Statistical Modeling Of Private Sector Participation In Disaster Risk Reduction Data, Wupeng Yin Nov 2020

Statistical Modeling Of Private Sector Participation In Disaster Risk Reduction Data, Wupeng Yin

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The impacts of disaster on the private sector are inevitable, but their risks can be managed and reduced by preventively evaluative measures. Disaster risk reduction index (DRRI) and Disaster Experience (DE) variables were investigated in a survey study in six Western Hemisphere cities within the private sector of various business sizes. Our thesis built and evaluated 16 predictive models of DRRI with 36 categorical predictors and N = 1162 observations. Four statistical methods for linear regression and five for classification as well as seven machine learning methods were utilized. We also used stepwise selection and regulation methods for variable selection. …

Inferring A Consensus Problem List Using Penalized Multistage Models For Ordered Data, Philip S. Boonstra, John C. Krauss Oct 2019

Inferring A Consensus Problem List Using Penalized Multistage Models For Ordered Data, Philip S. Boonstra, John C. Krauss

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

A patient's medical problem list describes his or her current health status and aids in the coordination and transfer of care between providers, among other things. Because a problem list is generated once and then subsequently modified or updated, what is not usually observable is the provider-effect. That is, to what extent does a patient's problem in the electronic medical record actually reflect a consensus communication of that patient's current health status? To that end, we report on and analyze a unique interview-based design in which multiple medical providers independently generate problem lists for each of three patient case abstracts …

Loss-Based Cross-Validated Deletion/Substitution/Addition Algorithms In Estimation, Sandra E. Sinisi, Mark J. Van Der Laan Mar 2004

Loss-Based Cross-Validated Deletion/Substitution/Addition Algorithms In Estimation, Sandra E. Sinisi, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In van der Laan and Dudoit (2003) we propose and theoretically study a unified loss function based statistical methodology, which provides a road map for estimation and performance assessment. Given a parameter of interest which can be described as the minimizer of the population mean of a loss function, the road map involves as important ingredients cross-validation for estimator selection and minimizing over subsets of basis functions the empirical risk of the subset-specific estimator of the parameter of interest, where the basis functions correspond to a parameterization of a specified subspace of the complete parameter space. In this article we …

Mixture Models For Assessing Differential Expression In Complex Tissues Using Microarray Data, Debashis Ghosh Feb 2004

Mixture Models For Assessing Differential Expression In Complex Tissues Using Microarray Data, Debashis Ghosh

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The use of DNA microarrays has become quite popular in many scientific and medical disciplines, such as in cancer research. One common goal of these studies is to determine which genes are differentially expressed between cancer and healthy tissue, or more generally, between two experimental conditions. A major complication in the molecular profiling of tumors using gene expression data is that the data represent a combination of tumor and normal cells. Much of the methodology developed for assessing differential expression with microarray data has assumed that tissue samples are homogeneous. In this article, we outline a general framework for determining …
