Foreign Private Investment And Economic Growth In Nigeria: A Cointegrated Var And Granger Causality Analysis, F. Z. Abdullahi, S. Ladan, Haruna R. Bakari Dec 2011

Foreign Private Investment And Economic Growth In Nigeria: A Cointegrated Var And Granger Causality Analysis, F. Z. Abdullahi, S. Ladan, Haruna R. Bakari

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This research uses a cointegration VAR model to study the contemporaneous long-run dynamics of the impact of Foreign Private Investment (FPI), Interest Rate (INR) and Inflation rate (IFR) on Growth Domestic Products (GDP) in Nigeria for the period January 1970 to December 2009. The Unit Root Test suggests that all the variables are integrated of order 1. The VAR model was appropriately identified using AIC information criteria and the VECM model has exactly one cointegration relation. The study further investigates the causal relationship using the Granger causality analysis of VECM which indicates a uni-directional causality relationship between GDP and FDI …

Banking Sector Credit And Economic Growth In Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, Aniekan O. Akpansung, Sikiru J. Babalola Dec 2011

Banking Sector Credit And Economic Growth In Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, Aniekan O. Akpansung, Sikiru J. Babalola

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

The paper examines the relationship between banking sector credit and economic growth in Nigeria over the period 1970-2008. The causal links between the pairs of variables of interest were established using Granger causality test while a Two-Stage Least Squares (TSLS) estimation technique was used for the regression models. The results of Granger causality test show evidence of unidirectional causal relationship from GDP to private sector credit (PSC) and from industrial production index (IND) to GDP. Estimated regression models indicate that private sector credit impacts positively on economic growth over the period of coverage in this study. However, lending (interest) rate …

A Unified Approach To Modeling Multivariate Binary Data Using Copulas Over Partitions, Bruce J. Swihart, Brian Caffo, Ciprian Crainiceanu Jul 2010

A Unified Approach To Modeling Multivariate Binary Data Using Copulas Over Partitions, Bruce J. Swihart, Brian Caffo, Ciprian Crainiceanu

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Many seemingly disparate approaches for marginal modeling have been developed in recent years. We demonstrate that many current approaches for marginal modeling of correlated binary outcomes produce likelihoods that are equivalent to the proposed copula-based models herein. These general copula models of underlying latent threshold random variables yield likelihood based models for marginal fixed effects estimation and interpretation in the analysis of correlated binary data. Moreover, we propose a nomenclature and set of model relationships that substantially elucidates the complex area of marginalized models for binary data. A diverse collection of didactic mathematical and numerical examples are given to illustrate …

Space-Time Regression Modeling Of Tree Growth Using The Skew-T Distribution, Farouk S. Nathoo Dec 2008

Space-Time Regression Modeling Of Tree Growth Using The Skew-T Distribution, Farouk S. Nathoo

COBRA Preprint Series

In this article we present new statistical methodology for the analysis of repeated measures of spatially correlated growth data. Our motivating application, a ten year study of height growth in a plantation of even-aged white spruce, presents several challenges for statistical analysis. Here, the growth measurements arise from an asymmetric distribution, with heavy tails, and thus standard longitudinal regression models based on a Gaussian error structure are not appropriate. We seek more flexibility for modeling both skewness and fat tails, and achieve this within the class of skew-elliptical distributions. Within this framework, robust space-time regression models are formulated using random …

Bayesian Hidden Markov Modeling Of Array Cgh Data, Subharup Guha, Yi Li, Donna Neuberg Oct 2006

Bayesian Hidden Markov Modeling Of Array Cgh Data, Subharup Guha, Yi Li, Donna Neuberg

Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Genomic alterations have been linked to the development and progression of cancer. The technique of Comparative Genomic Hybridization (CGH) yields data consisting of fluorescence intensity ratios of test and reference DNA samples. The intensity ratios provide information about the number of copies in DNA. Practical issues such as the contamination of tumor cells in tissue specimens and normalization errors necessitate the use of statistics for learning about the genomic alterations from array-CGH data. As increasing amounts of array CGH data become available, there is a growing need for automated algorithms for characterizing genomic profiles. Specifically, there is a need for …

Semiparametric Latent Variable Regression Models For Spatio-Temporal Modeling Of Mobile Source Particles In The Greater Boston Area, Alexandros Gryparis, Brent A. Coull, Joel Schwartz, Helen H. Suh Apr 2006

Semiparametric Latent Variable Regression Models For Spatio-Temporal Modeling Of Mobile Source Particles In The Greater Boston Area, Alexandros Gryparis, Brent A. Coull, Joel Schwartz, Helen H. Suh

Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Traffic particle concentrations show considerable spatial variability within a metropolitan area. We consider latent variable semiparametric regression models for modeling the spatial and temporal variability of black carbon and elemental carbon concentrations in the greater Boston area. Measurements of these pollutants, which are markers of traffic particles, were obtained from several individual exposure studies conducted at specific household locations as well as 15 ambient monitoring sites in the city. The models allow for both flexible, nonlinear effects of covariates and for unexplained spatial and temporal variability in exposure. In addition, the different individual exposure studies recorded different surrogates of traffic …

Estimating A Treatment Effect With Repeated Measurements Accounting For Varying Effectiveness Duration, Ying Qing Chen, Jingrong Yang, Su-Chun Cheng Nov 2005

Estimating A Treatment Effect With Repeated Measurements Accounting For Varying Effectiveness Duration, Ying Qing Chen, Jingrong Yang, Su-Chun Cheng

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

To assess treatment efficacy in clinical trials, certain clinical outcomes are repeatedly measured for same subject over time. They can be regarded as function of time. The difference in their mean functions between the treatment arms usually characterises a treatment effect. Due to the potential existence of subject-specific treatment effectiveness lag and saturation times, erosion of treatment effect in the difference may occur during the observation period of time. Instead of using ad hoc parametric or purely nonparametric time-varying coefficients in statistical modeling, we first propose to model the treatment effectiveness durations, which are the varying time intervals between the …

Semiparametric Estimation In General Repeated Measures Problems, Xihong Lin, Raymond J. Carroll Sep 2005

Semiparametric Estimation In General Repeated Measures Problems, Xihong Lin, Raymond J. Carroll

Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series

This paper considers a wide class of semiparametric problems with a parametric part for some covariate effects and repeated evaluations of a nonparametric function. Special cases in our approach include marginal models for longitudinal/clustered data, conditional logistic regression for matched case-control studies, multivariate measurement error models, generalized linear mixed models with a semiparametric component, and many others. We propose profile-kernel and backfitting estimation methods for these problems, derive their asymptotic distributions, and show that in likelihood problems the methods are semiparametric efficient. While generally not true, with our methods profiling and backfitting are asymptotically equivalent. We also consider pseudolikelihood methods …

Causal Inference In Longitudinal Studies With History-Restricted Marginal Structural Models, Romain Neugebauer, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Ira B. Tager Apr 2005

Causal Inference In Longitudinal Studies With History-Restricted Marginal Structural Models, Romain Neugebauer, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Ira B. Tager

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Causal Inference based on Marginal Structural Models (MSMs) is particularly attractive to subject-matter investigators because MSM parameters provide explicit representations of causal effects. We introduce History-Restricted Marginal Structural Models (HRMSMs) for longitudinal data for the purpose of defining causal parameters which may often be better suited for Public Health research. This new class of MSMs allows investigators to analyze the causal effect of a treatment on an outcome based on a fixed, shorter and user-specified history of exposure compared to MSMs. By default, the latter represents the treatment causal effect of interest based on a treatment history defined by the …

Significance Analysis Of Time Course Microarray Experiments, John D. Storey, Wenzhong Xiao, Jeffrey T. Leek, Ronald G. Tompkins, Ron W. Davis

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Characterizing the genome-wide dynamic regulation of gene expression is important and will be of much interest in the future. However, there is currently no established method for identifying differentially expressed genes in a time course study. Here we propose a significance method for analyzing time course microarray studies that can be applied to the typical types of comparisons and sampling schemes. This method is applied to two studies on humans. In one study, genes are identified that show differential expression over time in response to in vivo endotoxin administration. Using our method 7409 genes are called significant at a 1% …

Identification Of Risk Factors Associated With Pulpal Disease, Shelley R. Aronson Jun 1994

Identification Of Risk Factors Associated With Pulpal Disease, Shelley R. Aronson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A few studies have identified etiologic factors in pulpal disease, but little is known about the odds ratios of factors associated with pulpal disease. Odds ratios are well established measures of the effects of exposure to a particular outcome, and are comparisons of exposure to non-exposure in cases versus controls. The purpose of this study was to compare exposure of individual teeth to hypothesized risk factors in endodontic cases and in controls. This case-control study consisted of a chart review of 301 endodontic cases and 301 controls. Caries, types of restorations, and periodontal disease were the most significant factors. With …
