Sport And Pell Grants, Richard C. Crepeau Aug 1997

College Sport And Pell Grants, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

All the color and pageantry of college football is about to be unleashed on us again, along with all the NCAA public relations machinery designed to tell us how important college sports have been in building character in modern America. What we won't hear discussed in those NCAA halftime promotional spots will be the details of fraud in Pell Grants, the federal aid program for needy college students.
