Patients who visit hospitals on the southern coast of Spain range from social immigrants such as tourists and EU expatriate residents to economic immigrants from less developed countries. Both groups have in common their lack of ability to communicate in Spanish. However, while for the first group qualified interpreters are easily accessed, for the second there is a lack of them. As a result, healthcare interpreters must deal with many different agents and an ever-changing social context as regards the power relations that are constantly emerging between doctors and patients. This piece responds to TESOL's position statement on the linguistic rights of deaf students to develop proficiency in both native signed and spoken languages. The statement lays a foundation upon which both English language teaching professionals and deaf education practitioners can build a partnership to advocate for deaf students’ linguistic rights and promote multilingual education programs for deaf students and all learners of English.

Several studies have examined the interconnection between discourse contexts and structural form. Chaudron and Parker (1990), for example, investigated the structural form used to encode the referent subject Noun Phrase in new, known, and current discourse contexts. These three contexts relate to when a new referent is used as the topic of a discourse, when a known referent is used as the topic and when there is continued reference to the topic after it has been established in the discourse. In teaching grammar, teachers often are faced with the dilemma of either emphasising the formal properties of the language or its meaning aspect. One of the more popular language teaching approaches of the last three decades has been the communicative approach. This approach has had a signifi cant impact on the teaching of grammar as its objective of communicative competence has led to a diminished role for grammar teaching. The 2007 MLA report recommends eliminating the bifurcation of FL departments because it impedes departmental coherence. Yet, the report does not address how to train graduate students to implement its recommendations. This paper considers graduate student teacher training in light of the report, identifies key issues and suggests possible solutions.
