Market Structure And Racial Earnings: Evidence From Job Changers, Richard U. Agesa, Jacqueline Agesa, Gary A. Hoover Jan 2001

Market Structure And Racial Earnings: Evidence From Job Changers, Richard U. Agesa, Jacqueline Agesa, Gary A. Hoover

Economics Faculty Research

In his seminal contribution, Gary Becker (1957) suggests that rents in noncompetitive industries provide employers with the latitude to engage in earnings discrimination. Implicit in this theory, is that white workers in noncompetitive industries would capture a disproportion ate share of monopoly rents (excessive wages) relative to their minority counterparts. We utilize wage-change equations to examine earnings shifts for whites and minorities stemming from a job switch to a different market structure. Additionally for each racial group, wage equations of workers before and after the job change are used to calculate difference in-differences estimates of wage change as a result …

The Social Embeddedness Of Transactions: Evidence From The Residential Real Estate Industry, Steve Sawyer, Kevin Crowston, Rolf T. Wigand, Marcel Allbritton Jan 2001

The Social Embeddedness Of Transactions: Evidence From The Residential Real Estate Industry, Steve Sawyer, Kevin Crowston, Rolf T. Wigand, Marcel Allbritton

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Information and communications technologies (ICT) are becoming pervasive in the residential real estate industry and affecting the work lives of real estate agents. Drawing on data from a regional study of the residential real-estate industry in the United States, we focus on the disintermediation or, more accurately, the re-intermediation of real estate agents in the sales process. We examine how real estate agents are (1) taking advantage of new ICT in their work, and (2) protecting themselves from others wishing to displace their position in the real estate value chain. Our analysis draws on two contrasting theoretical approaches to better …

Information And Communication Technologies In The Real Estate Industry: Results Of A Pilot Survey, Rolf T. Wigand, Kevin Crowston, Steve Sawyer, Marcel Allbritton

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

We have been studying the growing use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the residential real estate industry and the effects of this use on how realtors work. Earlier stages of our project involved qualitative research to develop a better understanding of the industry, the work of realtors and their use of ICT. In this paper we report on the results of qualitative research and a pilot of a survey intended to gather large-scale data on realtors and ICT use.

Harmonized Yet In Tune With The Local Conditions: An Investigation Of Global Advertising And The Inherent Challenges Of Reaching Broad Audiences Without Compromise, Alison Dye Jan 2001

Harmonized Yet In Tune With The Local Conditions: An Investigation Of Global Advertising And The Inherent Challenges Of Reaching Broad Audiences Without Compromise, Alison Dye

MA TESOL Collection

In the field of advertising communications on a global scale seems to be largely driven and pulled by current trends of thought. And often times pushed through the pipelines of transnational, networked agencies in search of speedy, cost-efficient and unified solutions. Certainly, reaching a broad audience with the most economical route is a real concern of companies today and will continue to be the case. I beckon brand bearers, concept developers and advertisers to merely dare to consider a more nuanced set of factors prior to spinning out global campaigns. Those elements include: inquiry into the true existence of a …

The Ethics Of Taxation, Fred Foldvary Jan 2001

The Ethics Of Taxation, Fred Foldvary

Faculty Publications

The judgment of taxation by ethical standards requires a universally applicable ethic. Such an ethic, natural moral law, can be derived using the Lockean framework based on equality. By this universal ethic, persons have property rights in their bodies and lives, and thus in their labor. The taxation of wages and of products of labor are therefore morally wrong. The equality premise, combined with the Lockean proviso on land, leads to the conclusion that public revenues may be justly obtained from the rental benefit of natural resources. Voluntary user fees and invasion penalties such as pollution charges are also morally …

Progress In Livestock Handling And Slaughter Techniques In The United States, 1970–2000, Temple Grandin Jan 2001

Progress In Livestock Handling And Slaughter Techniques In The United States, 1970–2000, Temple Grandin

State of the Animals 2001

Promoting better stockmanship is essential to improving animal welfare. Large meat-buying customers such as fast-food restaurants in the United States and supermarket chains in the United Kingdom can motivate great change by insisting that suppliers uphold better animal welfare standards. The greatest advances of the last thirty years have been the result of company audits. To maintain such progress, handling and stunning must be continually audited, measured, and managed. Handlers tend to revert to rough handling unless they are monitored and managed. An objective scoring system provides a standard that can be upheld. An overworked employee cannot do a good …

Farm Animals And Their Welfare In 2000, David Fraser, Joy Mench, Suzanne Millman Jan 2001

Farm Animals And Their Welfare In 2000, David Fraser, Joy Mench, Suzanne Millman

State of the Animals 2001

Farm animals have been a traditional concern of the modern animal protection movement. In the early 1800s, when the movement emerged as a significant sociopolitical force in the United Kingdom, its first priority was protection of farm animals, with particular emphasis on cattle and horses. Subsequently priorities changed, and throughout most of the 1900s, animal protectionism in Europe and the English-speaking world focused more strongly on the use of animals for scientific research and on the rescue of abandoned or ill-treated companion animals. Today, however, with vigorous public debate over animal agriculture and its effects, farm animals are re-emerging as …

Qualitative Assessment Of Animal Behaviour As An On-Farm Welfare-Monitoring Tool, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Alistair B. Lawrence Jan 2001

Qualitative Assessment Of Animal Behaviour As An On-Farm Welfare-Monitoring Tool, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Alistair B. Lawrence

Sentience Collection

There is a growing need to monitor the health and welfare of farm animals, and to develop methods which do so efficiently and reliably. A crucial problem with current methods is the integration of separate measurements taken during farm visits into accurate judgements of an animal’s overall welfare state. This paper proposes that the qualitative assessment of animal behaviour may serve as an integrative methodology which could guide the interpretation of other, more detailed welfare measurements. Recent research has demonstrated qualitative behaviour assessment to be reliable and repeatable under controlled experimental conditions. The paper concludes with a discussion of ways …

Tail Docking Dairy Cattle: Effects On Cow Cleanliness And Udder Health, Cassandra B. Tucker, David Fraser, Daniel M. Weary Jan 2001

Tail Docking Dairy Cattle: Effects On Cow Cleanliness And Udder Health, Cassandra B. Tucker, David Fraser, Daniel M. Weary

Farm Animal Husbandry Collection

To determine whether tail docking would influence cow cleanliness and udder health in a free-stall system, we monitored milking cows after half the animals in a herd were docked. A sample of 223 docked and 190 undocked cows (reducing to 169 and 105 over the study as cows were dried off) were monitored for 8 wk. Cow cleanliness was scored in two areas: along the spine, and the rump adjacent to the tail at 1, 2, 3, 5, and 8 wk after docking. Cleanliness was evaluated by counting squares that were soiled (0 to 14 on a 5- × 17.5-cm …

Integrating Traditional Research-Journal Based Sources With Trade And Web-Based Sources In Coursework, Kathy E. Clarke, Harry L. Reif Dr.

Libraries

Due to the rapidly changing nature of telecommunications, it is challenging to be able to introduce timely topics into this curriculum. At the same time, educators are challenged with preparing students to function in the workplace where change is a given, as on average workers spend an average of 9.25 hours per week looking for or analyzing data [4]. Initiatives to keep instruction relevant and prepare students to be information literate mandate that students be able to discover, digest, and put into context new information about technologies. This skill is developed and enhanced through the use of research projects. This …

Are There Rational Bubbles In The Us Stock Market? Overview And A New Test, A. (Tassos) G. Malliaris, Ramaprasad Bhar

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

A speculative bubble is usually defined as the difference between the market value of a security and its fundamental value. Although there are several important theoretical issues surrounding the topic of asset bubbles, the existence of bubbles is inherently an empirical issue that has not been settled yet. This paper reviews several important tests and offers one more methodology that improves upon the existing ones. The new test is applied to the annual US stock market data spanning over a century and at the monthly frequency covering the post-war period. Although we find evidence of stock price bubble in both …

Is The Federal Reserve Bank Stock Market Bubble-Neutral?, A. (Tassos) G. Malliaris, Marc D. Hayford

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper argues that the Fed was not stock market bubble-neutral during the last several years. This nonneutrality implies two options: first, the Fed has used monetary policies to prevent the building of the stock market bubble or, second, the Fed has contributed to its development and subsequent deflation. We supply representative quotes from the FOMC transcripts to establish that the Fed has paid significant attention to the valuation of the stock market. These quotes confirm that the stock market’s valuation was an important variable in the Fed’s decision-making and its conduct of monetary policy. We also conduct econometric modeling, …

Export Performance Of Malaysian Frozen Shrimp Industry Against Selected Asean Countries, Chai Fong Lim Jan 2001

Export Performance Of Malaysian Frozen Shrimp Industry Against Selected Asean Countries, Chai Fong Lim

Student Works (2000-2009)

The recent liberalisation of trade in A SEAN has promoted more regional trade in shrimp among the ASEAN countries as well as trade with countries outside the region. An important issue arising from the liberalisation of trade concerns the increased pressure of competition and direct rivalry among Malaysia and the other ASEAN countries for the export of shrimps in the international markets. This paper analyses the export performance and competitiveness of Malaysian frozen shrimp against three other ASEAN countries, that is Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand, in the Japanese market. Four different methods, namely constant market-share analysis, shift-share analysis, revealed …

Investigating Business Casual Dress Policies: Questionnaire Development And Exploratory Research, Timothy Franz, Norton Steven D.

Psychology Faculty/Staff Publications

This study had two primary goals: to develop a questionnaire that can be used to determine what types and categories of attire are acceptable in today’s work environment for men and women and to provide a preliminary test of whether these policies impact work attitudes and behavior. Because of the lack of past theory and research to guide the project, human resource professionals were interviewed to help generate ideas for questionnaire design. Once developed, this questionnaire was completed by 95 students, most of whom worked full- or part-time. Analyses revealed that there are clear trends and categories that can be …

The Impact Of Domestic Political Events On An Emerging Stock Market : The Case Of Indonesia, Herry Suhardjo Jan 2001

The Impact Of Domestic Political Events On An Emerging Stock Market : The Case Of Indonesia, Herry Suhardjo

Student Works (2000-2009)

This paper provides information regarding the effects of domestic political events on the Jakarta Stock Exchange. An event methodology is employed, and the results suggest that the market as a whole and the overall industries do not seem to respond to all political events. The results also indicate that there is no difference between the means of abnormal returns before and after the event. In general, the market as a whole and the overall industries behave in a similar manner. The change in signs (positive-negative) of abnormal returns suggests that the political condition in Indonesia was still unstable. The results …

Pentadbiran Dan Pembangunan Harta Wakaf Di Negeri Melaka, Sayuti Abd. Ghani Jan 2001

Pentadbiran Dan Pembangunan Harta Wakaf Di Negeri Melaka, Sayuti Abd. Ghani

Student Works (2000-2009)

In Islamic history, wakaf institution plays a viral role in building strong Islamic economy. However, lately wakaf institution is not being seen anymore as an institution that can solve economic problems of the Muslim society. This is due to unprofessional handling of wakaf properties where a lot of wakaf lands are being left undeveloped even though they are in a very strategic area. From the above statements, this dissertation will look in detail at the wakaf system in Islamic law as being provided in the al-Quran and Hadith and also from fiqh literature. This research also focuses on organisation and …

Ohio’S Competitive Advantage: Manufacturing Productivity, Edward W. Hill Jan 2001

Ohio’S Competitive Advantage: Manufacturing Productivity, Edward W. Hill

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

The underlying theme of Dr. Hill’s book is that manufacturing is the connective tissue of the state’s economy. This is true in two ways: The first is in terms of the distribution of employment, and the second connection is in locations of different parts of the manufacturing production process. The key to increasing incomes in all parts of Ohio is to ensure that the products made in manufacturing production platforms remain competitive, which means vigorously pursuing public policies that enhance productivity—investing in both labor and capital.
