Dogfighters On The Run: The Hsus Spurs Police Crackdown Jun 1986

Dogfighters On The Run: The Hsus Spurs Police Crackdown

Close Up Reports

How can anyone derive satisfaction from watching two dogs tear each other apart? How can anyone sit for hours, not only watching but cheering every wound, every broken leg or mangled eye?

We can only guess the answers to such questions. What we do know is that every weekend, hundreds of men, women, and children attend dogfights, enjoying the blood and excitement of dogs matched to the death and even wagering on the outcome. Virtually anyplace--a vacant garage, warehouse, apartment building basement, or city park--can house a dog pit. A picturesque farmhouse or barn may hold hundreds of spectators brought …

An Attribute Analysis Of Sandy Lake Ware From Norman County And North Central Minnesota, Lynelle A. Peterson May 1986

An Attribute Analysis Of Sandy Lake Ware From Norman County And North Central Minnesota, Lynelle A. Peterson

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

Sandy Lake Ware, is a Late Woodland-Early Historic ceramic ware, found throughout northern Minnesota and parts of North Dakota, Wisconsin, Ontario, and Manitoba. No formal analysis of this ware has occurred since its definition by Cooper and Johnson in 1964. As a result, the basic information regarding the attributes, the interrelationship between attributes, and factors leading to variation within Sandy Lake Ware are poorly understood.

This thesis analyses the relationship between between attributes from 1459 vessels collected in Norman county, and north central Minnesota, using the chi square statistical method of analysis. This thesis also tests the implicit assumption of …

Political Power And Political Organization Comanche Politics, 1786-1875, Thomas Whitney Kavanagh Apr 1986

Political Power And Political Organization Comanche Politics, 1786-1875, Thomas Whitney Kavanagh

Anthropology ETDs

For almost one hundred years, anthropological interest in Plains Indian political organization has been focused by the adaptation -- persistence debate. It has been suggested that certain aspects of the plains cultures were adaptations to the exigencies of plains life, but since most of the historic period plains peoples were recent immigrants to the plains, other aspects can be explained by reference to persistent "cultural baggage" brought with them from their former homes. In relation to this paradigm, the Comanche are problematic. They are said to lack several political institutions common to the "typical plains." Several problems, both methodological and …

New Directions Within Applied Anthropology, Eleanor Mary Dominek Apr 1986

New Directions Within Applied Anthropology, Eleanor Mary Dominek

Masters Theses

This study explores the relationship between applied anthropological research and traditional anthropological research in terms of structural and methodological differences. The methods and techniques of Social Impact Assessment, as practiced in North America, and of international development anthropology are also compared. It is found that different kinds of applied anthropology modify methods and techniques (a) to meet the specific needs of supporting research institutions, (b) in response to the unique nature of individual applied problems, and (c) in order to create a type of research product which is very different from that of basic research.
