The purpose of this study was to determine whether selected nurse-patient contacts effected the attendance of non-private patients at Preparation for Childbirth classes. During the data collection period only six of the eight patients who met the criteria for this study were available. Each of the six patients was reached by at least one of the three types of nurse-patient contacts-- a letter of invitation to the Preparation for Childbirth classes, weekly contacts with the patients at the classes and three home visits to each patient. Postpartum depression was thought to be an important component of maternity blues and was the factor explored in this study. Sleep was hypothesized as a factor affecting either the occurrence or severity of postpartum depression. Hence, the purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between sleep deprivation and postpartum depression.

Twenty patients were interviewed one to three weeks prior to their expected dates of delivery. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Depression scale was administered during the interview and each patient kept a record of her hours of sleep during the following week. An experimental study was done to determine the effectiveness of an instructional method for older ambulatory patients taking prescribed self-administered medications. This method was developed to emphasize the physicians' specific orders, the purpose of medications, feedback of instruction and a plan for remembering and recording medications. The hypothesis tested was that a selected group of ambulatory patients age 60 and over with the instructional method would make significantly fewer errors than a similar control group with no instructions.

A study was conducted to identify selected needs of patients receiving nursing care at home through the Loma Linda University Hospital Department of Home Care. The descriptive survey was used. Fifty patient home care records were reviewed.

From the general information secured, it was found that 68 percent of the patients studied were women. One-half of all patients were under sixty years of age. Fifty-four percent lived with a spouse only, while 26 percent lived with their family. There were 20 percent who lived alone and six of these were over the age of sixty. The purpose of this study was to discover whether or not patients and nurses derived a similar meaning from pictures of a nurse touching a patient in various ways. Five by seven inch black and white photographs were shown to thirty patients and thirty registered nurses. The subjects were controlled in regard to sex, race, residence, language, and physical and emotional orientation. They were asked to focus upon the photographed nurse's touch and to tell in one or two words what meaning they felt that the nurse was trying to convey to the patient by her touch. The exploratory survey method was used to determine the extent to whole scientific knowledge, related to principles and practices of healthful living, was enhanced during the secondary school education of students attending four Seventh-day Adventist secondary schools in Hong Kong. The tool, in the form of a health knowledge test designed to fit the cultural patterns of the population, was applied to 358 Form I (grade 7) and Form V (grade 11) students of the specified schools. Within the scope of the questionnaire designed for this study, it was proposed to determine the satisfactions and dissatisfactions of obstetrical patients at a selected hospital. The study was concerned with patients' perception of nursing care through labor and delivery. Thirty postpartal clinic patients were interviewed in the hospital, using the interview guide which was constructed by the nurse researcher. A "before-after" type experimental study was conducted to find an advantageous time to record baseline blood pressure readings on preoperative patients, which could be referred to following surgery and interpreted as representative of normal for the patients. A review of medical and nursing literature revealed that there is a need to established a blood pressure reading indicative of normal for each patient prior to surgery. Because literature substantiated its acceptance, the ausculatory method of taking indirect arterial blood pressure readings was the technique utilized in this study. It was the purpose of this survey to determine what constitutes effective and ineffective clinical instruction from the student's viewpoint, and to make the findings available. The descriptive survey method using the critical incident technique was used as the method of research. A critical incident report form was constructed as a tool for gathering the data. There were 117 students of nursing who submitted 166 incidents; 52 per cent were of effective instruction and 48 per cent of ineffective instruction.

This study was conducted on seventy-five children, three to eight years of age. The purpose was to compare a three-minute axillary with a three-minute rectal temperature. Known factors which might influence the findings were eliminated. These were emotional stress, physical exercise, antipyretic medications, cooling and heating measures, gastro-intestinal disturbances, and croupettes or oxygen tents. The range of the difference between the temperatures was from 0.8 degrees to 2.2 degrees with the mean difference of 1.13 degrees. The purpose of this study was to find out whether there is a relationship between what the patient can see and hear of on-going activities in the intensive care unit and patient stress. The descriptive survey method was used. A checklist was developed from several sources in literature. Data were collected by observation of individual patients in two intensive care units and by recording their behavior on the checklist. Recording of stress signs was done for five minute intervals every thirty minutes for eight hours, making sixteen intervals for every eight hour period. A descriptive survey was conducted to compare the discomfort experienced on three selected postoperative days to determine if there is one day identified by the patient as the most uncomfortable and to assess the symptoms of which he might complain. A checklist of twelve symptoms common to postsurgical patients was administered on the evenings of the second, third and fourth postoperative days by the researcher. It was the purpose of this study to find out the incidence of cancer of the cervix in a selected group of Seventh-day Adventist women. This was to be accomplished by an exfoliative cytological survey of smears for cervical cancer and the relation of the incidence found to the age, race, marital status, pregnancy status, geographic origin and endocrine therapy of the participants. These participants were the 2248 women who had cervical and/or vaginal smears made while in San Francisco to attend a religious conference in July of 1962.

The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether an introduction course in psychiatric nursing for beginning students would increase their awareness of the covert nursing needs of the hospitalized patient.

Literature was reviewed to find out what had been written concerning covert needs, how one could discern them and to determine the need of the patient as an individual.

A descriptive survey study was carried out at a selected baccalaureate school of nursing in an effort to find out if the maternal interest of senior students of nursing would affect their attitudes toward breast feeding. It was hypothesized that a student who scored high on maternal interest would have a positive attitude toward breast feeding and conversely a student who scored low on the maternal interest scale would have a negative attitude toward breast feeding. The Problem: This study was designed to ascertain which of two pre-catheterization cleansing procedures now in common use for the female patient is more effective in producing an area relatively free of microorganisms.

The Need: Indications of need for the study were: (1) an increasing body of literature linking catheterization with frequent urinary tract infections, many of which are "silent" but have extremely serious sequelae; (2) lack of uniformity in defining adequate pre-catheterization cleansing; and (3) absence of any recorded research to determine an adequate cleansing technique.

It was the purpose of this study to investigate reasons for the choice of a first position by graduates from diploma programs in nursing. This included factors motivating the choice, the time of choice, and reasons for liking and disliking clinical areas. Questionnaires were mailed to 756 graduates of the class of 1961 from twenty-three representative schools. Approximately 46 percent were returned completed.

The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether a combination of grade point averages from high school and one year of prescribed courses in a liberal arts college could be used as a tool in the prediction of scholastic success in two selected schools of nursing.

A descriptive survey of grades and test results was done on 121 students from these schools. The nursing school CPA and results from the state board test pool were used as criteria of success. Total GPA's from secondary school and college, and grades in English, science and non-science subjects were the predictors.
