Inverse Limits And Atomic Projections, Włodzimierz J. Charatonik, Faruq A. Mena, Robert Paul Roe
Inverse Limits And Atomic Projections, Włodzimierz J. Charatonik, Faruq A. Mena, Robert Paul Roe
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We consider generalized inverse limits of continua with bonding functions Fn that have the projection of Graph (Fn) onto the second (first) factor atomic and images (pre-image) of points are zero-dimensional. For such bonding functions we show that under some easily verified conditions that if the first (all) factor space(s) has a certain property then the inverse limit space must have this property. The properties considered include hereditary decomposability, hereditary indecomposability, hereditary unicoherence, arc-likeness, and tree-likeness. We illustrate the theorems by several examples.
Snackjack: A Toy Model Of Blackjack, Stewart N. Ethier, Jiyeon Lee
Snackjack: A Toy Model Of Blackjack, Stewart N. Ethier, Jiyeon Lee
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
Snackjack is a highly simplified version of blackjack that was proposed by Ethier (2010) and given its name by Epstein (2013). The eight-card deck comprises two aces, two deuces, and four treys, with aces having value either 1 or 4, and deuces and treys having values 2 and 3, respectively. The target total is 7 (vs. 21 in blackjack), and ace-trey is a natural. The dealer stands on 6 and 7, including soft totals, and otherwise hits. The player can stand, hit, double, or split, but split pairs receive only one card per paircard (like split aces in blackjack), and …
Robust Inference On Effects Attributable To Mediators: A Controlled-Direct-Effect-Based Approach For Causal Effect Decomposition With Multiple Mediators, An-Shun Tai, Yi-Juan Du, Sheng-Hsuan Lin
Robust Inference On Effects Attributable To Mediators: A Controlled-Direct-Effect-Based Approach For Causal Effect Decomposition With Multiple Mediators, An-Shun Tai, Yi-Juan Du, Sheng-Hsuan Lin
Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Effect decomposition is a critical technique for mechanism investigation in settings with multiple causally ordered mediators. Causal mediation analysis is a standard method for effect decomposition, but the assumptions required for the identification process are extremely strong. By extending the framework of controlled direct effects, this study proposes the effect attributable to mediators (EAM) as a novel measure for effect decomposition. For policy making, EAM represents how much an effect can be eliminated by setting mediators to certain values. From the perspective of mechanism investigation, EAM contains information about how much a particular mediator or set of mediators is involved …

Sullivan, Travis Sanchez, Ben Lopman, Mansour Fahimi, Charles Sailey, Martin Frankel, Richard Rothenberg, Colleen F. Kelley, Heather Bradley
Publications and Research
Purpose: The U.S. response to the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic has been hampered by early and ongoing delays in testing for infection; without data on where infections were occurring and the magnitude of the epidemic, early public health responses were not data-driven. Understanding the prevalence of SARSCoV- 2 infections and immune response is critical to developing and implementing effective public health responses. Most serological surveys have been limited to localities that opted to conduct them and/or were based on convenience samples. Moreover, results of antibody testing might be subject to high false positive rates in the setting of low prevalence of immune …

Interplay Of Trna-Derived Fragments And T Cell Activation In Breast Cancer Patient Survival, Nayang Shan, Ningshan Li, Qile Dai, Lin Hou, Xiting Yan, Amei Amei, Lingeng Lu, Zuoheng Wang
Mathematical Sciences Faculty Research
Effector CD8+ T cell activation and its cytotoxic function are positively correlated with improved survival in breast cancer. tRNA-derived fragments (tRFs) have recently been found to be involved in gene regulation in cancer progression. However, it is unclear how interactions between expression of tRFs and T cell activation affect breast cancer patient survival. We used Kaplan–Meier survival and multivariate Cox regression models to evaluate the effect of interactions between expression of tRFs and T cell activation on survival in 1081 breast cancer patients. Spearman correlation analysis and weighted gene co-expression network analysis were conducted to identify genes and pathways that …

Even though lakes make up a small percentage of the water bodies on the global land surface, lakes provide critically important ecosystem services. Unfortunately, however, several lake surface areas around the globe have been changing with many of them drastically decreasing due to climate variability and local mismanagement at the basin-scale level. Lake Surface Water Temperature (LSWT) is recognized as a critical indicator of climate change in lakes. The changes in water and the surrounding land temperatures may be an indicator of climate variability if there is consistency between changes in both temperatures. This project focuses on the application of …
Snow-Albedo Feedback In Northern Alaska: How Vegetation Influences Snowmelt, Lucas C. Reckhaus
Snow-Albedo Feedback In Northern Alaska: How Vegetation Influences Snowmelt, Lucas C. Reckhaus
Theses and Dissertations
This paper investigates how the snow-albedo feedback mechanism of the arctic is changing in response to rising climate temperatures. Specifically, the interplay of vegetation and snowmelt, and how these two variables can be correlated. This has the potential to refine climate modelling of the spring transition season. Research was conducted at the ecoregion scale in northern Alaska from 2000 to 2020. Each ecoregion is defined by distinct topographic and ecological conditions, allowing for meaningful contrast between the patterns of spring albedo transition across surface conditions and vegetation types. The five most northerly ecoregions of Alaska are chosen as they encompass …

The Influence Of Environmental Variables On The Height Growth Of Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda) In The Western Gulf, Osakpamwan Edo-Iyasere
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Understanding the effects of environmental factors on stand growth is important in optimizing forest management plans. This study investigated the effects of soil and climate factors on the height growth (site index) of loblolly pine (Pinus Taeda L.) using data collected from permanent plots established in intensively-managed plantations across East Texas and Western Louisiana. The Chapman-Richards model was selected as the base model to describe the height-age relationships and important soil and climate variables were incorporated into the models as model parameter coefficient adjustors. Our results showed that the most important factors for predicting site index were nitrogen …

In response to NIH initiatives to investigate sex as a biological variable in preclinical animal studies, researchers have increased their focus on male and female differences in neurotrauma. Inclusion of both sexes when modeling neurotrauma is leading to the identification of novel areas for therapeutic and scientific exploitation. Here, we review the organizational and activational effects of sex hormones on recovery from injury and how these changes impact the long-term health of spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. When determining how sex affects SCI it remains imperative to expand outcomes beyond locomotor recovery and consider other complications plaguing the quality of …
Cell Assembly Detection In Low Firing-Rate Spike Train Data, Phan Minh Duc Truong
Cell Assembly Detection In Low Firing-Rate Spike Train Data, Phan Minh Duc Truong
Mathematics Theses and Dissertations
Cell assemblies, defined as groups of neurons forming temporal spike coordination, are thought to be fundamental units supporting major cognitive functions. However, detecting cell assemblies is challenging since they can occur at a range of time scales and with a range of precisions, from synchronous spikes to co-variations in firing rate. In this dissertation, we use a recently published cell assembly detection (CAD) algorithm that is capable of detecting assemblies at a range of time scales and precisions. We first showed that the CAD method can be applied to sparser spike train data than what have previously been reported. This …

A New Two Parametric Weighted Generalized Entropy For Lifetime Distributions, Bilal Ahmad Bhat, Mirza Abdul Khaliq Baig
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The concept of weighted generalized entropy and its dynamic residual (version) is developed. The general expressions of these two uncertainty measures corresponding to some well-known lifetime distributions are derived. It is shown that the proposed dynamic entropy determines the survival function uniquely. Some significant properties and inequalities of this dynamic entropy are also discussed.

Energy Stable Numerical Schemes For Ternary Cahn-Hilliard System, Wenbin Chen, Cheng Wang, Shufen Wang, Xiaoming Wang, Steven M. Wise
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present and analyze a uniquely solvable and unconditionally energy stable numerical scheme for the ternary Cahn-Hilliard system, with a polynomial pattern nonlinear free energy expansion. One key difficulty is associated with presence of the three mass components, though a total mass constraint reduces this to two components. Another numerical challenge is to ensure the energy stability for the nonlinear energy functional in the mixed product form, which turns out to be non-convex, non-concave in the three-phase space. to overcome this subtle difficulty, we add a few auxiliary terms to make the combined energy functional convex in the three-phase space, …
Analyzing The Fractal Dimension Of Various Musical Pieces, Nathan Clark
Analyzing The Fractal Dimension Of Various Musical Pieces, Nathan Clark
Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
One of the most common tools for evaluating data is regression. This technique, widely used by industrial engineers, explores linear relationships between predictors and the response. Each observation of the response is a fixed linear combination of the predictors with an added error element. The method is built on the assumption that this error is normally distributed across all observations and has a mean of zero. In some cases, it has been found that the inherent variation is not the result of a random variable, but is instead the result of self-symmetric properties of the observations. For data with these …
Machine Learning Approaches For Improving Prediction Performance Of Structure-Activity Relationship Models, Gabriel Idakwo
Machine Learning Approaches For Improving Prediction Performance Of Structure-Activity Relationship Models, Gabriel Idakwo
Dissertations
In silico bioactivity prediction studies are designed to complement in vivo and in vitro efforts to assess the activity and properties of small molecules. In silico methods such as Quantitative Structure-Activity/Property Relationship (QSAR) are used to correlate the structure of a molecule to its biological property in drug design and toxicological studies. In this body of work, I started with two in-depth reviews into the application of machine learning based approaches and feature reduction methods to QSAR, and then investigated solutions to three common challenges faced in machine learning based QSAR studies.
First, to improve the prediction accuracy of learning …

The Impact Of Improved Access To After-Hours Primary Care On Emergency Department And Primary Care Utilization: A Systematic Review., Michael Hong, Amardeep Thind, Gregory S Zaric, Sisira Sarma
Epidemiology and Biostatistics Publications
Access to after-hours primary care is problematic in many developed countries, leading patients to instead visit the emergency department for non-urgent conditions. However, emergency department utilization for conditions treatable in primary care settings may contribute to emergency department overcrowding and increased health system costs. This systematic review examines the impact of various initiatives by developed countries to improve access to after-hours primary care on emergency department and primary care utilization. We performed a systematic review on the impact of improved access to after-hours primary and searched CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, and Scopus. We identified 20 studies that examined the impact of …

Heart Failure In Humans Reduces Contractile Force In Myocardium From Both Ventricles, Cheavar A. Blair, Elizabeth A Brundage, Katherine L. Thompson, Arnold J. Stromberg, Maya Guglin, Brandon J Biesiadecki, Kenneth S. Campbell
Statistics Faculty Publications
This study measured how heart failure affects the contractile properties of the human myocardium from the left and right ventricles. The data showed that maximum force and maximum power were reduced by approximately 30% in multicellular preparations from both ventricles, possibly because of ventricular remodeling (e.g., cellular disarray and/or excess fibrosis). Heart failure increased the calcium (Ca2+) sensitivity of contraction in both ventricles, but the effect was bigger in right ventricular samples. The changes in Ca2+ sensitivity were associated with ventricle-specific changes in the phosphorylation of troponin I, which indicated that adrenergic stimulation might induce different effects …
A Novel Correction For The Adjusted Box-Pierce Test — New Risk Factors For Emergency Department Return Visits Within 72 Hours For Children With Respiratory Conditions — General Pediatric Model For Understanding And Predicting Prolonged Length Of Stay, Sidy Danioko
Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
This thesis represents the results of three research projects that underline the breadth and depth of my interests.
Firstly, I devoted some efforts to the well-known Box-Pierce goodness-of-fit tests for time series models which has been an important research topic over the last few decades. All previously proposed tests are focused on changes of the test statistics. Instead, I adopted a different approach that takes the best performing test and modifying the rejection region. Thus, I developed a semiparametric correction of the Adjusted Box-Pierce test that attains the best I error rates for all sample sizes and lags and outperforms …

Linear Methods For Regression With Small Sample Sizes Relative To The Number Of Variables., Rajesh Sikder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In data sets where there are a small number of observations but a large number of variables observed for each observation, ordinary least squares estimation cannot be used for regression models. There are many alternative including stepwise regression, penalized methods such as ridge regression and the LASSO, and methods based on derived inputs such as principal components regression and partial least squares regression. In this thesis, these five methods are described. K-fold cross validation is also discussed as a way for determining regularization parameters for each method. The performance of these methods in estimation and prediction is also examined through …
Marginal Methods And Software For Clustered Data With Cluster- And Group-Size Informativeness., Mary Elizabeth Gregg
Marginal Methods And Software For Clustered Data With Cluster- And Group-Size Informativeness., Mary Elizabeth Gregg
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Clustered data result when observations have some natural organizational association. In such data, cluster size is defined as the number of observations belonging to a cluster. A phenomenon termed informative cluster size (ICS) occurs when observation outcomes vary in a systematic way related to the cluster size. An additional form of informativeness, termed informative within-cluster group size (IWCGS), arises when the distribution of group-defining categorical covariates within clusters similarly carries information related to outcomes. Standard methods for the marginal analysis of clustered data can produce biased estimates and inference when data have informativeness. A reweighting methodology has been developed that …

Adult mammalian wounds, with rare exception, heal with fibrotic scars that severely disrupt tissue architecture and function. Regenerative medicine seeks methods to avoid scar formation and restore the original tissue structures. We show in three adult mouse models that pharmacologic activation of the nociceptor TRPA1 on cutaneous sensory neurons reduces scar formation and can also promote tissue regeneration. Local activation of TRPA1 induces tissue regeneration on distant untreated areas of injury, demonstrating a systemic effect. Activated TRPA1 stimulates local production of interleukin-23 (IL-23) by dermal dendritic cells, leading to activation of circulating dermal IL-17–producing γδ T cells. Genetic ablation of …

One of the approaches for structural health monitoring (SHM) consists of two major components, i.e. a network of sensors to collect the response data and an extraction method to obtain information on the structural health condition. Data mining (DM) is a novel data extraction technology which can employ for development of inverse analysis. Implementation of DM techniques in different areas of civil engineering has recently given very good results. However, application of DM in SHM is not used as much as expected, thus, many challenges are still ahead. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the applicability of DM in SHM. …
Statistical Methods For Resolving Intratumor Heterogeneity With Single-Cell Dna Sequencing, Alexander Davis
Statistical Methods For Resolving Intratumor Heterogeneity With Single-Cell Dna Sequencing, Alexander Davis
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Tumor cells have heterogeneous genotypes, which drives progression and treatment resistance. Such genetic intratumor heterogeneity plays a role in the process of clonal evolution that underlies tumor progression and treatment resistance. Single-cell DNA sequencing is a promising experimental method for studying intratumor heterogeneity, but brings unique statistical challenges in interpreting the resulting data. Researchers lack methods to determine whether sufficiently many cells have been sampled from a tumor. In addition, there are no proven computational methods for determining the ploidy of a cell, a necessary step in the determination of copy number. In this work, software for calculating probabilities from …

D-Vine Pair-Copula Models For Longitudinal Binary Data, Huihui Lin
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
Dependent longitudinal binary data are prevalent in a wide range of scientific disciplines, including healthcare and medicine. A popular method for analyzing such data is the multivariate probit (MP) model. The motivation for this dissertation stems from the fact that the MP model fails even the binary correlations are within the feasible range. The reason being the underlying correlation matrix of the latent variables in the MP model may not be positive definite. In this dissertation, we study alternatives that are based on D-vine pair-copula models. We consider both the serial dependence modeled by the first order autoregressive (AR(1)) and …
