In 1973 folklorist Jan Brunvand presented a definition of modern folkloristics that challenged folklorists to take an eclectic approach to the study of traditional culture by employing theoretical and methodological approaches from a variety of disciplines including communications. This thesis represents one effort at addressing part of this challenge by discussing specific folklore and folklife objectives and how still photography can be incorporated in the research process.

Test Excavations At The Tankersley Creek Site, A Multicomponent Campsite In Titus County, Texas, Wayne C. Young

Documents from the Texas State Department of Highways-Archive

Test excavations of the Tankersley Creek Site, 41TT108, in Titus County, Texas, uncovered a multi-component campsite ranging in time from the Early La Harpe Aspect to Caddo IV times. Component I was the earliest recognized occupation and was characterized by slightly expanding stem dart points. Component II followed Component I and was recognized by a dominance of Large Gary dart points. Component III appeared to represent an early Caddo I occupation and contained Small Gary points and decorated pottery that is usually affiliated with the Caddo I Period. Interestingly, this component lacked the Alba arrowpoints normally found in sites of …

The HSUS' dogfighting program is one of the most extensive in the nation. We are frequently contacted by other animal welfare groups, law enforcement agencies, and the media to provide assistance or expertise. Our investigators frequently travel undercover to dogfights, risking their lives to garner information from the heavily armed and often drug-using dogfighting fraternity. This study focuses upon dance events, those occasions which have as their purpose the convening of persons to square dance or play party games which resemble square dances. Four different forms of these events were identified in Trigg County, Kentucky: neighborhood dances, play-parties, picnics and barbecues and public dances. I have described them from a historical perspective, examining the social interactions that occurred during the events.

The major portion of the information presented was gathered through interviews with current and past residents of this county. The descriptions span the years from the turn of the twentieth century to the 1970s. …

Since gradually replacing red ochre as a dye in ancient Egypt, henna has been cultivated throughout the Middle East and North Africa. Traditional uses dealing with body art and medicine were associated with traits commonly connected with the color red, the dichotomies of life and death, good and evil. Today, these traits have all but disappeared while henna's use as a cosmetic dye, an embellishment, has remained prevalent in some regions. There can be no doubt that many uses and symbolisms attached to uses have gone unrecorded, been forgotten, and are irretrievable. The purpose of this research was to preserve …

Frontier Subsistence: An Example Of Nineteenth Century Fur Trade Food Procurement, Leslie A. Perry

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

The area of Frontier subsistence strategies holds considerable potential for explaining Euroamerican adaptation in North America between A.D. 1500 and 1900. This thesis examines the interrelationships between food procurement activities of a nineteenth century northern Plains fur trade post, Fort Union, and its environmental and economic settings. The subsistence strategy identified from ethnohistorical, archival, and archeological data illustrates the way in which inhabitants of the fort coped with a variable local environment and the demands of the fur trade. Evaluation of the effectiveness of the post's subsistence strategy indicates that both the subsistence strategy and the economic base of the …

The Paleoethnobotany Of The Upper Mississippi Component At The Elam Site, A Seasonal Encampment On The Lower Kalamazoo River, Kathryn E. Parachini

Carbonized floral remains from the Elam site (20AE195) located on the Kalamazoo River in Allegan County, Michigan are identified and analyzed in terms of the local Upper Mississippian subsistence system. The function of Elam as a specialized activity locus in the seasonal round of a late prehistoric people is examined. Interpretations of the botanical data permit hypothetical reconstruction of vegetation and natural ecosystems in the site vicinity as they were prior to Euro-American contact. A warm weather seasonal re-occupation of several months duration is indicated, with intensive exploitation of several plant and animal resources abundant in the riverine and marsh …

Middle Woodland Ceramics Of Northwestern Indiana And Western Michigan, William L. Mangold

Much information regarding the Middle Woodland occupation of northwestern Indiana and western Michigan has been recovered since the definition of the Goodall Focus by Quimby (1941a). The object of this report is to undertake a detailed stylistic analysis of the ceramic assemblages from Middle Woodland sites, including the vessels used to elucidate Middle Woodland cultural relationships within this region. An attempt is made to establish stylistic zones through the use of typological and attribute analysis.

A Social Impact Assessment Study Of The Barrier Sand Dune Controversy In Bridgman, Michigan, Linda Lee Sweigart

This analytical anthropological study examined the interrelationships among the population, environment, and modes of technology of a small community in southwestern Michigan. The researcher assumed a participant-observer role and engaged in a social impact assessment by (1) conducting a survey among the residents in the community of Bridgman, Michigan; (2 ) analyzing the data and making recommendations concerning the impact of a proposed sand mining operation in the community; and (3) providing detailed records of the assessment process.
