(R2152) New Bivariate Type-2 Gumbel Distribution Based On The Farlie-Gumbel-Morgenstern Copula: Properties And Its Application In Survival Analysis, Muneeb Javed, Said Farooq Shah, Muhammad Osama, Muhammad Atif, Muhammad Farooq

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We introduce a new bivariate probability distribution, termed the Bivariate FGM Type-2 Gumbel Distribution, constructed by combining the Farlie–Gumbel–Morgenstern (FGM) copula with the Type-2 Gumbel marginal distributions. This proposed distribution provides a flexible framework for modeling bivariate data and offers a viable alternative to several existing bivariate distributions, especially in scenarios where capturing dependence between variables is crucial. The theoretical properties of the distribution are thoroughly explored. We derive the marginal and conditional distributions, conditional expectations, moment generating function, and product moments. Procedures for random number generation from the distribution are discussed. Reliability-based characteristics, such as the survival function and …

(R2131) Analysis Of Map/Ph/1 Retrial Inventory Queueing System With Constant Retrial Rate, Bernoulli Vacation, Breakdown, Delayed Repair, Balking, (S, S) Policy And Emergency Replenishment, G. Ayyappan, M. Thilakavathy Dec 2025

(R2131) Analysis Of Map/Ph/1 Retrial Inventory Queueing System With Constant Retrial Rate, Bernoulli Vacation, Breakdown, Delayed Repair, Balking, (S, S) Policy And Emergency Replenishment, G. Ayyappan, M. Thilakavathy

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A single server retrial queueing-inventory model is investigated in this study. In Bernoulli vacation, after providing service to the customer, the server may opt to avail vacation or start the service to subsequent customer. During the busy period, breakdown and balking may occur. The inventory is replenished to an (s, S) policy and the replenishing time is assumed to adopt an exponential distribution. Furthermore, assume that an emergency replenishment of one item with zero lead time takes place when the on-hand inventory level decreases to zero. We integrate the emergency replenishment into the system to ensure customer satisfaction. For our …

(R2120) Flexible Group Service Map/Ph/1 Queueing Model With Working Vacation And Optional Service, G. Ayyappan, S. Kalaiarasi Dec 2025

(R2120) Flexible Group Service Map/Ph/1 Queueing Model With Working Vacation And Optional Service, G. Ayyappan, S. Kalaiarasi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

There are many uses of queues, where services are provided in groups; these types of queues are widely studied in the literature. In this paper we examine a particular queueing model wherein the services are provided in groups and the group size may be less than or equal to the size initially fixed. The arrival follows a Markovian arrival process. The service time of each individual customer follows phase type distribution. The maximum of each customer’s individual service time within a group is defined as the group’s service time. At the service completion moment if there are fewer customers than …

(R2115) Analysis Of Single Server Queueing System With Differentiated Vacations And Differentiated Breakdowns, V. Karthick, V. Suvitha

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This research work considers a single server queueing model with differentiated vacations. In addition there is a possibility of two types of failures when the server is in a busy period; namely hard failure and soft failure. In the time of soft failure server may work with a slow service rate. We analyzed as a Quasi-Birth-and-Death (QBD) process, using the matrix geometric method, the steady state probability vector of the number of customers in the queue and the stability conditions are produced. Busy period analysis of the proposed model in given. The effects of various parameters on the system performance …

(R2132) A Multi Server Markovian Working Vacation Queue With Randomly Varying Environment, A. Sundaramoorthy, R. Kalyanaraman

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this article, we consider a multi server Markovian queueing system with working vacation. During busy period, the arrival and service completion are generated by K distinct randomly varying environments. At a service completion epoch, if no customer in the system, the servers take vacation, the vacation policy is multiple vacation policy and the vacation period follows negative exponential distribution. In addition, during vacation period the servers serve customers if they arrive. Based on the vacation termination point we define two Models. For the two models, the steady state probability vector of number of customers in the queue, the stability …

A Leslie System For A Demographic Simulation: From An Actuarial Point Of View, David Kings Dec 2025

A Leslie System For A Demographic Simulation: From An Actuarial Point Of View, David Kings

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis develops a discrete stochastic linear systems interpretation of age–stage demographic evolution grounded in Leslie operators and realized in a discrete-event simulation implemented with salabim. The central claim is that one annual cycle of the simulation constitutes a cone-preserving, stochastic affine transformation on a high- dimensional population state vector indexed by age, sex, marital status, household type, employment, and education, and that the composition of yearly operators yields a random matrix product whose top Lyapunov exponent is the stochastic counterpart of the Perron–Frobenius growth rate (Caswell, 2001; Tuljapurkar, 1997)[1, 2]. The actuarial bridge is constructed by mapping simulated survival …

The Odds Don’T Lie: Mathematical Reasoning And Societal Ignorance In Don’T Look Up, Nysa Vedwan, Shane Carey Nov 2025

The Odds Don’T Lie: Mathematical Reasoning And Societal Ignorance In Don’T Look Up, Nysa Vedwan, Shane Carey

LASER Journal

In Adam McKay’s 2021 satirical sci-fi movie Don’t Look Up, two astronomers discover a comet heading directly toward Earth. Despite overwhelming evidence and near-certainty of global extinction, their warnings are ignored and ridiculed. This paper discusses the mathematical and scientific foundations of the movie’s social and political reception, and specifically focuses on orbital prediction and probabilistic modeling as they relate to public understanding of risk. This paper shows how data is often undermined by political and social dynamics, by connecting the fictional events of the movie with real-world crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate emergency. In Don’t Look …

Latent Classification Of Time-Dependent Transition Rates In Longitudinal Binary Outcome Data, Joonha Chang, Wenyaw Chan Nov 2025

Latent Classification Of Time-Dependent Transition Rates In Longitudinal Binary Outcome Data, Joonha Chang, Wenyaw Chan

School of Public Health Faculty Publications

Continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC) models and latent classification methods are commonly used to analyze longitudinal categorical outcomes in medical research. While CTMC models are popular for their simplicity and effectiveness, their assumption of constant transition rates presents limitations in capturing dynamic behaviors. To address this, non-homogeneous continuous-time Markov chains (NH-CTMCs) have been developed, incorporating time-varying transition rates to enhance model flexibility. In this study, we leverage closed-form transition probabilities for a fully ergodic two-state NH-CTMC model and propose a latent class clustering approach to identify heterogeneous transition rate patterns within the population. We emphasize the potential advantages of these models …

Reduced Order Approach For Peening Stress Field Variability, Langdon Feltner, Paul Mort Sep 2025

Reduced Order Approach For Peening Stress Field Variability, Langdon Feltner, Paul Mort

15th International Conference on Shot Peening

A common goal in shot peening research is to connect operational parameters to resultant residual stress fields, providing a means to control and optimize the effectiveness of surface treatment. In practice, experimental measurements of residual stresses are often averaged values over regions that are large in comparison to an impact dimple. In fact, the stochastic nature of impact locations leads to residual stress fields that are distributed. Finite element peening simulations confirm this observation. The goal of this report is to connect operational parameters to localized fluctuations in residual stress through probabilistic reasoning (Figure 1). In particular, the development of …

Long-Term Behavior Of Subordinated Branching Processes With Prevailing Emigration, George Yanev Sep 2025

Long-Term Behavior Of Subordinated Branching Processes With Prevailing Emigration, George Yanev

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper deals into the long-term behavior of subordinated critical branching processes with migration. We focus on scenarios where emigration is the dominant factor and introduce additional randomness in timing through a subordination mechanism, involving renewal processes. The key findings highlight how the initial population size and the interarrival mean time influence both asymptotic behavior of the non-extinction probability and corresponding Yaglom type limit theorems. We also study an alternating regenerative process, when the population cycles between zero and positive states. This research complements previous studies for processes when immigration prevails over emigration.

The Bandages Problem, James E. Marengo, Joseph G. Voelkel, David L. Farnsworth Aug 2025

The Bandages Problem, James E. Marengo, Joseph G. Voelkel, David L. Farnsworth

Articles

A new probability problem, named the Bandages Problem, is described and solved. The problem involves repeatedly selecting and removing an item at random from a finite population that initially consists of a known configuration of single and paired items. For each selection, the probability that the chosen item is single is found. Generalizations are suggested.

Performance Of The Two Sample Likelihood Ratio Test Under A Nested Dirichlet: A Simulation Study, Edwina Agyeman Aug 2025

Performance Of The Two Sample Likelihood Ratio Test Under A Nested Dirichlet: A Simulation Study, Edwina Agyeman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Compositional data analysis (CoDA) addresses multivariate data constrained to a constant sum, such as proportions or percentages. Originating from early warnings regarding misinterpretation by Pearson (1897), the field was formalized by John Aitchison in 1986, whose foundational work remains highly influential. Over time, new modeling techniques and visualization tools have advanced the field, as noted by Greenacre et al. More recently, Turner et al. proposed an approach based on the Nested Dirichlet Distribution (NDD), which accommodates more flexible dependence structures than the standard Dirichlet model. This thesis builds on the methodology of Turner et al. Chapter 1 introduces the nature …

Dice Math And Probability, Warren Campbell Jul 2025

Dice Math And Probability, Warren Campbell

SEAS Faculty Publications

The manufacture of dice for tabletop games is a billion-dollar industry. In gaming circles and online forums, the concept of “cursed dice” is a popular topic. Dice are inherently unfair due to the difficulty of manufacturing them with perfect geometric tolerances and uniform material densities. A common method for testing dice fairness is the chi-square statistic, which is typically assumed to follow the chi-square distribution. However, this assumption is only asymptotically valid.

Exact distributions of the statistic can be computed for dice with few sides and a limited number of rolls—such as 2-sided (D2) and 4-sided (D4) dice—but the computational …

Syntax-Enhanced Boundary-Aware Named Entity Recognition Model, Chuanming Yu, Bin Deng, Zhengang Zhang Jul 2025

Syntax-Enhanced Boundary-Aware Named Entity Recognition Model, Chuanming Yu, Bin Deng, Zhengang Zhang

Journal of Scientific Information Research

[Purpose/significance] This study addresses the issue of inadequate perception of entity boundaries in traditional character-level modeling-based named entity recognition models by integrating syntax information containing entity boundary features into the task using a multi-head graph attention network with dense connections. This integration enhances the effectiveness of named entity recognition.

[Method/process] This study proposes a Syntax-enhanced Boundary-aware Named Entity Recognition Model (SynBNER), which utilizes BERT for text semantic representation and integrates syntax information using a dense-connected graph attention network. This integration incorporates implicit entity boundary information from syntax information into word representations, thereby enhancing the model's entity boundary perception capability.

On The H-Property For Step-Graphons: Residual Case, Wanting Gao May 2025

On The H-Property For Step-Graphons: Residual Case, Wanting Gao

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

We investigate the H-property for step-graphons. Specifically, we sample graphs Gn on n nodes from a step-graphon and evaluate the probability that Gn has a Hamiltonian decomposition in the asymptotic regime as n → ∞. It has been shown in Belabbas and Chen (2023); Belabbas et al. (2021) that for almost all step-graphons, this probability converges to either zero or one. We focus in this paper on the residual case where the zero-one law does not apply. We show that the limit of the probability still exists and provide an explicit expression of it. We present a complete proof of …

Aleci: An R Package For Non-Parametric Confidence Intervals On Accumulated Local Effects Plots, Matthew R. Lister May 2025

Aleci: An R Package For Non-Parametric Confidence Intervals On Accumulated Local Effects Plots, Matthew R. Lister

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

Machine learning models can take a collection of inputs and craft an output. The mathematical formulas these models use to calculate their outputs easily become too complex or time consuming for a human to analyze. Collectively, we refer to these as black box models. Accumulated local effects plots (ALE) are a method for adding interpretability and visibility into the effects that individual variables contribute to the predictions made by black box models. The method designed by D.W. Apley calculates equally spaced point estimates of the response value to construct a graph across the range of the variable of interest. AleCI …

Expressive And Interpretable User Engagement Prediction Using Multivariate Survival Processes, Akshay Aravamudan May 2025

Expressive And Interpretable User Engagement Prediction Using Multivariate Survival Processes, Akshay Aravamudan

Theses and Dissertations

The ability to characterize how information diffuses online is of paramount importance to stakeholders that are interested in tasks such as proposing solutions for mitigating and countering dis/misinformation, predicting user engagement of content in social media, planning marketing campaigns to roll-out products and planning dissemination of political campaign messaging among others. One such facet of learning the dynamics of information diffusion is the ability to predict user engagement or the popularity of a single piece of information as it spreads through an online medium. Existing works in this regard mainly either obfuscate user level information or utilize frameworks that are …

Mortgage Default Classification Modeling For Variable Analysis, Brendan R. Goggins Apr 2025

Mortgage Default Classification Modeling For Variable Analysis, Brendan R. Goggins

Honors College Theses

The financial crisis of the early 2000’s is a prime example of the severe consequences that mortgage default and borrower insolvency can have on economies at large. Mortgage default specifically is a prime case with the popularization of mortgage backed securities and the commonality of this loan structure. Multiple hypotheses and models have been formed to understand the reasons, causes, and consequences of mortgage default. This paper uses both machine learning and statistical classification models to inform an understanding of the variables most significant and impactful to the default outcome of mortgages. Consideration is given to both loan-level microeconomic variables …

Statistical Study Of Solar Wind Conditions Prior To Substorm Onsets, Luke H. Francis Apr 2025

Statistical Study Of Solar Wind Conditions Prior To Substorm Onsets, Luke H. Francis

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Due to complex, multi-region, coupled plasma systems, auroral substorm onsets have been historically difficult to predict. The northward turning of the interplanetary magnetic field was considered the primary candidate as an external triggering mechanism for substorm onsets. However, that was later shown to be coincidental in nature. This study is motivated by recent multi-spacecraft observations that show how several magnetosheath jets at the bow shock were heavily correlated to substorm onsets, indicated by a strongly radial IMF interval. In the past, studies have looked at small samples of substorms in order to make large-scale predictions. However in this study, a …

Irreversible K-Threshold Number Ck(G) And Saturation Probability P[G] For Corona Product And Double Corona Product Graphs, Eric J. Moon, Soumya Bhoumik, Paul Flesher Apr 2025

Irreversible K-Threshold Number Ck(G) And Saturation Probability P[G] For Corona Product And Double Corona Product Graphs, Eric J. Moon, Soumya Bhoumik, Paul Flesher

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

We discuss the Irreversible k-conversion process for graphs, where a vertex becomes saturated and remains saturated indefinitely if at least k of its neighbors are saturated. We investigate sets S0, which when initially saturated, lead to complete graph saturation. We are interested in the minimum |S0| = Ck(G), called the k-threshold number. We consider the construction of the Corona Product Graphs (of Cn and Kp). Additionally, we extend our analysis by defining and exploring Double Corona Product Graphs (of Cn and Kp). Then we incorporate …

Robust Spacecraft Autonomy For Deep Space Exploration In Special Euclidean Group Se(3), Matthew Wittal Mar 2025

Robust Spacecraft Autonomy For Deep Space Exploration In Special Euclidean Group Se(3), Matthew Wittal

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Over the past half-century, humanity has gained extensive experience conducting manned spaceflight near Earth. Arguably, "near Earth" could even include the Moon — the most distant destination humans have reached. However, "near" in this work primarily refers low Earth orbit (LEO). One could argue that we have not truly left Earth since the Apollo, as spacecraft in some LEOs remain subject to atmospheric drag thus emphasizing their continued connection to Earth's immediate environment. Reflecting on this, it becomes clear that humanity has largely remained bound to Earth’s immediate vicinity since the Apollo missions reached the Moon. However, that is set …

On Regularity And Convergence Of Solutions To The Boltzmann-Enskog Equations, Christian Ennis Mar 2025

On Regularity And Convergence Of Solutions To The Boltzmann-Enskog Equations, Christian Ennis

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Boltzmann equation describes the time evolution of the density function in position-velocity space for a classical particle subjected to possible collisions by other particles in a diluted gas that expands in vacuum for a given initial distribution. While many authors have studied the probabilistic interpretation of the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation, there is a dearth of articles on the stochastic framework of the full (that is, spatially inhomogeneous) Boltzmann equation. In this thesis, we examine a stochastic process, developed by S. Albevario, B. Ruediger, and P. Sundar, whose law is a weak solution to a mollified Boltzmann equation. This …

Leveraging Bayesian And Classical Techniques For Survival Analysis Using The Weibull-Rayleigh Distribution, Mahmoud Mansour, Rashad El-Sagheer, Nagwa Mohamed Feb 2025

Leveraging Bayesian And Classical Techniques For Survival Analysis Using The Weibull-Rayleigh Distribution, Mahmoud Mansour, Rashad El-Sagheer, Nagwa Mohamed

Basic Science Engineering

This paper contributes to an extensive analysis of the Weibull-Rayleigh distribution (WRD), including Bayesian inference for randomly censored data. The WRD is a versatile model that fits various types of survival data, especially in situations including censoring, commonly found in biostatistics and engineering reliability research. The research investigates the derivation of the WRD’s probability density and cumulative distribution functions, employing maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) and Bayesian estimating techniques to accurately infer parameters. Gamma priors are utilized in Bayesian analysis, and approximate Bayesian estimates are derived by Gibbs sampling and Lindley’s approximation methods. An actual dataset that represents leukemia-free survival times …

Predicting Capture And Survival Probabilities Of The Arizona Tiger Salamander: A Comparison Of Capture-Recapture Models, Brittney Nelson Jan 2025

Predicting Capture And Survival Probabilities Of The Arizona Tiger Salamander: A Comparison Of Capture-Recapture Models, Brittney Nelson

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Capture-recapture models are essential tools for estimating population dynamics in ecological studies. A fundamental component of these models is the capture history matrix, which records individual detection over time and serves as the basis for estimating survival and capture probabilities. This presentation explores three statistical approaches to these estimations: the Cormack-Jolly-Seber (CJS) model, the Hidden Markov Model (HMM) for CJS, and the Bayesian CJS model. The CJS model provides a likelihood-based framework for estimation, and the HMM CJS incorporates latent states into the model to account for uncertainty in detection. The Bayesian CJS extends this same analysis by integrating prior …

Optimizing Decision-Making In A Cerebral Palsy Model Using Reinforcement Learning, Richard Ampah Jan 2025

Optimizing Decision-Making In A Cerebral Palsy Model Using Reinforcement Learning, Richard Ampah

Pitzer Senior Theses

This study presents an original interdisciplinary investigation into how reinforcement learning (RL) can model motor and cognitive defects and potentially improve motor and cognitive functions in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP), a non-progressive neurological disorder that impairs movement and adaptability. Integrating computational neuroscience and machine learning, the research applies policy gradient methods and Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) to simulate adaptive learning in agents with and without CP-related constraints.

The central aim is to compare the cumulative rewards of optimal policies, derived from value iteration, and human-like learning policies using the REINFORCE algorithm, both with and without the Bellman baseline. The …

Local Limit Theorems On Finitely Generated Abelian Groups, Yutong Yan Jan 2025

Local Limit Theorems On Finitely Generated Abelian Groups, Yutong Yan

Honors Theses

In this thesis, we classify the pointwise behavior of finite-range random walks on finitely generated abelian groups in terms of local limit theorems. Random walks are central objects of research in probability theory, and the theory has found applications in statistics, physics, and even card shuffling. One significant topic in this line of study is random walks on finitely generated groups. Starting from the pioneering work of G. Pólya and H. Kesten, random walks on finitely generated groups have been studied extensively. However, many notable results on the subject (local limit theorems, for example) make assumptions about periodicity and irreducibility …

Fault Tree Analysis For Robust Design, Jonathan Degroff, Gene Jean-Win Hou Jan 2025

Fault Tree Analysis For Robust Design, Jonathan Degroff, Gene Jean-Win Hou

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

The objective of this research is to incorporate system failure into a robust design formation and solution process. The system failure referred to here will be built using fault tree analysis (FTA), which will take all lower-level failure events into consideration. Two examples are investigated here. One will directly treat the probabilities of the basis events as design variables, The other will be formulated in five different models: deterministic design optimization, the reliability index-based, the “and” gate-based, the “or” gate-based and the “inhibit” gate-based robust design. Their corresponding optimization solutions will be compared with each other. The post-optimality analysis of …

Action This Day: The Mathematics And Machinations That Bested The German Enigma, Jonah Weinbaum Jan 2025

Action This Day: The Mathematics And Machinations That Bested The German Enigma, Jonah Weinbaum

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

This thesis presents a comprehensive and chronological overview of cryptographic techniques designed to break Enigma, beginning in 1932 and culminating in the creation of the Turing-Welchman Bombe. We discuss the mathematical theory and electromechanical implements used to decode one of history's greatest ciphers.

Reexamining the Bombe through the lens of modern group theory, we critique Alan Turing's estimation of the number of "stops" that the Bombe produces for various plaintext-ciphertext pairing structures. To address its limitations, we introduce a new framework for estimating the number of stops by extending John Dixon's theorem concerning the probability that uniformly distributed elements of …

Theory And Applications Surrounding Markov Chains, Joseph J. Quisito Jr., Gallean Brown, Elijah Yoder

Capstone Showcase

This capstone project explores the Markov Chain – a mathematical model used to describe systems that transition between states based on probabilities. It begins by introducing the fundamental concepts, including transition matrices, state classifications, and stationary distributions. The paper then applies Markov Chain theory to real-world scenarios, such as simulating Snakes and Ladders games, predicting soccer match outcomes for Manchester United, and generating texts from movie lines. Finally, it discusses key findings, challenges, and potential areas for future research in the field.
