History Of Libraries In The Islamic Period, Aam Slamet Rusydiana, Aisyah As-Salafiyah, Dewi Rahmi
History Of Libraries In The Islamic Period, Aam Slamet Rusydiana, Aisyah As-Salafiyah, Dewi Rahmi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The purpose of this study is to chart the evolution of libraries in Islamic civilization from the period of the Khulafaur-Rashidun to the Ottoman Caliphate. Using a qualitative historical approach, this study delves into the history of Islamic libraries throughout various periods of Islamic authority. The findings of this study reveal that the development of Islamic library civilization can be separated into numerous distinct phases, some of which correspond to the caliphate period. Almost all libraries in the Islamic era were waqf-based. This study is divided into thirteen periods, with each period explaining the history of Islamic libraries through a …

Defining And Detecting Toxicity On Social Media: Context And Knowledge Are Key, Amit Sheth, Valerie Shalin, Ugur Kursuncu
Defining And Detecting Toxicity On Social Media: Context And Knowledge Are Key, Amit Sheth, Valerie Shalin, Ugur Kursuncu
Publications
As the role of online platforms has become increasingly prominent for communication, toxic behaviors, such as cyberbullying and harassment, have been rampant in the last decade. On the other hand, online toxicity is multi-dimensional and sensitive in nature, which makes its detection challenging. As the impact of exposure to online toxicity can lead to serious implications for individuals and communities, reliable models and algorithms are required for detecting and understanding such communications. In this paper We define toxicity to provide a foundation drawing social theories. Then, we provide an approach that identifies multiple dimensions of toxicity and incorporates explicit knowledge …
Growth In Confidence And Search For Belonging: A Case Study Of Muslim Student Experience At An American College, Amir Duric
Muslim Student Life
The broader perception of Muslim Student Association (MSA) in the wider society is not always positive. It is often viewed as a conservative organization where all members need to be a specific type of Muslim to fit in or a political space influenced by a foreign group or ideology. Because of this I studied the group, and my findings challenge this view drawing from the semester-long fieldwork, participant observations, and four in-depth interviews with MSA members at Salt City University (SCU). Data collected shows how the group and its members and the broader Muslim community on campus made Muslim students …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Talking about improving human resources, the library occupies a very urgent role. This is in line with Law Number 43 of 2007 concerning Libraries, especially Article 3, which states that the library functions as a vehicle for education, research, preservation, information, and recreation to increase the intelligence and empowerment of the nation. A librarian, as explained in Article 1 paragraph (8) of Law No. 43 of 2007 on Libraries, is someone who has competence obtained through education and/or training and has duties and responsibilities to carry out library management and services. This study aims to find out the development map …
Stoicism And Just War Theory, Leonidas D. Konstantakos
Stoicism And Just War Theory, Leonidas D. Konstantakos
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The ancient philosophy of Stoicism, itself one of the foundations for international law, can improve contemporary just war thinking by forming a coherent set of philosophical principles to serve as a foundation for a just war theory. A Stoic approach considers justifications for moral actions to come not from an appeal to human rights, conformity to deontological rules, or from the utility of the actions themselves, but from virtuous character traits and corresponding virtuous actions. As such, a Stoic approach to just war theory is a virtue ethics perspective in which metaethical incentive for moral action is the agent’s own …

Campus Poetry Walk: (Re)Creating And Reconnecting A Community (Presentation), Lisa Villa
Staff publications
In January 2020, the Outreach and Engagement Team at the College of the Holy Cross began preparing a poetry walk, which was reconfigured to a social media “poetry event” due to COVID-19. With the anticipated return of students to campus for the Spring 2021 semester and a need for the community (especially students) to have recreational opportunities that were safe, socially distanced and preferably outside, the Team attempted for a second time to plan a poetry walk. CrossWorks, the institutional repository for the College, was a part of this plan from the beginning. Foremost, CrossWorks would support the scholarly and …

It’s an honor to be in the Honors Scholars Program and have the opportunity to share a special project that resonates with who I am as a person and to the DACA community. DREAMER is a publication that showcases Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. Not only will the magazine talk about the history of DACA, but it will also include the creator’s story, other DACA recipients’ stories, exclusive interviews, resources, and visuals. The name “DREAMER” is simple and short. DACA recipients are know as DREAMERS; we have dreams like everyone else. Every month we release new content that is based …
