SMU Data Science Review
Violence and overdose events in Las Vegas occur at rates above the national average, with fewer than half of violent injuries reported to law enforcement [2,7]. The Cardiff Model offers a proven framework for standardized data collection and sharing between hospitals and public safety partners, yet many implementations still rely on manual entry. We propose an ambient triage pipeline integrated with Oracle-Cerner electronic health record systems to listen to nurse–patient dialogue, convert speech to text, extract Cardiff fields, and write standards-based FHIR Bundles for analytics. Using SMART on FHIR standards and Cerner Millennium APIs, the study evaluates whether ambient capture …
Influence Diagnostics For Generalized Estimating Equations Applied To Correlated Categorical Data, Louis Vazquez
Influence Diagnostics For Generalized Estimating Equations Applied To Correlated Categorical Data, Louis Vazquez
Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations
Influence diagnostics in regression analysis allow analysts to identify observations that have a strong influence on model fitted probabilities and parameter estimates. The most common influence diagnostics, such as Cook’s Distance for linear regression, are based on a deletion approach where the results of a model with and without observations of interest are compared. Here, deletion-based influence diagnostics are proposed for generalized estimating equations (GEE) for correlated, or clustered, nominal multinomial responses. The proposed influence diagnostics focus on GEEs with the baseline-category logit link function and a local odds ratio parameterization of the association structure. Formulas for both observation- and …

Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) enable ownership and transfer of digital assets using blockchain technology. As a relatively new financial asset class, NFTs lack robust oversight and regulations. These conditions create an environment that is susceptible to fraudulent activity and market manipulation schemes. This study examines the buyer-seller network transactional data from some of the most popular NFT marketplaces (e.g., AtomicHub, OpenSea) to identify and predict fraudulent activity. To accomplish this goal multiple features such as price, volume, and network metrics were extracted from NFT transactional data. These were fed into a Multiple-Scale Convolutional Neural Network that predicts suspected fraudulent activity based …

Classification Of Breast Cancer Histopathological Images Using Semi-Supervised Gans, Balaji Avvaru, Nibhrat Lohia, Sowmya Mani, Vijayasrikanth Kaniti
SMU Data Science Review
Breast cancer is diagnosed more frequently than skin cancer in women in the United States. Most breast cancer cases are diagnosed in women, while children and men are less likely to develop the disease. Various tissues in the breast grow uncontrollably, resulting in breast cancer. Different treatments analyze microscopic histopathology images for diagnosis that help accurately detect cancer cells. Deep learning is one of the evolving techniques to classify images where accuracy depends on the volume and quality of labeled images. This study used various pre-trained models to train the histopathological images and analyze these models to create a new …

Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis Of Movie Reviews, Samuel Onalaja, Eric Romero, Bosang Yun
SMU Data Science Review
This study investigates a comparison of classification models used to determine aspect based separated text sentiment and predict binary sentiments of movie reviews with genre and aspect specific driving factors. To gain a broader classification analysis, five machine and deep learning algorithms were compared: Logistic Regression (LR), Naive Bayes (NB), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Recurrent Neural Network Long-Short-Term Memory (RNN LSTM). The various movie aspects that are utilized to separate the sentences are determined through aggregating aspect words from lexicon-base, supervised and unsupervised learning. The driving factors are randomly assigned to various movie aspects and their impact tied to …

Identification And Characterization Of Forest Fire Risk Zones Leveraging Machine Learning Methods, Joshua Balson, Matt Chinchilla, Cam Lu, Jeff Washburn, Nibhrat Lohia
SMU Data Science Review
Across the United States, record numbers of wildfires are observed costing billions of dollars in property damage, polluting the environment, and putting lives at risk. The ability of emergency management professionals, city planners, and private entities such as insurance companies to determine if an area is at higher risk of a fire breaking out has never been greater. This paper proposes a novel methodology for identifying and characterizing zones with increased risks of forest fires. Methods involving machine learning techniques use the widely available and recorded data, thus making it possible to implement the tool quickly.
Informal Professional Development On Twitter: Exploring The Online Communities Of Mathematics Educators, Jaymie Ruddock
Informal Professional Development On Twitter: Exploring The Online Communities Of Mathematics Educators, Jaymie Ruddock
SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research
Professional development in its most traditional form is a classroom setting with a lecturer and an overwhelming amount of information. It is no surprise, then, that informal professional development away from institutions and on the teacher's own terms is a growing phenomenon due to an increased presence of educators on social media. These communities of educators use hashtags to broadcast to each other, with general hashtags such as #edchat having the broadest audience. However, many math educators usethe hashtags #ITeachMath and #MTBoS, communities I was interested in learning more about. I built a python script that used Tweepy to connect …
Mapping Relationships And Positions Of Objects In Images Using Mask And Bounding Box Data, Jaime M. Villanueva Jr, Anantharam Subramanian, Vishal Ahir, Andrew Pollock
Mapping Relationships And Positions Of Objects In Images Using Mask And Bounding Box Data, Jaime M. Villanueva Jr, Anantharam Subramanian, Vishal Ahir, Andrew Pollock
SMU Data Science Review
In this paper we present novel methods for automatically annotating images with relationship and position tags that are derived using mask and bounding box data. A Mask Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (Mask R-CNN) is used as the foundation for the ob- ject detection process. The relationships are found by manipulating the bounding box and mask segmentation outputs of a Mask R-CNN. The absolute positions, the positions of the objects relative to the image, and the relative positions, the positions of objects relative to the other objects, are then associated with the images as annotations that are out- put in order …

Inference Of Heterogeneity In Meta-Analysis Of Rare Binary Events And Rss-Structured Cluster Randomized Studies, Chiyu Zhang
Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation contains two topics: (1) A Comparative Study of Statistical Methods for Quantifying and Testing Between-study Heterogeneity in Meta-analysis with Focus on Rare Binary Events; (2) Estimation of Variances in Cluster Randomized Designs Using Ranked Set Sampling.
Meta-analysis, the statistical procedure for combining results from multiple studies, has been widely used in medical research to evaluate intervention efficacy and safety. In many practical situations, the variation of treatment effects among the collected studies, often measured by the heterogeneity parameter, may exist and can greatly affect the inference about effect sizes. Comparative studies have been done for only one or …
Achieving Optimal Horizontal Drill Operations, Daniel J. Serna, James Vasquez, Donald Markley
Achieving Optimal Horizontal Drill Operations, Daniel J. Serna, James Vasquez, Donald Markley
SMU Data Science Review
In this paper, we present a novel method of predicting the onset of a slide event in horizontal drilling operations. Horizontal drilling operations attempt to create a well through a subsurface as quickly as possible by rotating a drill through the subsurface. A slide event occurs when the drill begins to inefficiently rotate through the subsurface, resulting in a significantly reduced rate of penetration. Slide events can be prevented, or significantly reduced in their impact, when their onset is accurately predicted. We present a method of accurately predicting the onset of slide events with a time-series based predictive model that …

In this paper, we present an analysis of survey data with the goal of determining if the KadAfrica training program, a social organization in Uganda, has a significant effect on the lives of the girls who participate in the program. This is done through an observational study of girl’s responses to several pre-program and post-program questions. These questions include topics such as the girl’s access to hygiene materials and their personal views on family finances. In addition to providing an analysis of historical data, we established a data platform in which future data can be stored and analyzed in an …

Machine Learning Vs Conventional Analysis Techniques For The Earth’S Magnetic Field Study, Sheri Loftin, Sarah J. Fite, Laura V. Bishop, Stavros Kotsiaros
SMU Data Science Review
Abstract. Current techniques for calculating and generating models used for analyzing the Earth’s magnetic field are laborious and time-consuming. We assert that machine learning can have a significant impact on building magnetic field models more quickly and on various levels of complexity, specifically as it pertains to data cleansing and sorting. Our approach to this problem uses a reverse iterative multi-phase process for data cleansing, in which, initially, the CHAOS-6 model data is examined to determine if machine learning can be used to differentiate between useful data components for spherical harmonics, versus data noise. During this phase, six different machine …

An Evaluation Of Training Size Impact On Validation Accuracy For Optimized Convolutional Neural Networks, Jostein Barry-Straume, Adam Tschannen, Daniel W. Engels, Edward Fine
SMU Data Science Review
In this paper, we present an evaluation of training size impact on validation accuracy for an optimized Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). CNNs are currently the state-of-the-art architecture for object classification tasks. We used Amazon’s machine learning ecosystem to train and test 648 models to find the optimal hyperparameters with which to apply a CNN towards the Fashion-MNIST (Mixed National Institute of Standards and Technology) dataset. We were able to realize a validation accuracy of 90% by using only 40% of the original data. We found that hidden layers appear to have had zero impact on validation accuracy, whereas the neural …

Comparisons Of Performance Between Quantum And Classical Machine Learning, Christopher Havenstein, Damarcus Thomas, Swami Chandrasekaran
SMU Data Science Review
In this paper, we present a performance comparison of machine learning algorithms executed on traditional and quantum computers. Quantum computing has potential of achieving incredible results for certain types of problems, and we explore if it can be applied to machine learning. First, we identified quantum machine learning algorithms with reproducible code and had classical machine learning counterparts. Then, we found relevant data sets with which we tested the comparable quantum and classical machine learning algorithm's performance. We evaluated performance with algorithm execution time and accuracy. We found that quantum variational support vector machines in some cases had higher accuracy …
Modeling Stochastically Intransitive Relationships In Paired Comparison Data, Ryan Patrick Alexander Mcshane
Modeling Stochastically Intransitive Relationships In Paired Comparison Data, Ryan Patrick Alexander Mcshane
Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations
If the Warriors beat the Rockets and the Rockets beat the Spurs, does that mean that the Warriors are better than the Spurs? Sophisticated fans would argue that the Warriors are better by the transitive property, but could Spurs fans make a legitimate argument that their team is better despite this chain of evidence?
We first explore the nature of intransitive (rock-scissors-paper) relationships with a graph theoretic approach to the method of paired comparisons framework popularized by Kendall and Smith (1940). Then, we focus on the setting where all pairs of items, teams, players, or objects have been compared to …

Minimizing The Perceived Financial Burden Due To Cancer, Hassan Azhar, Zoheb Allam, Gino Varghese, Daniel W. Engels, Sajiny John
SMU Data Science Review
In this paper, we present a regression model that predicts perceived financial burden that a cancer patient experiences in the treatment and management of the disease. Cancer patients do not fully understand the burden associated with the cost of cancer, and their lack of understanding can increase the difficulties associated with living with the disease, in particular coping with the cost. The relationship between demographic characteristics and financial burden were examined in order to better understand the characteristics of a cancer patient and their burden, while all subsets regression was used to determine the best predictors of financial burden. Age, …

Data Center Application Security: Lateral Movement Detection Of Malware Using Behavioral Models, Harinder Pal Singh Bhasin, Elizabeth Ramsdell, Albert Alva, Rajiv Sreedhar, Medha Bhadkamkar
SMU Data Science Review
Data center security traditionally is implemented at the external network access points, i.e., the perimeter of the data center network, and focuses on preventing malicious software from entering the data center. However, these defenses do not cover all possible entry points for malicious software, and they are not 100% effective at preventing infiltration through the connection points. Therefore, security is required within the data center to detect malicious software activity including its lateral movement within the data center. In this paper, we present a machine learning-based network traffic analysis approach to detect the lateral movement of malicious software within the …
Predicting Game Day Outcomes In National Football League Games, Josh Klein, Anna Frowein, Chris Irwin
Predicting Game Day Outcomes In National Football League Games, Josh Klein, Anna Frowein, Chris Irwin
SMU Data Science Review
In this paper, we present a model for predicting the game day outcomes of National Football League games. 3 of the most popular sources for game day predictions are analyzed for comparison. Player data and outcomes from previous games are used, but we also incorporate several weather factors into our models. Over 1,700 games were incorporated and 3 separate models are created using simple regression, principal component analysis, and a recursive model. We also discuss the ethicality of using data science techniques by individuals with the knowledge in order to gain an advantage over a population lacking this specialized training.
Understanding Natural Keyboard Typing Using Convolutional Neural Networks On Mobile Sensor Data, Travis Siems
Understanding Natural Keyboard Typing Using Convolutional Neural Networks On Mobile Sensor Data, Travis Siems
Computer Science and Engineering Theses and Dissertations
Mobile phones and other devices with embedded sensors are becoming increasingly ubiquitous. Audio and motion sensor data may be able to detect information that we did not think possible. Some researchers have created models that can predict computer keyboard typing from a nearby mobile device; however, certain limitations to their experiment setup and methods compelled us to be skeptical of the models’ realistic prediction capability. We investigate the possibility of understanding natural keyboard typing from mobile phones by performing a well-designed data collection experiment that encourages natural typing and interactions. This data collection helps capture realistic vulnerabilities of the security …
