Max Schmeling, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The death of Max Schmeling on Friday has been much commented upon over the past few days. I take this to be a recognition of the significance of this man and the memories he evokes around the world. For Americans these memories center on his relationship, both personal and athletic, with Joe Louis.

Economy Of Pakistan: An Overview, Ishrat Husain Dr. Feb 2005

Economy Of Pakistan: An Overview, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

Pakistan was one of the few developing countries that had achieved an average growth rate of over 5 percent over a four decade period ending 1988-89. Consequently, the incidence of poverty had declined from 40 percent to 18 percent by the end of the 1980s. Table I lays down the main economic and social indicators in 1947 and compare them with 2004. The overall picture that emerges from a dispassionate examination of these indicators is that of a country having made significant economic achievements but a disappointing record of social development. The salient features of Pakistan’s economic history are

Older Workers: Untapped Assets For Creating Value, Knowledge@Smu Feb 2005

Older Workers: Untapped Assets For Creating Value, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

The days when an executive could look forward to a leisurely retirement out on the golf course are over, thanks to a possible looming job shortage, a graying population, low savings rates and an insecure Social Security system. The impact of these factors on both workers and companies was the subject of the Symposium on Older Workers, co-sponsored recently by the AARP Global Aging Program along with Wharton's Center for Human Resources and Boettner Center for Pensions and Retirement Research. Speakers included AARP CEO William D. Novelli, Olivia Mitchell, executive director of Wharton's Pension Research Council, and Thomas Dowd, a …

Case Studies Of Local Boards And One-Stop Centers: Underutilization Of One-Stops By People With Significant Disabilities, Doris Hamner, Jaimie Ciulla Timmons Feb 2005

Case Studies Of Local Boards And One-Stop Centers: Underutilization Of One-Stops By People With Significant Disabilities, Doris Hamner, Jaimie Ciulla Timmons

Case Studies Series, Institute for Community Inclusion

The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) identifies individuals with disabilities as among the constituencies to be served by One-Stop Career Centers. Due to a variety of factors, including lack of an overall One-Stop data collection system, no clear way to identify disability in the system, and non-disclosure of disability by many customers, it is difficult to ascertain the exact level of One-Stop usage by people with disabilities. However, existing data sources and anecdotal evidence indicate that people with disabilities underutilize One-Stops. The number of people with disabilities that use One-Stops seems to be lower than what would be expected based on …

Case Studies Of Local Boards And One-Stop Centers: Levels Of Involvement Of State Vr Agencies With Other One-Stop Partners, Sheila Fesko, Doris Hamner

Case Studies Series, Institute for Community Inclusion

The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) emphasizes coordination and collaboration for better service delivery between state departments of Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) and other One-Stop partners. Although WIA's requirements for VR participation are clear, the parameters of this partnership are flexible and depend on a variety of factors within each state and local system. Defining the role of VR has had its challenges, as is the case for many partners in the WIA system. However, there are numerous examples of VR agencies working creatively to establish effective partnerships that positively influence services for job seekers with disabilities in the One-Stop system. The …

Case Studies Of Local Boards And One-Stop Centers: Strategies For Maximizing Staff Competence When Supporting Job Seekers With Disabilities In One-Stop Career Centers, Allison Cohen Hall, Sheila Fesko

Case Studies Series, Institute for Community Inclusion

Since states began implementing the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) of 1998, One-Stop Career Centers have had to address the challenges of serving all customers seeking services, including job seekers with disabilities. To meet this challenge, many local One-Stops have demonstrated commitment to and progress towards creating innovative practices that positively affect access for job seekers with disabilities in the workforce system. The following brief is offered as a tool for local workforce systems to help achieve meaningful employment outcomes for job seekers with disabilities. This brief is part of a series of products offering practical solutions for Local Workforce Investment …

Case Studies Of Local Boards And One-Stop Centers: Tackling Fiscal Issues, Heike Boeltzig, Allison Cohen Hall Feb 2005

Case Studies Of Local Boards And One-Stop Centers: Tackling Fiscal Issues, Heike Boeltzig, Allison Cohen Hall

Case Studies Series, Institute for Community Inclusion

The Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (WIA) established a network of One-Stop Career Centers by integrating different employment and training services into one comprehensive workforce investment system. Within this environment, One-Stop partners are mandated to collaborate to create a seamless service delivery system that enhances access to services and improves employment outcomes for all individuals, including those with disabilities. WIA's intent was to establish local workforce development systems that would respond to their areas' specific needs with unique solutions and creative partnerships. In addition to service delivery, WIA encourages One-Stop partners to share in the operating costs of the One-Stop …

Case Studies Of Local Boards And One-Stop Centers: Creative Involvement Of Community-Based Disability Organizations At One-Stop Career Centers, Jaimie Ciulla Timmons, Heike Boeltzig Feb 2005

Case Studies Of Local Boards And One-Stop Centers: Creative Involvement Of Community-Based Disability Organizations At One-Stop Career Centers, Jaimie Ciulla Timmons, Heike Boeltzig

Case Studies Series, Institute for Community Inclusion

The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) facilitates partnerships among organizations for more coordinated service delivery to all job seekers. Although the state Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency is the only disability agency or program that is a mandated partner under WIA, community-based disability organizations (CBOs) can also work with One-Stop Career Centers to enhance their capacity to support customers with disabilities. Through case study research, the Institute for Community Inclusion identified several models of involvement between CBOs and One-Stops. These models illustrate that organizations can be creative in developing their partner roles to meet the needs of both their staff and their …

Disproportionate Ownership Structure And Ipo Long-Run Performance Of Non-Soes In China, Xiaoming Wang, Jerry Cao, Jinghua Tang, Gary Gang Tian Feb 2005

Disproportionate Ownership Structure And Ipo Long-Run Performance Of Non-Soes In China, Xiaoming Wang, Jerry Cao, Jinghua Tang, Gary Gang Tian

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper examines the relationship between ownership structures and IPO long-run performance of non-SOEs in China. Although non-SOEs underperform the market in general after IPO but the poor performance is mainly caused by the IPOs with ownership control wedge. Non-SOEs with one share one vote structure outperform those with control-ownership wedge by 30% for three years post-IPO performance in adjusted buy-and-hold returns. Non-SOEs with control-ownership wedge have higher frequency of undertaking value-destroying related party transactions. These findings suggest that non-SOEs need to improve corporate governance such as disproportionate ownership structure to better safeguard the interest of long-run shareholders.

Investing In Real Estate: Mortgage Financing Practices And Optimal Holding Period, Winston T. H. Koh, Edward H. K. Ng Feb 2005

Investing In Real Estate: Mortgage Financing Practices And Optimal Holding Period, Winston T. H. Koh, Edward H. K. Ng

Research Collection School Of Economics

Real estate investments are typically characterized by high degrees of leverage and long loan tenures. In perfect capital markets, leverage has no impact on the investment decision apart from tax considerations. However, the mortgage financing market is imperfect in many countries. In the presence of market imperfections, an optimal holding period exists for real property investments. We provide a simple rule to calculate the optimal holding period is to compare the required rate of return with the leveraged rate of return on equity.

A Synopsis Of The Regulatory Environment Affecting California Specialty Crops, Sean P. Hurley Jan 2005

A Synopsis Of The Regulatory Environment Affecting California Specialty Crops, Sean P. Hurley

Agribusiness

California specialty crop producers face multiple regulatory bodies from both the state and federal government. These producers face regulations pertaining to labor, the environment, marketing, and food safety. When it comes to regulations, ignorance is not bliss. This project develops an informational source for finding federal and state regulations affecting California agricultural producers and provides a perspective of what the California agricultural regulatory environment looks like. This report presents a visual diagram of the top two tiers of federal and state governmental agencies affecting the California agricultural regulatory environment. The visual diagram is set-up with web links to these regulatory …

The Australian Open, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 2005

The Australian Open, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It is the week before the week before the Super Bowl. The beauty of the week is that there is no football, a relief after the emotional roller coaster of the three weeks of playoff football, ten games played at an intensity level worthy of brain surgery. It is a perfect time for a change of pace; the perfect time for a little tennis. Thus the Australian Open, the first grand slam event of the year, this year celebrating its 100th Anniversary.

Corporate Governance In The Financial Sector, Ishrat Husain Dr. Jan 2005

Corporate Governance In The Financial Sector, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

I would like to address the following four questions in my presentation this morning: (a) Why do we require Corporate Governance in the Financial Sector? (b) What does Good Governance Involve? (c) What has been done so far in Pakistan? (d) What are the Challenges Ahead? Why do we require Corporate Governance in the Financial Sector? Corporate Governance has become critical for all entities and, therefore, the codes of Corporate Governance or legislations are being adopted increasingly by the organized sectors in the developed and developing countries. However, there are some additional reasons that are unique to the financial sector …

Globalization - Challenges To Pakistan Economy: Role Of The State Bank Of Pakistan, Ishrat Hussain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

Globalization - The Phenomena: Presently the term "Globalization" has gained an emotive tinge. Few believe it as an inevitable and irreversible process that will catapult future world economic development; others discern it with antagonism and fear that it will thwart social progress in the context of developing countries, creating enhanced disparity within and between nations, creating unemployment and poorer living standards.

Sport And War Don't Mix, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 2005

Sport And War Don't Mix, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The Army-Navy football game this year opened when the President of the United States tossed a coin brought in from Fallujah for the ceremony. Much to my surprise there was little comment on the coin, or the story of what led to it being chosen for such an honor. Clearly what we have here is another mixing of the idols of war and the idols of the playing field, a potent mix in many quarters. Teddy Roosevelt found football appealing as a candidate to serve as James' "Moral Equivalent of War," as have many others over the past century. He …

The Ncaa Winter Meetings, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 2005

The Ncaa Winter Meetings, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Early January following the conclusion of the money collection phase of college football season comes the time when the NCAA holds its annual meetings. This invariably results in a deluge of unreality from the President of the benighted organization and some futile gestures of reform flowing from the meeting halls. Meanwhile in the corridors and backrooms the real work of protecting and expanding the revenue streams proceeds unimpeded.

New Year's Nonsense, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 2005

New Year's Nonsense, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

As the calendar turns over from 2004 to 2005 we are back where we were a year ago with the BCS. Once again the "C" has been removed. At the end of the regular season there were five undefeated college football teams. In the meticulously constructed world of the BCS only two of those five teams played each other in bowl games negating the claim of a national championship although there certainly is a BCS champion.

Investor Risk Aversion And The Weekend Effect: The Basics, Michael T. Young

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

This paper provides an explanation of the continued persistence of the weekend effect. Using the 23 non-holiday Wednesday closings of 1968 as a benchmark, it is postulated that negative Monday returns can be explained by risk averse investors reacting to the arrival of new information.

Some Evidence Concerning The Economic Value Of Software Portability: A Real Options Approach, Dean L. Johnson, Brent J. Levkin, James E. Northey Jan 2005

Some Evidence Concerning The Economic Value Of Software Portability: A Real Options Approach, Dean L. Johnson, Brent J. Levkin, James E. Northey

College of Business Publications

Software development typically involves a large capital outlay for an asset with a highly uncertain useful life. A reduction in the degree of uncertainty is likely to have a significant impact upon the expected value of an application. One method for reducing uncertainty is to incorporate modularity (e.g. a portability layer) when the application is first developed. The inclusion of such a layer involves an additional development cost. Using a real options approach we estimate the value of the flexibility that such portability confers. We use sensitivity analysis to examine the relationship between value of portability and changes in factors …

La Alianza Cubano-Venezolana:¿”Neobolivarianismo Emancipador” O Expansión Del Totalitarismo?, Hernán Yánez

Institute for Cuban & Cuban-American Studies Occasional Papers

The Cuba-Venezuela Alliance: “Emancipatory Neo-Bolivarismo” Or Totalitarian Expansion?, Hernán Yánez

Institute for Cuban & Cuban-American Studies Occasional Papers

This study examines the background as well as the ideological foundations underpinning the Cuba-Venezuela alliance. Castro and Chavez are now trying to consolidate a new political axis in Latin America, funded by Chavez’ oil diplomacy. Similarities with the Cuban experiment are highlighted, as well as Castro’s collaboration with the leadership of the Movimiento Revolucionario Bolivariano-MBR 200. The various dimensions of the cooperation between Venezuela and Cuba are explored, with emphasis on its political objectives and impact on each country. Following are some of the main conclusions of the study:

• Venezuela is providing in excess of 90,000 barrels of petroleum …

Garbage-In, Garbage-Out: Item Generation As A Threat To Construct Validity, Terri A. Scandura Phd, Lucy R. Ford

Management Faculty Articles and Papers

Item generation has received only cursory attention in the research literature, despite the fact that it seems obvious that poorly written items will result in poor psychometric properties of measures. In this paper, we review the literature on item generation, develop a typology of threats to construct validity, and evaluate five commonly used
organizational research measures with respect to typology. Our results demonstrate that the sampled measures have significant problems that may represent threats to construct validity. recommendations for improved item generation practice are offered.
