UNL Libraries: White Papers

On numerous occasions over the course of the UNL Libraries’ continuing discussions concerning the allocation of collections monies, the UNL Libraries’ liaison librarians have made a variety of assertions, arguments, and claims concerning their patrons and their patrons’ needs. For example, the humanities librarians have repeatedly staked a claim to the humanities’ being the “book” discipline and have made a variety of assertions concerning humanities patrons and humanities books that could be treated as testable hypothesis.

For example:

1) Humanities patrons use books more than do other disciplines’ patrons;

2) Humanities patrons use more books than do other disciplines’ patrons; …

Book Piracy And The Challenge Of Saving Nigeria's Publishing Industry, Momoh Emmanuel Omeiza, Folorunso Abubakar Lanre Feb 2019

Book Piracy And The Challenge Of Saving Nigeria's Publishing Industry, Momoh Emmanuel Omeiza, Folorunso Abubakar Lanre

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Book piracy has been an issue trending in the Nigerian publishing space recently. This is because of the ripple effects of the action on both publishers and authors alike. This action has over the years been a bottle neck for publishers and authors in achieving their aim of reaching out to the public and making sales from their respective publications.

In the light of this, this study seeks to explain certain reasons why this action has not been effectively nipped in the bud as well as the pandemic effects of this situation.

Conclusively, the study would suggest some of the …

Reprographic Services: Availability And Effective Accessibility Of University Library Materials By Students In Enugu State University Of Science And Technology, Delight Udochukwu

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Adequate resources in Libraries are not an indication of a good or well-organized Library, as availability of resources does not guarantee full accessibility. Many a time, users of University Libraries find it difficult to effectively access and reproduce the available resources in the library, owing to either complete absence or shortage of reprographic facilities, which as a matter of fact, is of great concern. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of reprographic services in enhancing the availability and accessibility of library resources to students in University Libraries, a case study of Enugu State University of Science …

Understanding The Role Of Institutional Repository In Digital Preservation In Academic Libraries: A Review Of Literature, O. P. Saini

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

One of the leading objectives of the libraries is to provide the latest and timely information to its clientele and keep them updated with the new arrivals related to their subject areas. However, a limited storage capacity of libraries is throwing a challenge before librarians from the beginning of libraries. The latest developments in the libraries for information management, preservation, and dissemination involve a high rate of computer technologies. Institutional Repository (IR) is a new breed which has the potential to store any amount of information in little space and preserve it for a long-term perspective. Therefore, many of the …

Nebraska Intellectual Freedom Manual, Round Table On Intellectual Freedom, Nebraska Library Association, Michael J. Elsener, Sue Ann Gardner, K. Joan Birnie, Karen Drevo, Brenda Ealey, Timothy Lentz, Todd Schlechte

Zea E-Books Collection

Much has changed in libraries and society since the publication of the 2004 revision of the Nebraska Library Association Intellectual Freedom Manual. The consensus of the current members of the Nebraska Library Association round table on Intellectual Freedom (NLA IF) was not to just revise the former manual, but to create an entirely new edition. In doing so, the authors have addressed a number of new issues. The intention was to keep it relatively brief but still useful. Readers should be able to read sections independent of one another for quick reference on topics of interest. For readers of …

Data Management Plan Example And Feedback, Deeann Allison, Kiyomi D. Deards, Jennifer L. Thoegersen

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Conference Presentations and Speeches

A good DMP plan was concise and easy to follow. Writers should not be afraid to take up the maximum allowed space when necessary to explain things so that the reviewers don’t have to think hard/look something up. Below are examples of feedback a consultant might give when reviewing a data management plan. These examples may be used and altered as necessary to fit a variety of situations. The feedback has been divided into three categories: Defining Terms, Details, Data, and Human Research Subject Data.

The Advice Not Taken: How One Repository Found Its Own Path, Paul Royster

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Conference Presentations and Speeches

Managers of institutional repositories are offered much advice, from national organizations (like SPARC) and promoters of movements like Open Access or products like Creative Commons licenses. This presentation is about how Nebraska's IR has succeeded despite not following the advice offered by experts, publishing consultants, and "thought leaders" in scholarly communications.

The advice generally offered includes: 1.Use open source software 2.Expect faculty to self-archive 3.Seek campus “mandate” or deposit policy 4.Promote author-rights addendum 5.Provide funds for gold OA fees 6.Participate in Open Access events 7.Promote Creative Commons licenses 8.Require peer review for original publishing and 9.Assign all possible identifiers.

Instead, …

Metadata For A Web Archive: Premis And Xmp As Tools For The Task, Laurentia Romaniuk Feb 2014

Metadata For A Web Archive: Premis And Xmp As Tools For The Task, Laurentia Romaniuk

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

In a time where websites are ever changing, what metadata standards and tools are best for ensuring that web archive objects (such as snapshots of websites) are readable for users of the future? Can the evolution of web interfaces be documented? Initiatives that explore these questions already exist such as the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine (which stores source code from websites along with images); however, other archive building solutions are also available but have yet to be explored. The field of digital asset management (DAM), for example, has long examined how assets (digital files) are stored, organized, retrieved, and preserved. …

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

This study compares the relationship of four university libraries with their institutions’ data management policies, services, resources, and plans for the future. It combines an examination of public documentation and services advertised by the universities and their libraries with interviews of librarians involved with data management. Four members of the Association of Public and Land- Grant Universities of similar size were selected for comparison: Iowa State University, Oklahoma State University, Kansas State University, and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The study identifies how and why campus collaborations were created and describes possible next steps for expanding or refining existing data management …

The C. Y. Thompson (CYT) Library enjoys a location central to east campus. This creates an ideal setting for CYT to serve as a hub for activities of all kinds. And, based upon the feedback from online surveys and face-to-face focus groups, there is no shortage of interest and ideas for how CYT can become the premier gathering place on UNL’s east campus for users from all backgrounds. In spite of this, the primary question needing to be addressed is ‘what is C. Y. Thompson’? Is it a building? Is it a library? Is it something entirely different? The task …

Archiving & Records Management Perspectives On Electronic-Only Publications For Nomenclature, Sue Ann Gardner Dec 2009

Archiving & Records Management Perspectives On Electronic-Only Publications For Nomenclature, Sue Ann Gardner

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

I fully support the establishment of taxonomic names in electronic-only publications and would like to make some recommendations based on my professional experience in archival sciences, as a Scholarly Communications Librarian. The proposed amendment to the Code needs only to be explicit in what is required of authors and publishers for electronic-only publication, and all contingencies can be covered. In this generation we have one foot in the world of paper and the other now firmly planted in the electronic realm. This special position will be relatively short-lived, and we would be doing a great service to our successors if …
