This volume is the first in a series to be published on the archaeology, history and ethnohistory of the Choke Canyon Reservoir area in southern Texas. Intensive, coordinated cultural resource investigations have been underway in the reservoir basin since 1977, under the terms of Contract No. 7-07-50-V0897 (Nueces River Project), between the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio and the Water and Power. Two sites in McCulloch County, Texas, Sites 41MK28 and 41MK29, were tested in August, 1981, and were found to have very shallow of surface deposits. Site 41MK28 proved to be a badly eroded surface site. That portion of Site 41MK29 which lay in the proposed right-of-way was found to be already destroyed by previous root plowing and fire lane construction activities. Further excavation is not recommended at either site because of the disturbed nature of the sites and the lack of depth to the deposits.

The Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted an intensive surface survey aimed at location and evaluation of cultural resources in portions of the Choke Canyon Reservoir in Live Oak and McMullen Counties, Texas. The survey was conducted between May and September 1979. The area examined consists of approximately 8400 acres (3400 hectares) located in areas not previously available for survey. A total of 94 archaeological sites, 86 low density scatters, and 20 isolated finds was recorded. This total includes 16 historic sites or. site components and 14 sites containing Late Prehistoric materials. The remaining …

This monograph reports the findings made during the summer of 1977 of test

excavations and/or surface collections at 17 prehistoric archaeological sites

in the Choke Canyon Reservoir area. The work was carried out by Texas A&M

University for the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas

at San Antonio. The field work was conducted to assess the archaeological

potential of each site in order to advance recommendations for further investigations.

The artifact samples, although meager, are described and these data

are incorporated with other information from each site towards an overall site

This guide to the town and missions at Guerrero, Coahuila, is based largely upon the research efforts of the Gateway Project, an archaeological and ethnohistoric study of the area conducted by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio during 1975 to 1977. Because the project was dealing with historic mission buildings which housed native American inhabitants of the region, the project had both historic and prehistoric aspects. Archeological involvement in the exhumation of relatively recent historic cemeteries is a new development in Texas. Traditionally, archeologists have directed their attention toward the burial practices of aboriginal peoples and have shied away from any dealings with the excavations of late nineteenth and early twentieth century cemeteries. This trend has continued despite an ever-increasing awareness of and concern with changing modes of historic and recent tombstone embellishment on the part of archeologists, cultural anthropologists and historians. The choke chain has come to be regarded as an indispensable aid to training dogs, but even the most time-hallowed practices deserve an occasional critical review. The author has recently completed an investigation into the uses and abuses of choke chains, and failed to find any benefit from using a choker rather than a conventional leather collar. Indeed, there are some very considerable dangers and disadvantages associated with the device. These charges may sound like heresy to many dog-trainers, but to others, it may strike a sympathetic chord.

This is a participant observation study of animal/human relationships at zoos. Both zoo personnel and zoo visitors were observed intensively over a period of four months and less intensively for two years. While young zoo employees tended to be naturalistic, ecologistic and scientistic in their value orientation toward animals, these attitudes were often frustrated by the day to day routines of the job involving hosing and feeding, and the realities of limitations placed upon zoos by strained budgets and antiquated buildings. Injuries To Birds Of Prey Caught In Leghold Traps, Katherine Durham

173 birds of prey, including 32 Bald Eagles, have been treated for trapping injuries at the University of Minnesota Raptor Research and Rehabilitation Program since 1972. These were birds caught primarily in "open" bait /eghold sets incidental to furbearer trapping in the Minnesota region. The differential outcome of the injuries with respect to crippling or mortality is presented for large versus small raptors, toe versus leg injuries, and fracture of the leg versus soft tissue damage only.

There is only limited potential for mitigating the effects of trapping injuries to raptors because of the irreversible soft tissue damage usually associated …

In 1862, Capt. Ketchem from Fort Baker noted in his records that he received the assistance of the ranchers in Hettenshaw in rounding up the Indians. Among them were Jim Willburn, Jim Graham and Steve Fleming. Fleming acted as a guide for the soldiers and helped to bring in Chief Lassik and his band from the area in southwest Trinity known as Red and Black Lassic or simply the Lassics. An entry in the military records which reads, “Willburn and Fleming report the loss of many stock.”

A 20-day field/informant type of archaeological survey was performed on a 13 section corridor in Park and Mendon townships in St. Joseph County and section 32 of Brady Township in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. This survey universe bordered on portions of the Portage River and its tributaries and along the shores of Portage and Fishers lakes. Twenty-nine prehistoric human occupation sites were located, described and recorded during the survey, five of which had been previously known (four unrecorded). Many of the sites were multicomponent but the majority of components are believed to represent Archaic period cultural manifestations. About 300 recognizable artifacts …

The 1980 Settlement Pattern Survey in Allegan County, Michigan observed and recorded 75 prehistoric sites representing a total of 81 components. This report describes and evaluates these sites and the archaeological materials recovered from them. Site location relative to second and third order streams in this portion of the Lower Kalamazoo River basin is evaluated, and the importance of this relationship in comparison with soil association and landform is assessed.

In 1980 the Kalamazoo Basin Survey moved upstream into the upper valley of Calhoun and Jackson Counties, establishing and investigating three transects located between the communities of Battle Creek on the west and Concord on the east (Fig. 1). Transect A encompasses 94.5 km² of Convis, Emmett, Marshall and Pennfield Townships in Calhoun County. In 1979 Western Michigan University undertook the Phase I archae.ological survey of 20 miles along the proposed route of US-31, Matthew Road to I-94, in Berrien County, Michigan. A report on this work by Elizabeth Garland and William Mangold was submitted to the Michigan Department of Transportation and the Michigan Department of State in May, 1980 (Garland and Mangold 1980).
