Is Boston Becoming A Branch-Plant Town?, Lawrence Franko
Is Boston Becoming A Branch-Plant Town?, Lawrence Franko
New England Journal of Public Policy
A decade ago, Boston appeared to be emerging as a headquarters city for a large number of world-class enterprises. Notwithstanding the recovery from the early-1990s recession, and a thriving entrepreneurial economy of business acorns, Boston today seems on its way to becoming largely a branch-plant town. None of the 1980s Massachusetts Miracle saplings or the more recent acorns have grown into mighty corporate oaks headquartered here. This article discusses the risks of having our current prosperity increasingly based on branch plants acquired or established by firms centered elsewhere. Its concern is based on the proposition that having big-business corporate headquarters …

Fishing Is Not For Me, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Having been born and raised in Minnesota and now having lived nearly thirty years in Florida, I have spent most of my life on this planet in two of the fishingest states in the Union. Florida has almost as many bass fishermen as it does ways of taking money from tourists. Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, although in reality there are over 100,000 lakes in my home state.

C. William Pollard Papers
This brief speech served primarily as an introduction for Noel Tichy, the keynote speaker at a leadership forum hosted by the Economic Club in Chicago. In addition to this, Pollard takes the opportunity to note that successful business leadership is at its most basic level a "soul craft," one that prioritizes people over capital.

Sport And Society 3-4-98, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
This week I want to talk about the man who taught me a love of sport, and especially a love of baseball, and who taught me much about life.
Jackie Robinson, Richard C. Crepeau
Jackie Robinson, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
It has been the year to remember the achievements of Jackie Robinson both in and outside of baseball. Robinson's breaking of the color line had a social significance which transcended the game of baseball. At the season opener at Shea Stadium the President of the United States recognized Jackie Robinson, and the Acting Commissioner of Baseball retired Jackie's number for all of major league baseball. Radio and TV programs have examined the events of 1947, social commentators have recalled Robinson's contributions to American life, and baseball historians have paid their tributes to this remarkable man.

Vocal Response To Pain In Piglets, Daniel M. Weary, Leah A. Braithwaite, David Fraser
Vocal Response To Pain In Piglets, Daniel M. Weary, Leah A. Braithwaite, David Fraser
Farm Animal Welfare Collection
Three experiments were performed attempting to establish the validity of vocal measures as an indicator of the immediate response to pain in domestic piglets. Vocalisations were measured while piglets were subjected to the routine farm practice of castration without anaesthetic, or restrained identically but not castrated (i.e., sham-castrated). In Experiment 1 we measured how calling changed during the different stages of the procedure, and in Experiments 2 and 3 we measured the effect of different restraint techniques. Piglets that were castrated produced significantly more high frequency calls ( >1000 Hz) than sham castrates in all three experiments. In Experiment 1, …

Off-Farm Work By Census-Farm Operators: An Overview Of Structure And Mobility Patterns, Michael Swidinsky, Wayne H. Howard, Alfons Weersink
Agribusiness
The purpose of this paper is to provide descriptive statistics on off-farm labour supply and farm/off-farm labour reallocation for Canadian farmers using cross-sectional data and cross-sectional panel data, respectively, obtained from the Canadian Census of Agriculture. This report is part of a larger study on the off-farm labour supply and labour mobility of farm operators (Swidinsky, 1997). The data indicates that a growing proportion of operators worked off-farm between 1971 and 1991. As well, operators who work off-farm have allocated greater amounts of time to the off-farm labour market. The share of census-farm operators reporting 97-228 days of off-farm work …

A Philosophy Of Life And Work, C. William Pollard
C. William Pollard Papers
This speech -- delivered at the Wharton School of Business's (University of Pennsylvania) 1998 Zweig Executive Dinner Series -- outlines the rapid socio-economic changes prevalent at the end of the 20th century. In light of these, Pollard asks whether the corporation can be oriented to both maximizing profit and forming the moral character of those it employs.
