The Role Of Cd147 In Breast Cancer Progression, George Daniel Grass Jan 2012

The Role Of Cd147 In Breast Cancer Progression, George Daniel Grass

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

In the U.S., approximately 40,000 women will die from breast cancer this year, while an additional 230,500 women will be newly diagnosed with invasive breast disease. Despite tremendous advancement leading to earlier detection and novel therapeutic approaches, recurrent metastatic breast cancer remains a major cause of mortality. Invasive breast cancer cells employ specialized actin-rich protrusions called invadopodia, which are enriched in proteases, to degrade the extracellular matrix and these structures correlate with metastasis in vivo. The multifunctional immunoglobulin superfamily protein emmprin (CD147) is highly enriched on the surface of malignant breast cancer cells and is associated with matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) …

Arma-Garch Model Applied To Exchange-Traded Funds, Rebecca Davis Jan 2012

Arma-Garch Model Applied To Exchange-Traded Funds, Rebecca Davis

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In this paper, time-varying volatility of some of the leading exchange-traded funds are studied. The ARMA mean equation with GARCH errors is used to model the series correlations and the conditional heteroscadesticity in the asset

returns. The conditional distributions of the standardized residuals are assumed to be skew-generalized error distribution. The high kurtosis and fat tail of the returns, were captured in all the data by fitting an ARMA-GARCH model with the conditional distribution of, skew-generalized error distribution.

Furthermore, the sample cross-correlations of these significant exchange-traded funds and the corresponding financial indices they mimic were computed. The empirical conclusion was …

Alternatives To Mixture Model Analysis Of Correlated Binomial Data, N. Rao Chaganty, Roy Sabo, Yihao Deng Jan 2012

Alternatives To Mixture Model Analysis Of Correlated Binomial Data, N. Rao Chaganty, Roy Sabo, Yihao Deng

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

While univariate instances of binomial data are readily handled with generalized linear models, cases of multivariate or repeated measure binomial data are complicated by the possibility of correlated responses. Likelihood-based estimation can be applied by using mixture distribution models, though this approach can present computational challenges. The logistic transformation can be used to bypass these concerns and allow for alternative estimating procedures. One popular alternative is the generalized estimating equation (GEE) method, though systematic errors can lead to infeasible correlation estimates or nonconvergence problems. Our approach is the coupling of quasileast squares (QLSs) method with a rarely used matrix factorization, …

Analysis Of Binary Data Via Spatial-Temporal Autologistic Regression Models, Zilong Wang Jan 2012

Analysis Of Binary Data Via Spatial-Temporal Autologistic Regression Models, Zilong Wang

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

Spatial-temporal autologistic models are useful models for binary data that are measured repeatedly over time on a spatial lattice. They can account for effects of potential covariates and spatial-temporal statistical dependence among the data. However, the traditional parametrization of spatial-temporal autologistic model presents difficulties in interpreting model parameters across varying levels of statistical dependence, where its non-negative autocovariates could bias the realizations toward 1. In order to achieve interpretable parameters, a centered spatial-temporal autologistic regression model has been developed. Two efficient statistical inference approaches, expectation-maximization pseudo-likelihood approach (EMPL) and Monte Carlo expectation-maximization likelihood approach (MCEML), have been proposed. Also, Bayesian …

Evaluating Retention In Medical Care And Its Impact On The Health Outcomes Of Individuals Living With Human Inmmunodeficiency Virus, Timothy N. Crawford Jan 2012

Evaluating Retention In Medical Care And Its Impact On The Health Outcomes Of Individuals Living With Human Inmmunodeficiency Virus, Timothy N. Crawford

Theses and Dissertations--Epidemiology and Biostatistics

In the last few years, engagement in medical care among individuals living with HIV has become a major priority among HIV medical providers and public health researchers. Engagement in medical care is an important concept as it involves the process of linking newly diagnosed individuals into medical care and retaining those individuals in care throughout the course of their infection. Although there have been major advances in the management of HIV, like the advent of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy, morbidity and mortality due to HIV cannot be fully reduced if the individual does not optimally retain in care. Retention in …

Bounded Solutions Of Almost Linear Volterra Equations, Muhammad Islam, Youssef Raffoul

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Fixed point theorem of Krasnosel’skii is used as the primary mathematical tool to study the boundedness of solutions of certain Volterra type equations. These equations are studied under a set of assumptions on the functions involved in the equations. The equations will be called almost linear when these assumptions hold.

Using Generalized Estimating Equations To Analyze Repeated Measures Binary Data From The Young Adolescent Crowd Study, Lauren Ashley Beacham Jan 2012

Using Generalized Estimating Equations To Analyze Repeated Measures Binary Data From The Young Adolescent Crowd Study, Lauren Ashley Beacham

LSU Master's Theses

The young adolescent crowd study (YACS) was conducted in order to look at the influence of various factors on use of controlled substances by middle school students. The contributing factors investigated were demographics (gender and race), self-esteem in different modalities such as school or athletic performance, and the peer group students belong to. Each student has a binary response for whether they have used alcohol, marijuana or cigarettes which was recorded in both seventh and eighth grade. Since the data has a binary repeated measures response, generalized estimating equations (GEE) in a logistic regression setting is a good way to …

Let X be a topological graph, with arcs joined only at end points. If Y is any locally connected metrizable compactum that is co-elementarily equivalent to X, then Y is homeomorphic to X. In particular, X and Y are homeomorphic if some lattice base for one is elementarily equivalent to some lattice base for the other.

General Recognition Theory Extended To Include Response Times: Predictions For A Class Of Parallel Systems, James T. Townsend, Joseph W. Houpt, Noah H. Silbert Jan 2012

General Recognition Theory Extended To Include Response Times: Predictions For A Class Of Parallel Systems, James T. Townsend, Joseph W. Houpt, Noah H. Silbert

Psychology Faculty Publications

General Recognition Theory (GRT; Ashby & Townsend, 1986) is a multidimensional theory of classification. Originally developed to study various types of perceptual independence, it has also been widely employed in diverse cognitive venues, such as categorization. The initial theory and applications have been static, that is, lacking a time variable and focusing on patterns of responses, such as confusion matrices. Ashby proposed a parallel, dynamic stochastic version of GRT with application to perceptual independence based on discrete linear systems theory with imposed noise (Ashby, 1989). The current study again focuses on cognitive/perceptual independence within an identification classification paradigm. We extend …

Abel Dynamic Equations Of The First And Second Kind, Sabrina Heike Streipert

Masters Theses

"In this work, we study Abel dynamic equations of the first and the second kind. After a brief introduction to time scales, we introduce the Abel differential equations of the first and the second kind, as well as the canonical Abel form in the continuous case. Using the existing information, we derive novel results for time scales. We provide formulas for the Abel dynamic equations of the second kind and present a solution method. We furthermore achieve a special class of Abel equations of the first kind and discuss the canonical Abel equation. We get relations between common dynamic equations …

Parsing The Relationship Between Baserunning And Batting Abilities Within Lineups, Ben S. Baumer, James Piette, Brad Null Jan 2012

Parsing The Relationship Between Baserunning And Batting Abilities Within Lineups, Ben S. Baumer, James Piette, Brad Null

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

A baseball team's offensive prowess is a function of two types of abilities: batting and baserunning. While each has been studied extensively in isolation, the effects of their interaction is not well understood. We model offensive output as a scalar function f of an individual player's batting and baserunning profile z. Each of these profiles is in turn estimated from Retrosheet data using heirarchical Bayesian models. We then use the SimulOutCome simulation engine as a method to generate values of f(z) over a fine grid of points. Finally, for each of several methods of taking the extra base, we graphically …

Probability Of Identification: A Statistical Model For The Validation Of Qualitative Botanical Identification Methods, Robert A. Labudde, James M. Harnly

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

A qualitative botanical identification method (BIM) is an analytical procedure that returns a binary result (1 = Identified, 0 = Not Identified). A BIM may be used by a buyer, manufacturer, or regulator to determine whether a botanical material being tested is the same as the target (desired) material, or whether it contains excessive nontarget (undesirable) material. The report describes the development and validation of studies for a BIM based on the proportion of replicates identified, or probability of identification (POI), as the basic observed statistic. The statistical procedures proposed for data analysis follow closely those of the probability of …

Background

We previously reported that the cytochrome P450 product 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid has prosurvival effects in pulmonary artery endothelial cells and ex vivo pulmonary arteries. We tested the potential of a 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid analog N-[20-hydroxyeicosa-5(Z),14(Z)-dienoyl]glycine (20-5,14-HEDGE) to protect against lung ischemic reperfusion injury in rats. Furthermore, we examined activation of innate immune system components, high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), in this model as well as the effect of 20-5,14-HEDGE on this signaling pathway.

Methods

Sprague-Dawley rats treated with 20-5,14-HEDGE or vehicle were subjected to surgically induced, unilateral lung ischemia for 60 minutes followed by reperfusion …

A Direct D-Bar Reconstruction Algorithm For Recovering A Complex Conductivity In 2d, Sarah J. Hamilton, C. N. L. Herrera, J. L. Mueller, A. Von Herrmann

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

A direct reconstruction algorithm for complex conductivities in W2, ∞(Ω), where Ω is a bounded, simply connected Lipschitz domain in R2 , is presented. The framework is based on the uniqueness proof by Francini (2000 Inverse Problems 6 107–19), but equations relating the Dirichlet-to-Neumann to the scattering transform and the exponentially growing solutions are not present in that work, and are derived here. The algorithm constitutes the first D-bar method for the reconstruction of conductivities and permittivities in two dimensions. Reconstructions of numerically simulated chest phantoms with discontinuities at the organ boundaries are included.

Secondary Structure Prediction Of Long Rna Sequences Based On Inversion Excursions And A Modularized Mapreduce Framework, Daniel Tesfai Yehdego Jan 2012

Secondary Structure Prediction Of Long Rna Sequences Based On Inversion Excursions And A Modularized Mapreduce Framework, Daniel Tesfai Yehdego

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Ribonucleic acid (RNA) molecules and their secondary structures play important roles in many biological processes including gene expression and regulation. The genomes of many viruses are also RNA molecules. Since secondary structures are crucial for RNA functionality, computational predictions of the RNA secondary structures have been widely studied. However, the tremendous demands on computer memory and computing time for complex secondary structures limit the capability of existing thermodynamically based algorithms for structure predictions to handling only short RNA sequences with a few hundred bases. One approach to overcome this limitation is by first cutting long RNA sequences into shorter, non-overlapping …

The Dependent Samples T And Wilcoxon Sign Rank Maximum Test, Saverpierre Maggio Jan 2012

The Dependent Samples T And Wilcoxon Sign Rank Maximum Test, Saverpierre Maggio

Wayne State University Dissertations

A maximum test using the parametric dependent samples t-test and the non-parametric Wilcoxon sign rank test was created using a FORTRAN program and various subroutines of the International Mathematical and Statistical Libraries (IMSL, 1980). Two tailed critical values were derived from a mixed normal distribution. Critical values obtained were at the 0.05, 0.025, 0.01 and 0.005 alpha levels via sample sizes (n) 8 through 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120. Critical values were compared to values obtained through the application of the Bonferroni correction method. It was concluded that the Bonferroni is an unnecessary method. Findings of the study are …

Linear Rank Tests Of Uniformity: Understanding Inconsistent Outcomes And The Construction Of New Tests, Anna E. Bargagliotti Jan 2012

Linear Rank Tests Of Uniformity: Understanding Inconsistent Outcomes And The Construction Of New Tests, Anna E. Bargagliotti

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

Several nonparametric tests exist to test for differences among alternatives when using ranked data. Testing for differences among alternatives amounts to testing for uniformity over the set of possible permutations of the alternatives. Well-known tests of uniformity, such as the Friedman test or the Anderson test, are based on the impact of the usual limiting theorems (e.g. central limit theorem) and the results of different summary statistics (e.g. mean ranks, marginals, and pairwise ranks). Inconsistencies can occur among statistical tests' outcomes - different statistical tests can yield different outcomes when applied to the same ranked data. In this paper, we …
