Bayesian Designs For Two-Arm Clinical Trials With Time-To-Event Endpoints: Incorporating Historical Data Through Power Priors, Sara Hajraf H. Almutiri
Bayesian Designs For Two-Arm Clinical Trials With Time-To-Event Endpoints: Incorporating Historical Data Through Power Priors, Sara Hajraf H. Almutiri
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Bayesian methods provide a flexible framework for time-to-event analysis by incorporating prior information. The power prior offers a systematic way to borrow information from historical data. This approach is especially valuable in clinical research, where historical data can enhance inference in early-phase trials with limited sample sizes. This dissertation develops Bayesian approaches for two-arm survival studies using both closed-form and simulation-based methods. The closed-form inference is derived under exponential and Weibull survival models. Under the proportional hazards framework, the posterior is derived through a normal approximation to the log hazard ratio, allowing inference on the treatment effect when the variance …
A New Approach To Generate Combinatorial Patterns In Logical Analysis Of Data And Its Application To Predict College Retention, Salihah Ahmed E. Jaafari
A New Approach To Generate Combinatorial Patterns In Logical Analysis Of Data And Its Application To Predict College Retention, Salihah Ahmed E. Jaafari
Theses and Dissertations
Student retention and degree completion remain central challenges for higher-education institutions, with significant implications for student success, institutional effectiveness, and public accountability. While advances in predictive analytics have enabled earlier identification of students at risk of withdrawal, many commonly used machine learning approaches suffer from limited interpretability, constraining their practical usefulness for advising, intervention, and policy decision making. This dissertation addresses the problem of predicting student persistence by developing and evaluating optimization based, interpretable classification models within the Logical Analysis of Data (LAD) framework. Building on existing LAD formulations, this research introduces two novel pattern generation models, the Best Term …
A Leslie System For A Demographic Simulation: From An Actuarial Point Of View, David Kings
A Leslie System For A Demographic Simulation: From An Actuarial Point Of View, David Kings
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis develops a discrete stochastic linear systems interpretation of age–stage demographic evolution grounded in Leslie operators and realized in a discrete-event simulation implemented with salabim. The central claim is that one annual cycle of the simulation constitutes a cone-preserving, stochastic affine transformation on a high- dimensional population state vector indexed by age, sex, marital status, household type, employment, and education, and that the composition of yearly operators yields a random matrix product whose top Lyapunov exponent is the stochastic counterpart of the Perron–Frobenius growth rate (Caswell, 2001; Tuljapurkar, 1997)[1, 2]. The actuarial bridge is constructed by mapping simulated survival …
Statistical Methods For Joint Outcome Modeling And Dynamic Assessment Of Recurrent Events, Zifang Kong
Statistical Methods For Joint Outcome Modeling And Dynamic Assessment Of Recurrent Events, Zifang Kong
Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations
Recurrent event data frequently arise in clinical studies where individuals experience repeated, possibly related, events over time. These data are often accompanied by sparse and irregular longitudinal measurements, creating challenges for traditional joint modeling approaches that struggle to account for time-dependent associations and within-subject correlations. We propose FRAILTY (Functional Regression with AutoRegressIve fraiLTY), a novel two-step framework that integrates functional principal component analysis (PACE) with a dynamic frailty model featuring autoregressive structure. FRAILTY accommodates both scalar and functional predictors and captures within-subject dependence across recurrent events. To further extend its utility, we develop a multivariate joint modeling framework that simultaneously …
Unified Hybrid Censoring Samples From Power Pratibha Distribution And Its Applications, Mahmoud Mansour, Hebatalla H. Mohammad Dr, Khalaf S. Sultan Prof.
Unified Hybrid Censoring Samples From Power Pratibha Distribution And Its Applications, Mahmoud Mansour, Hebatalla H. Mohammad Dr, Khalaf S. Sultan Prof.
Basic Science Engineering
This paper suggests an extensive inferential method for the Power Pratibha Distribution (PPD) under Unified Hybrid Censoring Schemes (UHCSs), since there is a growing interest in flexible models in both reliability and service operations. This work studies the PPD model using standard Maximum Likelihood Estimation methods and modern Bayesian approaches too. Using a complex architecture, UHCS simulates tests more closely to what is done in practice than by using more basic censoring schemes. Using analysis, the probability and statistical ranges are carefully calculated for the parameters. Tests demonstrate that Bayesian estimation gives better results than many other methods for estimation, …

Resale Revolution: Trend Implications From Media Presence Transcended To Luxury Retail Markets, Penelope Prochnow
Capstone Projects
This study aims to deepen understanding of fashion trend decline from peak popularity to obsolescence, with implications for sustainability and producer profit margins. It investigates how the attributes and media presence of fashion items influence their journey from high-end editorial coverage to resale platforms. Using survival analysis to model trend lifetimes and cosine similarity metrics to compare resale and magazine keyword frequencies, alongside machine learning for price prediction, the study uncovers critical temporal patterns. Results show that resale trends reflect magazine content with a lag of approximately 18 to 30 months and draw from long-wave revivals spanning 6 to 14 …
Expressive And Interpretable User Engagement Prediction Using Multivariate Survival Processes, Akshay Aravamudan
Expressive And Interpretable User Engagement Prediction Using Multivariate Survival Processes, Akshay Aravamudan
Theses and Dissertations
The ability to characterize how information diffuses online is of paramount importance to stakeholders that are interested in tasks such as proposing solutions for mitigating and countering dis/misinformation, predicting user engagement of content in social media, planning marketing campaigns to roll-out products and planning dissemination of political campaign messaging among others. One such facet of learning the dynamics of information diffusion is the ability to predict user engagement or the popularity of a single piece of information as it spreads through an online medium. Existing works in this regard mainly either obfuscate user level information or utilize frameworks that are …

Innovative Methods For The Design And Analysis Of Phase Ii Clinical Trials, Feng Tian
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Drug development has become increasingly time-consuming, costly, and risky in recent years. There is significant potential for improving clinical trial designs, particularly for phase II trials, which play a critical role in the drug development process. Innovative methods are especially necessary for addressing key challenges in phase II trials in terms of dose-ranging study, patient population selection, and decentralized clinical trials (DCTs). This dissertation presents a comprehensive set of methodologies that address these critical issues with three projects. The first project introduces a Bayesian adaptive dose-ranging design that integrates both efficacy and toxicity data to evaluate each dose comprehensively. The …

Bayesian Approaches In Multi-State Markov Models And High Dimensional Time-To-Event Data., Yuchen Han
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation consists of two projects. The first one involves nonparametric methods on Continuous Time Markov Chains (CTMCs). The second one is centered around Bayesian shrinkage models for detecting prognostic and predictive biomarkers in high-dimensional clinical data. Both these projects build on methods from across the frequentist and Bayesian paradigm to offer novel solutions. In the first project, we aim to model the nonlinear effects of continuous variables within multistate framework in a non-parametrically by appealing to the rich mathematical framework of Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces (RKHS). Then we adapted the classical Representer Theorem to penalized (squared norm) log-likelihood which …

Stock Market Volatility In The United Kingdom: Simulating Post-Covid-19 Recovery, Bala A. Dahiru, Mohammed Shuaibu, Najibullah Hassanov
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This paper investigates the time it would take for the FTSE-100 index to reach its post-COVID-19 peak. The paper utilises an exponential generalised autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (EGARCH) model that accounts for leverage effect and asymmetries. The preferred models amongst competing variants was the Autoregressive Moving Average (ARMA)-EGARCH(2,1) specification and was used to predict daily FTSE-100 data from 5th January 2000 to 21st June 2024. The empirical exercise showed that the COVID-19-induced financial crisis negatively affected the United Kingdom’s stock market performance. The results show that the FTSE100 index could reach its post-pandemic peak around 27th August, 2024 (two months after …
Improving The Efficiency Of Exponential Ratio-Type Estimator For Population Median: A Calibration Weight Adjustment Approach, Mathew J. Iseh, Kufre J. Bassey
Improving The Efficiency Of Exponential Ratio-Type Estimator For Population Median: A Calibration Weight Adjustment Approach, Mathew J. Iseh, Kufre J. Bassey
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This paper modifies the Bahl and Tuteja exponential ratio-type estimator for population median under simple random and stratified sampling schemes using calibration weight adjustment technique with supplementary information to vary the stratum weights. The bias and mean square error of the modified estimator were obtained up to the second-order approximation, which satisfies the necessary conditions for efficiency. The findings show that the new estimator surpasses existing estimators in efficiency gain. This suggests the appropriateness of calibration weight modification in boosting the efficiency of a population parameter estimator under stratified random sampling especially where the population parameter of the auxiliary variable …

A New Generalized Gamma-Weibull Distribution And Its Applications, Nihimat Iyebuhola Aleshinloye, Samuel Adewale Aderoju, Alfred Adewole Abiodun, Bako Lukmon Taiwo
Al-Bahir
In this paper, a New Generalized Gamma-Weibull (NGGW) distribution is developed by compounding Weibull and generalized gamma distribution. Some mathematical properties such as moments, Rényi entropy and order statistics are derived and discussed. The maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) method is used to estimate the model parameters. The proposed model is applied to two real-life datasets to illustrate its performance and flexibility as compared to some other competing distributions. The results obtained show that the new distribution fits each of the data better than the other competing distributions.

Forecasting Remission Time Of A Treatment Method For Leukemia As An Application To Statistical Inference Approach, Ahmed Galal Atia, Mahmoud Mansour, Rashad Mohamed El-Sagheer, B. S. El-Desouky
Basic Science Engineering
In this paper, Weibull-Linear Exponential distribution (WLED) has been investigated whether being it is a well-fit distribution to a clinical real data. These data represent the duration of remission achieved by a certain drug used in the treatment of leukemia for a group of patients. The statistical inference approach is used to estimate the parameters of the WLED through the set of the fitted data. The estimated parameters are utilized to evaluate the survival and hazard functions and hence assessing the treatment method through forecasting the duration of remission times of patients. A two-sample prediction approach has been applied to …

Novel Feature Evaluation In Ultra-High Dimensional Right-Censored Data, With Applications To Head And Neck Cancer, Atika Farzana Urmi
Graduate Research Posters
Background: Head and neck cancer is the 6th most common cancer worldwide with an expected 1.08 million new cases each year. Such cancer data are ultra-high dimensional with thousands of clinical features and gene expressions, making it challenging for the traditional analytical tools to extract the potential biomarker for the cancer survival and control false discoveries. In addition, presence of heavy censoring can affect the screening procedures based on Kaplan-Meier (K-M) survival estimates.
Aim: To propose a model free, ultra-high dimensional feature screening method with two-dimensional survival outcome allowing false discovery rate (FDR) control.
Method: 516 primary tumor patients with …
Infrastructure Development For Personalized Risk Prediction To Reduce Cardiovascular Disease In Childhood Cancer Survivors, Suman Shrestha
Infrastructure Development For Personalized Risk Prediction To Reduce Cardiovascular Disease In Childhood Cancer Survivors, Suman Shrestha
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Although childhood cancer survivors have lengthy life expectancies, they run the risk of experiencing long-term health issues as a result of their treatment. The most frequent non-cancerous cause of morbidity and mortality for these survivors is cardiac disease. Radiation therapy (RT) has been linked in numerous cohort studies to a higher chance of developing a late cardiac disease in these survivors, and this risk rises with higher mean heart doses and increased RT exposure to larger cardiac volumes. Since, the heart is a heterogeneous organ made up of several distinct substructures, RT dose received by the entire heart does not …
Dynamic Prediction For Alternating Recurrent Events Using A Semiparametric Joint Frailty Model, Jaehyeon Yun
Dynamic Prediction For Alternating Recurrent Events Using A Semiparametric Joint Frailty Model, Jaehyeon Yun
Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations
Alternating recurrent events data arise commonly in health research; examples include hospital admissions and discharges of diabetes patients; exacerbations and remissions of chronic bronchitis; and quitting and restarting smoking. Recent work has involved formulating and estimating joint models for the recurrent event times considering non-negligible event durations. However, prediction models for transition between recurrent events are lacking. We consider the development and evaluation of methods for predicting future events within these models. Specifically, we propose a tool for dynamically predicting transition between alternating recurrent events in real time. Under a flexible joint frailty model, we derive the predictive probability of …

Statistical Methods For Personalized Treatment Selection And Survival Data Analysis Based On Observational Data With High-Dimensional Covariates., Don Ramesh Dinendra Sudaraka Tholkage
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Due to the wide availability of functional data from multiple disciplines, the studies of functional data analysis have become popular in the recent literature. However, the related development in censored survival data has been relatively sparse. In Chapter 2, we consider the problem of analyzing time-to-event data in the presence of functional predictors. We develop a conditional generalized Kaplan Meier (KM) estimator that incorporates functional predictors using kernel weights and rigorously establishes its asymptotic properties. In addition, we propose to select the optimal bandwidth based on a time-dependent Brier score. We then carry out extensive numerical studies to examine the …

Effect Of Monetary Policy Rate On Market Interest Rates In Nigeria: A Threshold And Nardl Approach, Oluwafemi E. Awopegba, Joseph O. Afolabi, Lydia T. Adeoye, Godwin O. Akpokodje
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This study examines the effect of monetary policy rate (MPR) on market interest rates in Nigeria. For parsimony, we develop two indexes called the short-term interest rate (SINT) and Lending interest rate (LINT) to represent deposit and lending rates respectively. The nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) and threshold regression models are adopted. The study uses monthly data from 2002:M1 to 2019:M12. The results of the threshold regression model indicate that the degree of the effect of MPR on SINT and LINT above the estimated threshold of 11 and 13 percent respectively is greater and significant than if MPR were to …

Approximate Likelihood Based Estimations For Joint Models With Intractable Likelihoods, Karl Stessy M. Bisselou
Approximate Likelihood Based Estimations For Joint Models With Intractable Likelihoods, Karl Stessy M. Bisselou
Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the development of approximation approaches for the joint modeling (JM) of repeated measures data and time-to-event data in the presence of analytically or numerically intractable likelihoods. Current likelihood-based inferences for JMs show several limitations including (i) intractability of integrals during marginal likelihood derivations due to the complexity in computations, and (ii) the large number of nuisance parameters (unobserved) posing a problem with convergence. The h-likelihood (HL) and synthetic likelihood (SL) are two computationally efficient estimation approaches that overcome these challenges.
In the presence of extremely high censoring rates, the HL can produce bias parameter estimates. We …

Statistical Models And Analysis Of Univariate And Multivariate Degradation Data, Lochana Palayangoda
Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations
For degradation data in reliability analysis, estimation of the first-passage time (FPT) distribution to a threshold provides valuable information on reliability characteristics. Recently, Balakrishnan and Qin (2019; Applied Stochastic Models in Business and Industry, 35:571-590) studied a nonparametric method to approximate the FPT distribution of such degradation processes if the underlying process type is unknown. In this thesis, we propose improved techniques based on saddlepoint approximation, which enhance upon their suggested methods. Numerical examples and Monte Carlo simulation studies are used to illustrate the advantages of the proposed techniques. Limitations of the improved techniques are discussed and some possible solutions …

In this paper, the point at issue is to deliberate point and interval estimations for the parameters of Weibull-Gamma distribution (WGD) using progressively Type-II censored (PROG-II-C) sample under step stress partially accelerated life test (SSPALT) model. The maximum likelihood (ML), Bayes, and four parametric bootstrap methods are used to obtain the point estimations for the distribution parameters and the acceleration factor. Furthermore, the approximate confidence intervals (ACIs), four bootstrap confidence intervals and credible intervals of the estimators have been gotten. The results of Bayes estimators are computed under the squared error loss (SEL) function using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) …
Estimation Of The Treatment Effect With Bayesian Adjustment For Covariates, Li Xu
Estimation Of The Treatment Effect With Bayesian Adjustment For Covariates, Li Xu
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
The Bayesian adjustment for confounding (BAC) is a Bayesian model averaging method to select and adjust for confounding factors when evaluating the average causal effect of an exposure on a certain outcome. We extend the BAC method to time-to-event outcomes. Specifically, the posterior distribution of the exposure effect on a time-to-event outcome is calculated as a weighted average of posterior distributions from a number of candidate proportional hazards models, weighing each model by its ability to adjust for confounding factors. The Bayesian Information Criterion based on the partial likelihood is used to compare different models and approximate the Bayes factor. …
Robustness Of Semi-Parametric Survival Model: Simulation Studies And Application To Clinical Data, Isaac Nwi-Mozu
Robustness Of Semi-Parametric Survival Model: Simulation Studies And Application To Clinical Data, Isaac Nwi-Mozu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An efficient way of analyzing survival clinical data such as cancer data is a great concern to health experts. In this study, we investigate and propose an efficient way of handling survival clinical data. Simulation studies were conducted to compare performances of various forms of survival model techniques using an R package ``survsim". Models performance was conducted with varying sample sizes as small ($n5000$). For small and mild samples, the performance of the semi-parametric outperform or approximate the performance of the parametric model. However, for large samples, the parametric model outperforms the semi-parametric model. We compared the effectiveness and reliability …

A Bayesian Framework For Estimating Seismic Wave Arrival Time, Hua Zhong
A Bayesian Framework For Estimating Seismic Wave Arrival Time, Hua Zhong
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Because earthquakes have a large impact on human society, statistical methods for better studying earthquakes are required. One characteristic of earthquakes is the arrival time of seismic waves at a seismic signal sensor. Once we can estimate the earthquake arrival time accurately, the earthquake location can be triangulated, and assistance can be sent to that area correctly. This study presents a Bayesian framework to predict the arrival time of seismic waves with associated uncertainty. We use a change point framework to model the different conditions before and after the seismic wave arrives. To evaluate the performance of the model, we …
Effects Of Perioperative Hyperglycemia In Patients With Diabetes Compared To Patients Without Diabetes: A Retrospective Study Of Treatment And Outcomes, Matthew Anderson
Effects Of Perioperative Hyperglycemia In Patients With Diabetes Compared To Patients Without Diabetes: A Retrospective Study Of Treatment And Outcomes, Matthew Anderson
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
The main goal of this project was to examine the differences in perioperative hyperglycemia treatment received by patients with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus (DM) and patients without a diagnosis of diabetes (NDM); and how these treatment differences can affect the length of hospital stay. Studies have revealed that, when comparing DM and NDM patients with the same degree of perioperative hyperglycemia, NDM patients suffer worse outcomes. It has been suggested in previous research that this may be because NDM patients receive treatment that does not measure up to the standard of care treatment that DM patients receive. In this …

Unified Methods For Feature Selection In Large-Scale Genomic Studies With Censored Survival Outcomes, Lauren Spirko-Burns, Karthik Devarajan
COBRA Preprint Series
One of the major goals in large-scale genomic studies is to identify genes with a prognostic impact on time-to-event outcomes which provide insight into the disease's process. With rapid developments in high-throughput genomic technologies in the past two decades, the scientific community is able to monitor the expression levels of tens of thousands of genes and proteins resulting in enormous data sets where the number of genomic features is far greater than the number of subjects. Methods based on univariate Cox regression are often used to select genomic features related to survival outcome; however, the Cox model assumes proportional hazards …
