The Role Of Error Analysis In Teaching And Learning Of Second And Foreign Language, Agsa Jabeen, Bahram Kazemian, Muhammad Shahbaz Mustafai

Bahram Kazemian

The aim of this paper is to investigate errors made by second and foreign language (L2) learners so as to understand the strategies and techniques used in the process of second and foreign language learning. Error analysis is a very important area of applied linguistics as well as of second and foreign language learning. It is also a systematic method to analyze learners' errors. Errors are not always bad, rather they are crucial parts and aspects in the process of learning a language. They may provide insights into the complicated processes of language development as well as a systematic way …

An Investigation Of Nominalization And Lexical Density In Undergraduate Research Proposals, Thu Ha T. Nguyen, Emily C. Edwards

Bahram Kazemian

Academic writing is considered an essential skill for academic success not only for undergraduate study but also for students’ further education and professional development. This writing genre has certain characteristics often lacking in students’ research writing. This study explores two characteristics in students’ research proposals, nominalization and lexical density (LD), after the students completed courses on academic writing and Second Language Research (SLR) in their second year at a Vietnamese pedagogical university. It also investigates the effectiveness of writing training in increasing students’ performance regarding the use of given features. The findings, obtained from analyzing students’ proposals and recorded interviews, …

Foreign Language Assessments And Interpretive Communication: A Literacy-Based Perspective, Kate Paesani Jan 2015

Foreign Language Assessments And Interpretive Communication: A Literacy-Based Perspective, Kate Paesani

Kate Paesani

This presentation proposes a reconceptualization of interpretive communication through the lens of foreign language (FL) literacy and the multiliteracies framework. The communicative modes and multiliteracies frameworks are similar because they suggest curricular goals for FL programs grounded in cultural content and adopt a broad understanding of communication in which language modalities are overlapping. They differ because the multiliteracies framework additionally outlines a pedagogical approach that puts into practice goals, content, and communication and foregrounds texts as the core content of FL courses. Indeed, the literacy-based learning processes of interpretation, collaboration, problem solving, and reflection expand our understanding of how learners …

Aligning Goals, Objectives, And Assessments: A Multiliteracies Perspective, Kate Paesani, Heather Willis Allen Nov 2014

Aligning Goals, Objectives, And Assessments: A Multiliteracies Perspective, Kate Paesani, Heather Willis Allen

Kate Paesani

In this session, we show how goals, objectives, and assessments in introductory foreign language (FL) programs can be articulated to reflect principles of the multiliteracies framework. Using the backward design model, we consider how to create instructional goals that reflect linguistic, cognitive, and sociocultural dimensions of literacy and how to align objectives with principles of interpretation, collaboration, problem solving, and reflection. We further argue that to effectively measure objectives, assessments should view language and literacy broadly, be multidimensional, and link clearly to teaching and learning. This literacy-based approach thus represents a shift away from the emphasis on acquisition of language …

Sequencing The Presentation Of Grammar Items To Attract Student Interest, Arshad Abd Samad Oct 2014

Sequencing The Presentation Of Grammar Items To Attract Student Interest, Arshad Abd Samad

Arshad Abd Samad

The teaching of grammar is a challenging task as teachers need to present technical information about the language in such a way that would interest and attract the attention of students. In addition to the lesson itself, the presentation sequence of grammatical items as in the grammar syllabus can also influence how well students respond. Teachers often decide to present and focus on grammatical items to beginner, intermediate and advanced level students based on criteria such as level of difficulty and order of acquisition. Biber (1998), however, proposed that grammar should be presented according to narrative, informational and interactive text …

Translation Of Legal Texts Between Arabic And English: The Case Study Of Marriage Contracts, Mohammed H. Al Aqad Jul 2014

Translation Of Legal Texts Between Arabic And English: The Case Study Of Marriage Contracts, Mohammed H. Al Aqad

Mohammed H. M. Al Aqad

Over decades, there used to be a number of studies on Legal translation since it was one of the most challenging issues for translators and it still a critical and authoritative translation produced by legal bodies. Actually, translating legal texts might raise some problems in translation pertaining to the differences between the Source and Target Texts. Thus, it can result in a certain amount of ambiguity with respect to the legal texts, as it belongs to people‟s beliefs and cultures. This study investigates the quality of the translated message from Arabic into English. Hence, the focus is on the changes …

Nominalizations In Scientific And Political Genres: A Systemic Functional Linguistics Perspective, Bahram Kazemian, Somayyeh Hashemi Mar 2014

Nominalizations In Scientific And Political Genres: A Systemic Functional Linguistics Perspective, Bahram Kazemian, Somayyeh Hashemi

Bahram Kazemian

Language, science and politics go together and learning these genres is to learn a language created for codifying, extending and conveying scientific and political knowledge. Grammatical metaphor is divided into two broad areas: ideational and interpersonal. This article focuses on the first type of grammatical metaphor, i.e. the ideational one, which includes process types and nominalization. The principal objective of the current work is to analyze a corpus comprising 10 scientific and 10 political texts. The Ideational Grammatical Metaphor framework was used to carry out an analysis on these texts to pinpoint their similarities and dissimilarities. The analysis indicates that …

The nature of English in Malaysia and across Southeast Asia is highly diverse and variable and …

American Sign Language As A Heritage Language, Sarah Compton Jan 2014

American Sign Language As A Heritage Language, Sarah Compton

Sarah Compton

This chapter considers how American Sign Language (ASL)—a visual-manual language—is a heritage language of deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing people in the United States. Traditionally, heritage language education and maintenance efforts have centered on spoken languages. This chapter aims to broaden the scope to include signed languages. It begins with a historical overview of ASL, explicates for whom ASL is a heritage language, and examines the influence of current policy trends and technological advancements on language shift and language maintenance. Particular attention is drawn to the role of deaf communities in fostering language maintenance despite concerted efforts to restrict …

Quantifying The Development Of Phraseological Competence In L2 English Writing: An Automated Approach, Yves Bestgen, Sylviane Granger Jan 2014

Quantifying The Development Of Phraseological Competence In L2 English Writing: An Automated Approach, Yves Bestgen, Sylviane Granger

Yves Bestgen

Based on the large body of research that shows phraseology to be pervasive in language, this study aims to assess the role played by phraseological competence in the development of L2 writing proficiency and text quality assessment. We propose to use CollGram, a technique that assigns to each pair of contiguous words (bigrams) in a learner text two association scores (mutual information and t-score) computed on the basis of a large reference corpus, the Corpus of Contemporary American English. Applied to the Michigan State University Corpus of second language writing, CollGram shows a longitudinal decrease in the use of collocations …

Rethinking The Role Of Language And Literary-Cultural Content In Advanced Learning Contexts (Invited Plenary), Kate Paesani Apr 2013

Rethinking The Role Of Language And Literary-Cultural Content In Advanced Learning Contexts (Invited Plenary), Kate Paesani

Kate Paesani

As has long been argued in applied linguistics research, undergraduate students entering advanced-level foreign language (FL) courses in U.S. institutions of higher education do not possess advanced-level language abilities (Byrnes & Maxim, 2004; Maxim, 2009). This gap is due to a number of factors, including the well-known and well-documented language-literature divide present in many collegiate FL programs (MLA, 2007); the nature of many advanced content courses wherein there is little explicit focus on language development (Donato & Brooks, 2004; Mantero, 2002; Polio & Zyzik, 2009; Zyzik & Polio, 2008); and a dearth of coherent frameworks for organizing curriculum and instruction …

Transitioning To English-Only In A University Intensive English Program: A Phenomenological Study, Alan Broomhead Jan 2013

Transitioning To English-Only In A University Intensive English Program: A Phenomenological Study, Alan Broomhead

Alan Broomhead

This qualitative research study investigated how students in university English as a Second Language (ESL) programs experience the transition to English-only methodology. When students move from English as a foreign language (EFL) contexts, where the first language is usually integral to teaching and learning, to university English as a second language (ESL) programs in the U.S., they may encounter a significant difference in the approach to teaching, an approach which excludes reference to their first language and obliges them to use only English. While the question of the first language (L1) in second language teaching and learning has been explored …

Maximizing Classification Accuracy In Native Language Identification, Scott Jarvis, Yves Bestgen, Steve Pepper Jan 2013

Maximizing Classification Accuracy In Native Language Identification, Scott Jarvis, Yves Bestgen, Steve Pepper

Yves Bestgen

This paper reports our contribution to the 2013 NLI Shared Task. The purpose of the task was to train a machine-learning system to identify the native-language affiliations of 1,100 texts written in English by nonnative speakers as part of a high-stakes test of gen- eral academic English proficiency. We trained our system on the new TOEFL11 corpus, which includes 11,000 essays written by nonnative speakers from 11 native-language backgrounds. Our final system used an SVM classifier with over 400,000 unique features consisting of lexical and POS n-grams occur- ring in at least two texts in the training set. Our system …

Assessment Practices In The Post-Communicative Era: A Multiliteracies Perspective, Heather Willis Allen, Beatrice Dupuy, Kate Paesani Jan 2013

Assessment Practices In The Post-Communicative Era: A Multiliteracies Perspective, Heather Willis Allen, Beatrice Dupuy, Kate Paesani

Kate Paesani

Although numerous integrated approaches to foreign language teaching and learning have emerged during the “post-communicative era,” assessment practices have not kept pace with changes reflected within these approaches. Assessment practices often remain form-focused, oriented toward isolated language competencies, and devoid of focus on expression or interpretation of meaning. Yet, as Kern (2000) stated, “what is evaluated constitutes the de facto curriculum and how it is evaluated reflects the de facto philosophy of learning and teaching” (p. 267). In other words, when assessment practices focus on forms and isolated skills while lacking a focus on meaningful communication, instructors see mastery of …

Trends emerging from this research and areas for future inquiry will be addressed.

Reading Literature To Develop Advanced Writing Competencies: A Multiliteracies-Based Approach, Kate Paesani Jan 2013

Reading Literature To Develop Advanced Writing Competencies: A Multiliteracies-Based Approach, Kate Paesani

Kate Paesani

This presentation considers how a multiliteracies-based approach to teaching literary texts (Cope & Kalantzis, 2009; Kern, 2000; New London Group, 1996) can facilitate development of advanced foreign language writing competencies. Specifically, we explore how this approach deepens students’ understanding of the linguistic, stylistic, and cultural content of literature; underscores the complementarity of reading and writing; promotes connections between language and literary-cultural content; and encourages reflection about the role of textual interpretation and production in students’ linguistic development. Discussion of creative writing and journal assignments based on the analysis of literary texts within the context of advanced grammar and composition courses …

Positioning Of Volunteer Interpreters In The Field Of Public Service Interpreting In Spanish Hospitals: A Bourdieusian Perspective, Maria A. Aguilar-Solano Jun 2012

Positioning Of Volunteer Interpreters In The Field Of Public Service Interpreting In Spanish Hospitals: A Bourdieusian Perspective, Maria A. Aguilar-Solano

Maria Aguilar-Solano

This thesis sets out to investigate the field of public service interpreting in southern Spain, with a particular emphasis on the position of volunteer interpreters working at two different healthcare institutions. It looks at the power relationships that develop between agents that hold different degrees of control and autonomy, especially in a context where individuals hold different forms and volume of capital in each encounter. Drawing on Bourdieu’s Theory of Practice, the study offers an in-depth examination of a group of volunteer interpreters as legitimate agents of the wider field of public service interpreting and the sub-field of healthcare interpreting, …

Deaf Education Policy As Language Policy: A Comparative Analysis Of Sweden And The United States, Sarah Compton Jan 2012

Deaf Education Policy As Language Policy: A Comparative Analysis Of Sweden And The United States, Sarah Compton

Sarah Compton

The present study offers a cross-national, comparative analysis of Swedish and US deaf education policies to examine the ways in which status planning and acquisition planning for sign languages are taken up. Major policy documents were selected from each polity, reflecting key national legislative policies as well as the primary texts that guide educational implementation: for Sweden, the Ordinance for Special Schools, the Education Act, and the national syllabi for special schools; for the United States, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Title 34 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Analysis of these texts shows that such planning tends …

After outlining the framework, presenters discuss its implementation in a second-semester course, provide sample instructional materials, and consider additional applications of the model and directions for future curricular reform.

Polish Word Sketches, Adam Radziszewski, Adam Kilgarriff, Robert Lew Nov 2011

Polish Word Sketches, Adam Radziszewski, Adam Kilgarriff, Robert Lew

Robert Lew

Word sketches are one-page automatic, corpus-based summaries of a word's grammatical and collocational behaviour. They were first used in the production of the Macmillan English Dictionary (Rundell 2002). At that point, word sketches only existed for English. Today, the Sketch Engine is available, a corpus tool which takes as input a corpus of any language and corresponding grammar patterns and which generates word sketches for the words of that language. It also automatically generates a thesaurus and 'sketch differences', which specify similarities and differences between near-synonyms. A web corpus of Polish was morpho-syntactically tagged and loaded into the Sketch Engine. …

Student Perceptions Of The Role Of Literacy-Oriented Activities In Grammatical Development, Kate Paesani Jan 2011

Student Perceptions Of The Role Of Literacy-Oriented Activities In Grammatical Development, Kate Paesani

Kate Paesani

Over the past decade, literacy-oriented instruction has emerged as a potential solution to the language-literature divide that has plagued foreign language programs, and a body of research regarding literacy-based practices and text-based curricular reform now exists (e.g., Allen, 2009; Byrnes & Sprang, 2004; Kern, 2000; Swaffar & Arens, 2005). Within this line of research, literacy is conceived of more broadly than reading and writing; literacy entails the complex and contextually sensitive relationships among readers, writers, texts, culture, and language (Kern & Schultz, 2005). In spite of its popularity, few empirical studies describing the feasibility or outcomes of literacy-oriented instruction exists. …

Developing Foreign Language Literacy Through Literature, Kate Paesani Jan 2011

Developing Foreign Language Literacy Through Literature, Kate Paesani

Kate Paesani

This talk explores the role of literature in the foreign language curriculum and its contribution to students’ foreign language literacy by first establishing a working definition of literature and identifying goals of literature instruction at all levels. Next, to facilitate integration of literature across the foreign language curriculum and bridge the gap between the more language-oriented goals of lower level courses and the more content-oriented goals of upper level courses, a multiliteracies approach to literature instruction is proposed. Within this approach, literacy is defined broadly to include the complex and contextually sensitive linkages among readers, writers, texts, culture, and language …

Exploring The Boundaries: Attitudinal Autonomy In Healthcare Interpreting, Maria A. Aguilar-Solano Jul 2010

Exploring The Boundaries: Attitudinal Autonomy In Healthcare Interpreting, Maria A. Aguilar-Solano

Maria Aguilar-Solano

Patients who visit hospitals on the southern coast of Spain range from social immigrants such as tourists and EU expatriate residents to economic immigrants from less developed countries. Both groups have in common their lack of ability to communicate in Spanish. However, while for the first group qualified interpreters are easily accessed, for the second there is a lack of them. As a result, healthcare interpreters must deal with many different agents and an ever-changing social context as regards the power relations that are constantly emerging between doctors and patients. This divergence affects the way interpreters are perceived by healthcare …
