A Cross-Sectional Analysis Of The Determinants Of Corporate Share Repurchases, Kenneth M. Washer Jul 1998

A Cross-Sectional Analysis Of The Determinants Of Corporate Share Repurchases, Kenneth M. Washer

Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this study is to determine which motives play a significant role in determining the extent of a firm's repurchasing activity. For firms repurchasing through the open market, the motives include taking advantage of perceived undervaluation, increasing financial leverage, distributing cash to shareholders, and reducing agency costs. For firms using a tender offer, the motives include taking advantage of perceived undervaluation and having the ability to significantly increase financial leverage. Also, the hypothesis that the perceived undervaluation motive is stronger for smaller firms is tested. Three censored regression models are employed, and each model's explanatory variables represent commonly …

Generating Needed Modernization Funds: Streamlining The Bureaucracy--Not Outsourcing And Privatizing--Is The Best Solution, Jan P. Muczyk Jul 1998

Generating Needed Modernization Funds: Streamlining The Bureaucracy--Not Outsourcing And Privatizing--Is The Best Solution, Jan P. Muczyk

Faculty Publications

The Department of Defense (DoD) budget, in real dollars, has decreased for a dozen years or so, and will likely continue to do so. Since all the funds necessary for warfighting asset modernization will not come from Congress, DoD must free up existing funds for reallocation to its modernization program. So far, much reliance has been placed on privatization and outsourcing as ways of releasing large sums of money. But it is highly unlikely that these instrumentalities are up to the task, and other sources must shoulder a large part of the load. Although eliminating duplication of mission and roles …

Knowledge: The New Republic, K L Chopra Jul 1998

Knowledge: The New Republic, K L Chopra

IIMB Management Review

As the societies of the world have progressed from the spoken to the written medium, to the audiovisual and finally to the electronic media for communication, civilisations have undergone enormous changes. With the IT revolution, coupled with an era of globalised economics and commerce, 'knowledge' power, as K L Chopra puts it, will increasingly dominate the governance, social and economic structure and lifestyle of a nation. In this Republic of Knowledge, the 'knowledge worker', 'knowledge engineering' and 'knowledge factories' will play a pivotal role in determining its health and wealth. However, it remains to be seen whether the new Republic …

Meta-Ethnographic Development Of A Dialogue Methodology Applied To Organization Discourse, Shelley P. Gallup Jul 1998

Meta-Ethnographic Development Of A Dialogue Methodology Applied To Organization Discourse, Shelley P. Gallup

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A gap exists between theoretical stances that acknowledge the importance of dialogue as a dynamic within socially constructed structures, and "steersmanship" of those constructs--e.g., directing, intervening or transforming organizations. A "mechanism" which links theory with practice is missing, leaving practitioners with an acknowledgment of dialogue's central position, but without tools to enact this centrality in practice or research. This research constructs a conceptual model of dialogue, derived from the literature. Using this model as a base, the research seeks to generate a dialogue methodology bridging theory and practice with respect to organizational dialogue. The model, methodology, and research results are …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

THOMAS MATCHIE explores a spirituality rooted in goodness, an affirmation of faith and community across the fissures which sometimes separate us, not one expressed in cults, cant, and combat boots, as revealed in four novels set in the Midwest. Professor of English at North Dakota State University in Fargo, Matchie teaches American literature, including midwestem and multicultural authors. He has published numerous articles on the Great Plains, including works by Louise Erdrich, Thomas McGrath, and Lois Hudson. Interested in political issues, he has also served in the North Dakota Senate.

Factors Which Improve The Construct Validity Of Assessment Centers: A Review, Filip Lievens Jul 1998

Factors Which Improve The Construct Validity Of Assessment Centers: A Review, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This article reviews 21 studies which manipulated specific variables to determine their impact on the construct validity of assessment centers. This review shows that the studies regarding the impact of different observation, evaluation, and integration procedures yielded mixed results. Conversely, dimension factors (number, conceptual distinctiveness, and transparency), assessor factors (type of assessor and type of assessor training), and exercise factors (exercise form and use of role-players) were found to moderate construct validity. On the basis of the review, practical recommendations are derived to maximize the probability that practitioners design and administer an assessment center with construct validity. Finally, new perspectives …

Most of the focus on sport in the United States over the last week has been on the achievements of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls as they won their sixth NBA championship in eight years, their third consecutively. The discussion of this dynasty has been extensive, comparing it to the great Laker and Celtic teams of the past. Michael has emerged as an even larger figure both off and on the court with Fortune Magazine dubbing him the ten billion dollar man.

After watching Michael and the Bulls win a sixth NBA championship you can only come away with a sense of awe at what this team has done. In the process however one Bull doesn't get his due as a basketball player, although one hears and sees more than enough about him for his off-court activity.

Nba Draft, Richard C. Crepeau Jun 1998

Nba Draft, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The NBA draft has come and gone, once again leaving in its wake any number of questions about the future of the NBA and about those whom entered the draft process. But those questions can wait. This night of less than scintillating television looked very much like a glorified meat market presenting itself as a magical dream machine.
